I've decided that it's not that I can't take decent garden pictures, it's that a) I should get them on disc in stead of hard copies and b) my scanner sucks. So I've put a few pics taken a month ago under the cut of the garden, and one of my kitten, Hope. D'aww.

I mentioned a while back that I watched two front crash and later we had tornadoes in the area? Here are two pics from that night:

The sky was SO BLUE. And then, BAM. Yellowy-green. All the birds went quiet for a bit, which isn't indicative of goodness. We just had minor wind damage from this one.

The first pic was taken from the front of my house, and this one was from the backdoor. By the time I walked through the house to the back, the system had circled the whole area. (That's like... many many miles. Yeeps.)

Rule of thumb for people not from here: if the sky is the color of a bruise, get into the most interior room of your house, preferably a small bathroom or closet. (Structurally the safest.)

And again, the actual photos in my hand are so nice! But my scanner made them all fuzzy and discolored. Bah. Garden!

Blue plants in the foreground are bluebonnets (State flower) and the purple flower is a Spanish lavender.

Here's a closeup. I like how this variety looks like bunny heads. Hee! The silver/grey plant in the back with threaded leaves is that old standby, Powis Castle artemisia. (Wormwood.) One of my most favorite plant smells, too.

And finally, KITTY!

And because I'm procrastinating (we had another major storm roll in last night and blow my climbing rose off the house again, and I need to get a copper pipe trellis installed to keep it from DYING, omg. *cries*) I have a poll under the cut. MP3 A GO GO!!

All this rain is certainly making everything look lush and beautiful, though I could pass on the skeery winds and lightning that emerge from nowhere and make the lights do that spooky on/off horror movie flickering while I'm quietly reading a murder mystery...

Oh, stoney. How you make me laugh. Only you would come up with such an awesome poll.

Most of my answers to the poll were random, and checked while Pyewacket sat on my lap and licked my face and hand. Don't know if that affected the answers but if you smell cat breath while you read them you'll know why.

The pictures of the sky look completely terrifying! I'd run and hide under the bed; well, I'd try to remember to hide in the bathroom but I'd probably pull a blanket over my head while there.

Hope is such a pretty cat, and your garden is gorgeous.

My gardens are looking fuller, which is a def. bonus, and the almost doing away with Stage 3 drought conditions is awesome, but I need to treat my yard and can't because it's all soggy!

OooooOOOooooh. I bet that's LOVELY. I have many many lavender plants, but they're all the same variety, as French and English lavenders absolutely MELT in our Texas heat. One of those "grow what won't die" environments...

Be sure to post pics of your garden when it's all established so I can drool over it! :D

CAT LICKING. Isn't that the sweetest thing? I mean, sure, their breath can be just HORRID, but still! When a predator is all "I looooooove you, slurp!" there's something so sweet about that!

Thanks for saying so about the garden. I mean, y'all have utterly stunning gardens up there, so I get incredibly envious of the New England garden scene... Can't wait to see it up close and in person in a month! (I'll email you later today or tomorrow - 'kay?)

I love lavender! I have several varieties growing on my patio, in containers. The English lavender is the size of a small bush, and the Spanish lavender is getting close to that size. I also have a small white variety, and a dwarf variety. The plants are just getting ready to start blooming...any week now.
Your garden is pretty!

Apropos of nothing you were talking about, but I had one of the strongest deja vu experiences of my life while at a production of Bell, Book and Candle. 'Pyewacket' brings that whole moment of woah!* back like nobody's business - I hadn't thought of it in ages, so I felt compelled to talk about it.

*Must be heard in Keanu Reeves' voice for the full effect :-).

I haven't seen that play! But it sounds like Pyewacket would fit right in with the theme.

When we were attempting to come up with good names for our two all-black kittens, one thing I did was just doodle around on the Net looking for anything connected with the words "black" and "cat." I came across information dealing with witch's familiars, and there you go. Pyewacket and Oberon. Most people think we named Oberon after the king of the fairies, but apparently Oberon was also a noted witch's familiar. We also call them Pye and Obie, or Sweetie-Pye and Obi-Wan. Whatever, they never come when called, as is the way with cats.

They are very loving. Lap cats. Will tap your face with one or both paws (claws sheathed) if feeling ignored.

I do hear Keanu Reeves' voice when thinking of "Woah!", now that you mention it.

"sighs" That was the year that it was a cold, wet Spring and everything bloomed like crazy. Unfortunately since then we have been hot and very dry and quite a few things are now deceased. So I've been redoing various beds in hope of bringing things back.

And btw, my cousin's daughter and her hubby are TX storm chasers, those photos would have had them salivating.

Hello there. Not to sound like an insane stalker but I was wondering if you live in Austin.

