Holy moley, The Blair Witch Project's last few minutes -- I agree those were some of the most frightening *ever*. I'm trying and failing to think of other instances that inspired the same intensity of feeling; not just the sudden shock of "gotcha" where something's jumped out, etc... It took the build-up of the previous storyline to get that payoff.
I adore The Last Unicorn so much, and in fact re-read it just a few months ago for some reason. Peter Beagle is an incredible writer and I also highly recommend The Innkeeper's Song. Any of his books, or short stories, really...
