WHOOO FREAKING HOOOO.

Warren Jeffs has (justly) been convicted of two counts of rape and is going to jail for a looong time. *pumps fist*

Under the cut are "doctrines" the Mormon Church STILL HAS in their "standard works," which the FLDS (Polygamists) run their "religion" by. This is what created the world that Warren Jeffs ruled.

JD = Journal of Discourses, linked above.
D&C = Doctrine & Covenants, the direct teaching of Joseph Smith

C&P'd from the actual documents. All misspells are because these guy were farmers and assholes, not educated men.

JD 11:146 Heber C Kimbell October 6, 1865 SLC

Whatever the Prophet and President of the Church tells us to do, for he is directed by the unerring Spirit of the Almighty to counsel this people.
We are connected with him in the Lord.

D&C 132
41.And as ye have asked a concerning adultery, verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man receiveth a wife in the new and everlasting covenant, and if she be with another man, and I have not appointed unto her by the holy anointing, she hath committed adultery and shall be destroyed.

JD 4:219 Brigham Young February 8, 1857 SLC
...This is loving our neighbour as ourselves; if he needs help, help him; and if he wants salvation and it is necessary to spill his blood on the earth in order that he (she) maybe saved, spill it. Any of you who understand the principles of eternity, if you have sinned a sin requiring the shedding of blood, except the sin unto death, would not be satisfied nor rest until your blood should be spilled, that you might gain that salvation you desire. That is the way to love mankind.

JD 4:49 Jedediah M. Grant September 21, 1856 SLC
I say, that there are men and women that I would advise to go to the President immediately, and ask him to appoint a committee to attend to their case; and then let a place be selected, and let that committee shed their blood.
We have those amongst us that are full of all manner of abominations, those who need to have their blood shed, for water will not to, their sins are too deep a dye.

You may think that I am teaching you Bible doctrine, but what says the apostle Paul? I would ask how many covenant breakers there are in this city and in this kingdom. I believe that there are a great many; and if they are covenant breakers we need a place designated, where we can shed their blood.

Warren Jeffs had his own "book" that says women should submit to their husband in all things. So. Rape = submission for the Lord's pleasure. ?!?!?!

Elissa Walls (the girl forced to marry her 1rst cousin at 14) purposely committed adultery so she would be "blood atoned" because she would rather have been dead than married to her rapist. In America, ladies and gentlemen.

THIS SHIT IS INSANE.

And now everyone is a little more knowledgeable on the situation out there; maybe some change can happen. Like these women not remain their husbands' chattel.

Wow, glad that creep is going behind bars. *shudders* That poor girl.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? And there's lots more just like her. Hopefully this will give them the courage to come out about it, or leave that cult.

[identity profile] beadbeauty.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. You are really on a rampage to educate the masses on this Jeffs guy. Sucks that he's out there.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he's the face of polygamy so... yeah. What happens there (and now here in Texas) is awful. No one talks about it, but I can't do that.

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I admit to being surprised that he was actually convicted. Somehow, I was afraid he'd get off..glad I was wrong.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, same here!

[identity profile] beadbeauty.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Want to hear something positive? I am registering my company name today. I"M SO WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE excited!

[identity profile] halfmoon-mollie.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Doin' the happy dance right behind you, kiddo!

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Now if we can start knocking down the other "leaders..."

Elissa Walls (the girl forced to marry her 1rst cousin at 14) purposely committed adultery

...I have to go be sick now.

I hope he gets life.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And the sad thing is how NORMAL that is for these people. Sons take their father's wives, 13 -16 year old girls are given to their septuagenarian uncles ... I'm sick of these "leaders" getting to hide behind "freedom of religion" because people won't touch that topic with a 10 foot pole.

I'm very glad he was convicted.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
ME. TOO.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say his conviction is a message from God I can celebrate. :D

I hope he enjoys prison life.

That girl, she's pretty brave, yeah? At her age, to fight back in any way open to her....that takes courage. I hope this won't scar her for life, but it probably will.