A mutual friend of ours [livejournal.com profile] southernbangel has said that she is visting you, and if you live in Austin, I would love to meet up for dinner or something. :)

I'm afraid she might not check her email before hopping a plane, so I thought I would ask you. :)

Few hours north in the DFW area, actually, although Austin is one of my most favorite cities on the PLANET. Man, there are about 10 places to eat/drink I'm thinking of off the top of my head that would have been a blast, too!

I'm working on a magic map where you can fold it to make two places touch and be that close in RL, however... ;)

And damn her for not visiting you later! I'll be in D/FW in two weeks for work!

And damn lawschool for having finals that prevent me from properly stalking both of you.

Thank you. That is, of course, the correct response.

Next time you two concoct a plan to have havoc and melee in Texas be sure to contact me FIRST, BEFORE making your plans.

1. Tornadoes are f&cking terrifying. I don't know how you live with them.

2a. You have pretty pretty flowers. And a cute kitty.
2b. Book. Butterflies. Sometimes it's relaxing to just not f&ck anything like an animal for a bit.

If you judge a book by the cover... then you judge a book by the LOVER.

1. Cowering, wireless radios, and more cowering
2a. thank you!
2b. unless the animal is a sloth, because I think they're most likely hold their lovers with tenderness. Or possibly just a look. A LOOK OF LOVE.

There's also a Jimmy Stewart/Kim Novak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051406/) movie which I've seen on AMC, but I don't know if it's rentable.

Our cat knows her name, but is selective about when she chooses to acknowledge that fact. One of her favorite ways to get attention, if I'm sitting down, is to sit on the arm of the chair then push her body into me - subtly at first, and then ever more forcefully until I get the hint. As if to say, "I'd like some attention, but I'm not going to lower myself to *asking* for it. After all, I am a cat."

Gorgeous pictures. One of my earliest memories from childhood in Missouri is my mother screaming at me to get away from the window and down to the basement. I was mesmerized by the neighbor's vegetables flying by the house. :) Another memory is sitting in the basement reading The Wizard of Oz with my mom by oil lamp during a storm. We get torados in Colorado, but not usually up where I'm at. They do make the sky beautiful.

You're poll is crazy, girl. *mwah!*

Oh, that's right! I meant to post the "answers" (and the songs) today! I'll go do that.

And I know people are terrified of tornadoes (and rightly so) but they happen so fast and are over so quickly and make everything so bizarre and wonderful. Not like hurricanes where you have three days to prepare and the storms just sit over you for days.

I was sad when my dad redid their kitchen and boarded up the potato cellar underneath where we used to crouch when I was a kid. Now, the city has developed so much that the center of Dallas is rarely affected directly by twisters. They skirt around the buildings and hit the farms, instead.

I would never want to be out in the car or something during a tornado, but if I have access to protection, I think they're awesome. And way better than hurricans, for sure.

Oh, yeah. Unfortunately, you can always tell folks that aren't from here, because they drive their cars under a bridge on the highway, thinking that's a safe spot, not knowing that's one of the WORST places to be because the winds are more powerful through bridges/tunnels. (not to mention how they cause back up traffic which can be astoundingly dangerous)

The mister is from Houston, so he grew up with all the hurricane knowledge. I just don't venture that far along the coastline, personally. :D

Your pics are awesome, dear. The one that has the dress in the foreground is ART with capital letters even. We had a real nor'easter, or however one is supposed to spell that, for some reason one is supposed to leave out letters and sound like one has a piece of hay in one's mouth even when in the Northeast born and bred. But we did not get great pictures out of it along with the thunder and lightening, only a foot of water in the basement when the float on the sump pump got jammed.
If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all, as the saying goes.
Actually, not true, the tree I asked you about a while back, my cherry tree, is blooming and looks gorgeous! I am filling my vases and shall prune it back when it is done.
New question dear master gardener, actually two. Are you walking again for Breast Cancer this month? And two, do you know anything about hibiscus plants? The sweet older lady next door rescued one from the trash at her place of work and is nursing it back to health. It looks like it was probably a gift that was tossed and she is asking me for advice. We live in Southern NJ which is pretty warm, with sandy, fairly acidic soil. Should she keep it potted or try planting it? Feel free to tell me to google it if this is something you don't know off hand.

(dress? You mean my stripey umbrella? *g*) I'm so glad we don't have basements here - I always hear about y'all needing to bail yours out! Good ness.

I am walking again for Breast Cancer (the 3 Day) but it's not until October, so you'll have PLENTY OF TIME to give me money, heeeeeeee! I'd say to put that hibiscus in a pot. They're tropical, and if the leaves are shiny, that's the annual type. If the leaves aren't shiny (looking like they're coated in oil and thick) then it's a perennial and can be put in a pot and brought in during the winter, then brought back out in the spring for a new year of blooms.

I wouldn't try to plant them in the ground up there - they're tender in the cold.
