I totally got choked up and teary when I drove home and heard that MJ died. I'm not even gonna pretend to be cool. What makes me sad is that all my kids know of him is the freakish mess he became, they don't get how important he was to my generation.

My *DAD* jumped up and ran over to watch the TV the first time that he Moonwalked. The next day he came home with Thriller. We used to listen to "Off The Wall" at dinner. I remember being freaked out when he made the Pepsi commercial and his hair caught on fire. Freakin' "Beat It" was all you'd hear in the halls when I was in the 5th grade. There's no one else on earth that can even compare to the legend of this man. My god, Masai warriors recognized his picture!!

Yes he was allegedly bad (I'm not going there) but just try and listen to the song "Ben" and not realize that he was a product of an abusive and bizarre life. You don't get peaches from an olive tree, you know?

Just sad. He has three kids that look healthy and normal and they now have the Jackson family as their only legal guardians. Terrible.

I'm right there with you. It's just surreal. His poor kids.

And they look so... normal. I'm sad that Debbie Rowe gave up all parental rights, so she's not even on the LIST for people to take care of them. You don't want them with LaToya, you know?

Bah, I just listened to Ben again - so sad and desperate. And he wasn't even 14.

I am so sad for those children because it is clear that well their grandparents aren't fit to raise them, there I said it. Maybe Janet as she seems to avoid the rest of the family could give them a normal life. It is so hard to lose a parent when you are that young.

I remember watching him on tv singing 'ABC...123' when he was little kid with the Jackson 5. I was even littler than he was but I thought he was so cute. What a smile...

And then 'Off the Wall' and 'Thriller' It was everywhere and he was still so cute.

And then whoa....it all got very weird. But he was part of everyones growing up memories who was born between say - 1960 and 1980 or thereabouts.

I'm with you on feeling sad for him and his children.

SHoot, I don't think ANY of the Jacksons are fit, not even Tito, and he got away early.

6!! The youngest, "Blanket" is only six. So sad. And you know all sorts of people are going to come out of the woodwork with stories, too.

Saturday morning was all about the Jackson's cartoon and the Cosby Kids, you know?

Yep, those memories of the 70s and 80s when he was amazing still sit with me, too. I'm so sad for the kids - and all the stuff they're going to have to endure over the next few weeks? Poor babies, they didn't ask to be a part of any of it.

Totally and completely right there with you! And I think you said it best with you don't get peaches from an olive tree. What a horrible life he must have had and yet he created this amazing music. I can't even wrap my brain about what he was like on a personal level but I always felt like he was the loneliest man in the world.
I met him in 1986 and it was INSANE. I was so nervous that when I was talking to him I could only look at his shoulder! When he got farther away from me I actually looked at him but still - it made me realize why those girls scream so hysterically in the footage from concerts. I did not scream hysterically until AFTER he left the bookstore. Then I laid down and twitched like I was having a seizure. From then on [makes flapping flaps with one arm] became the mocking sign language name for me all over the bookstore - because my little fit was witnessed by about 15 people!. I could not deny it either. This was all before the craziness factor in his life jumped by 150% too.
I can't believe he's gone.

I had to turn off the TV, I kept getting choked up. Michael Jackson was my childhood staple. The "Bad" album was the first music I ever owned, yes "Bad" on vinyl exists in my life to this day.

I am just glad that I was witness to his golden years before what the younger generations will remember.

I can't watch footage of him when he was younger - it's just too much of a contrast to the wreck at the end. Makes me want to weep.

HI!!! I just had your latest post open to send you a message.

And exactly that - it's so difficult to see what he turned into. Sad business, all around.