I hope other girls like her can be helped, can take courage from this and know it doesn't have to be their life.

I still can't believe this is as widespread a religion as it is. It's insane.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
VERY brave. It's such a controlling culture, in every sense of the word. She knew that she faced death threats, being tarred as a slut (which the "defense" witnesses all called her) and more.

I'm hoping this leads to more arrests and MORE LIGHT ON THIS HAPPENING IN AMERICA. <-- still boggled by that.

*blinks* They kinda missed the entire point of Christianity, huh? Scary. Anyway, thank goodness Jeffs is being put away!

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. They're all Old Testament in their blood atonement. Oh, and crazy-ville. Don't forget how crazyville they are. O_O

[identity profile] anelith.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My only regret is that he couldn't be convicted on more, and more serious, charges. But yay for this one!

What a horrible, horrible man, and what a horrible religion he has behind him.

*shudder*

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, there is documentation of him, during "church," grabbing his wife by her braid and forcing her to her knees in supplication before him, to show the other women what a "goodly wife" should be.

!!!

Let's hope they all fall like dominoes.

The last link in this entry takes you to an article that ties all this stuff-- which I stumbled onto this morning-- to the Warren Jeffs case.

But, dear lord, have you seen this "purity ball" thing before? I have spent far too much time following the series of links that got me there, and now I'm seriously creeped out.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, I've never heard of a purity ball before. It's definitely not a part of the Mormon culture - that looks like a Baptist/evangelical thing to me. Yeeeeeeeesh. Creepy.

[identity profile] lumenara.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, first I'd heard of it either. There were links to that from some of the commentary articles about the MarryOurDaughter (joke) site. Did you watch the video? Some weird creepy shit there, and it really does seem interrelated. We are *so* fucked up.

I completely agree with your icon-face.

[identity profile] copykween.livejournal.com 2007-09-26 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw this one the news and immediately thought of you. Gah...so sick! It blows my mind how those types of practices can just keep on going and going and going. Hopefully his arrest will be the first in a loooong list of others. *crosses fingers*

[identity profile] domenowtrent.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
It was in EVERY newspaper here in HUGE fucking font on the front page. I was opening the cafe and saw a big stack of newspaper sitting at the front door and I was like, "OMG" and I like totally thought of you, haha. I wanted to buy a copy of the paper for you, but then I realized I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to send it, AND you would have already heard of itbefore the paper got to you. SO. I did not buy the newspaper. I bought a slice of cheesecake instead. And I ate it. :-D

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha. BEST PLAN EVER, ZOMG.

(Do the priesthood men still use the Journal of Discourses? Would you mind checking the bookstore - next time you're there, don't make a special trip - and let me know? There's loads of wacky stuff in there.)

[identity profile] domenowtrent.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Deseret Book? There's one next to ShopKo and I was going to head there before work tonight.

[identity profile] domenowtrent.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
http://deseretbook.com/store/product?sku=4954158

I think it's only available in the whole set. ...for $550

[identity profile] domenowtrent.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think now it's more of a Talk reference guide and collectible. I don't generally hear people talk about it.

[identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*rolls eyes* Oh, of course! :D I'm going to have to sneak my dad's old copy. When I was in YW, it was always referred to. I bet all the new converts couldn't handle a lot of the old stuff the church believed in, so it's slowly being removed...

(And thanks! How you doing? Surviving the year so far? *hugs*)

[identity profile] domenowtrent.livejournal.com 2007-09-30 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Surviving! Slowly but surely. Am slightly elated that no one has come a knockin' on my door to try to get me to go to church.

I heard he was convicted, and I was incredibly happy. Of course, a lot of people are crying "religious persecution," but religious freedom does not give you license to a) break the law or b) arrange for the rape of little girls.

I just got a book on the advice of a friend called Under the Banner of Heaven. I'm sure you've heard of it, if you haven't already read it. Are there any others you'd recommend?
