It's only Tuesday?
Jun. 17th, 2008 11:28 amIt feels like Wednesday to me.
- After
harmonyfb pointed out this comic to me, I now want someone to write Millennium Falcon/Battlestar Galactica fic. Oooh, and threesome with Serenity. Hahahaha. OH MY GOD, I just remembered! Kita's son was almost right. (He surmised that Galactica was the 5th Cylon. We all agree it's Starbuck's Viper, right? RIGHT?) - As of last night, I now have an agent. \o/ (Acting, not writing. BUT! Could be a doorway to a writing agent, which - I think I would pass out from the awesomeness.)
-
There is potential rain in my forecast, and I'm doing every dance I can think of. My poor little garden is coughing dust.It is now pouring and there are roofers trying to get off my neighbor's house. Eeep. - Today is library day. What books are you reading and loving right now? I'm bouncing between "The World Is Flat" for making my brain smart and the "Empress" series by Anchee Min to escape and not tax my brain. You?

Date: 2008-06-17 04:42 pm (UTC)Yes, I think the viper is the 5th. I hope we're as clever as we think!
I'm reading Fuschia Dunlop's Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-sour Memoir of Eating in China. I'm only a chapter in and it's already very entertaining. Her two Chinese cookbooks are fabulous.
Congratulations on the agent!

Date: 2008-06-17 04:47 pm (UTC)I've been reading funny stuff. Yesterday I went to the library with Ron to kill some time, happened to spot "Leave it to Psmith" on the shelf. Thought, I've always meant to read some Wodehouse, took it home and read the whole thing in one day. Every time I chuckled, snorted, belly-laughed, it drove Nathan crazy -- "what's so *funny*, Mom?!" One day he'll have to find out for himself.
I've also started reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Both of these authors on the many, many recommendations of others. What took me so long? I don't know. But now I have lots of great things to catch up on. It will be fun.

Date: 2008-06-17 04:47 pm (UTC)Oooh, that sounds just like the kind of thing I like to read! I'll check that out, thank you! (And thank you!)

Date: 2008-06-17 04:49 pm (UTC)Oh, I looooooove Wodehouse! I went on a kick last summer and read everything I could get my hands on. So funny and fun.
I'm right there with you on Pratchett. I've not read those, but they come so highly recommended. I need to get doing on that. There's a lot in that series, right? I think that's EXACTLY what I'll look for today!

Date: 2008-06-17 05:01 pm (UTC)I'm reading "A Line of Beauty" by Allan Hollinghurst and within the first 50 pages I was very happy that fandom had trained me for slash or otherwise I might have died from the pr0n. Seriously, slash (and erotica) aren't my thing if they don't involve one very blonde vampire, so this is the first time I read graphic butt-sex in *gasp* literature.
Apart from the shock factor the book is very lyrical so far, but I'm only on page 70. I like what I've read so far. (Thatcherite Britain, young gay person stays w/ Upper Class family of best friend. I don't know if there'll be more plot later on...)
I just ordered "Vermeer's Hat" by T. Brook and it looks promising.
Brain candy I finished a while ago: Mooncalled by Patricia Briggs. You know it's bad for you, but it's also yummy and fun!

Date: 2008-06-17 05:20 pm (UTC)Hooray for an agent! You're, like, professional and stuffs! :-D
Also, re: comment above on Pratchett: there's thirty-eight Discworld novels, if you count the YA books. I've got thirty-five of them in ebook format under the download tag on my LJ if you want 'em.

Date: 2008-06-17 07:52 pm (UTC)Also, books. :-D I just finished reading: How to make love like a pornstar - A cautionary tale (http://www.amazon.com/Make-Love-Like-Porn-Star/dp/0060539097/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213732245&sr=1-1). I HIGHLY recommend it. :-) It was not all depressing and all that, but also positive and with a good sens of humor about the whole thing. I couldn't recommend it more. :-)

Date: 2008-06-17 08:29 pm (UTC)Books, I has them: DISCWORLD DISCWORLD YES READ DISCWORLD, also have you tried the Mary Russell series by Laurie King, or the Tuesday Next series by Jasper Fforde? um. Trying to think of others. Oh, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but I've forgotten the name of the author. Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell is sort of interesting, especially after he leaves Paris. THE SECRET HISTORY HAVE YOU READ THE SECRET HISTORY? Donna Tartt. A Little Friend is good too, same author, but I didn't enjoy it as much as TSH.
Oh, you'll enjoy this: the family down on The Compound in Mexico are afraid to try to come visit this summer or get anyone to visit them because apparently they're having a big problem with kidnappings down there. YAY POLYGAMOUS HERITAGE, YAY.
Library Day for Me, Too
Date: 2008-06-17 08:32 pm (UTC)I'm about to start reading The Sonambulist. Non-fiction-wise, I'm working my way through Victorian Lace Today, a Nick Epstein book on knitted flowers (both of which were bought at the kick-ass JoAnn's Fabric sale, where they were 40% off!), and I'm about to pick up Exquisite Little Knits.

Date: 2008-06-17 09:43 pm (UTC)Books I'm reading now:
To inspire me, I have Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. He tried to climb K2 and failed, found himself in a remote Pakistani village, and promised to return their kindness by building a school. He has since built 55 schools, many for girls, in the region that gave birth to the Taliban. Fascinating book.
For mindless entertainment, I have the latest book in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, The Alton Gift. Haven't read one in years, so we'll see if it holds up...especially since MZB has been dead for awhile. Also I have The Good Fairies of New York by Martin Millar. Recommended by Neil Gaiman, with a forward from him. Looks promising.

Date: 2008-06-17 10:03 pm (UTC)Oh, I am SO GLAD you mentioned that book. I saw that a bit ago and thought it looked interesting, then promptly forgot about it. It's written on my "Books To Get" tablet. Thank you!
I use this icon because he is pretty.
Date: 2008-06-17 10:06 pm (UTC)DISCWORLD. I now have 34 of the discworld books and am V V excited about this. I love your list - they all sound like stuff I like. (I think we like similar styles/plots/tropes.)<-- if any of them involve Armageddon, then they will have EVERYTHING I love. :D
WHOA. Kidnappings? By the plygs? Or just vigilantes? I talked to my dad yesterday about Colonia Juarez, etc., and he informed me that some of our long-time Mo friends were from there. o_0 CRAZINESS.

Date: 2008-06-17 10:09 pm (UTC)Oooooh, I'm a big fan of travel writing/travel memoirs, so that sounds awesome! (And as for MZB, didn't she write "Mists of Avalon?" I really liked that.)
The last book you mentioned... I'll have to check that out!

Date: 2008-06-18 09:55 pm (UTC)Books I have read in the last two months (all fluffy stuff)...
Will the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby by Allyson Beatrice (http://www.amazon.com/Vampire-People-Please-Adventures-Fandom/dp/1402208456)
Your fellow Actor thespian (I said thespian!) friend Nick Brendon read it and liked it. It was all right. You would have had funnier material.
Midori by Moonlight by Wendy Nelson Tokunaga (http://www.amazon.com/Midori-Moonlight-Wendy-Nelson-Tokunaga/dp/0312372612/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213825303&sr=1-6) Fiction, total fluff it's the equivalent of those Sweet Sixteen teen romance novels, but it was a fun superfast and easy read.
I also read

Some interesting bits, but she doesn't know Chinese food at all Yep, I'm a food snob especially when it comes to Chinese food.

I can recommend a lot of food related writers, books, travelogues and memoirs to you if you're ever interested. :D
My sister is trying to convince me to read read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It's a novel about vampires or something, but I feel like fiction takes more time to read than non-fiction. Does that make sense?
I've only read Anchee Min's memoir. I guess the series is fiction? Okay gotta run son #1 is crying from his nap. Will chat soon!!!! Love you!

Date: 2008-06-19 05:35 am (UTC)Well, sometimes I have the maturity of a 12 year! Hahah...good! I looked at Twilight and it looked like a snoozefest. My sister is a voracious reader and she reads EVERYTHING-good and bad.
It was good because I think she thinks and eats like a Chinese person. The other one she had no cred imo and her take on "Chinese" food was very Americanized-fortune cookies and takeout boxes. Maybe also because I already knew a lot of the stuff she was talking about already and also I think her name is dumb. :D
