I love soldiers. Anyone that is willing to put their life on the line so my lazy ass doesn't have to has earned way more than just my respect. I feel that their families need some recognition, too. I know how hard it is to have a husband gone for months at a time, but I don't have to worry about bullets whizzing past him.

Dogs welcoming their soldiers home: If you can watch all of the videos here and not be moved, well, you're as cold as ice. (Willing to sacrifice our love!)

The last clip is a compilation of clips of soldiers surprising their kids in school. OH MY GOD. Tears ahoy hoy. (Thanks [livejournal.com profile] solispsae for the link.)

This double posting brought to you by dogs being rad. (And my Sally Derg keeps making the "barroo?" head tilt every time I play one of these videos. Lol.)

I remember welcoming Dad back from his third tour in Vietnam. I remember having to leave him behind in Saigon when I was not quite 4 as part of the evacuation, ten years before that third tour.

It's too big to think about or write about, in some ways. I'm just so glad he made it home.

The one with the soldiers and their kids?

I'm sobbing.

I was seven when my dad came home from Desert Storm. I still remember when my mom took me and my brother and sister (there were only three of us then) to go meet him when he came home. I climbed up his back like a monkey and didn't want to ever let go. My sister had been a tiny baby, maybe three weeks old, when he was deployed, and when he returned, she was big enough to pull herself to standing to grab his knee. Crazy as it sounds, I think that on some level, she still remembered who he was.

Many tears, especially the last one. My dad served in the Air Force from the time he was 18 until the day he died (when I was 17). He had to go TDY (temporary duty) several times when I was a kid, and twice was gone for a full year. The hardest thing in the world was watching him go, and the best feeling in the universe was having him come home.

Thank you for that.

Oh wow...that last video of the dads surprising their kids at school... It broke my heart!! I can't even imagine what that must feel like. To be gone for so long and in danger, then coming back home safe and sound and seeing your child for the first time in so long or even seeing your child for the first time ever. So touching. Thanks for the link.

i'm a vet. well, i was for 3 years. and i married a vet, and helped him through 20. he did desert storm, we did germany together for 3 years, and i learned independance from his year in korea and the various crisises that came along while he was training and helping others train, usually gone for 9 months a year. and the other 3 months? well, he would have one month vacation, and 2 months of working but coming home each night.

he and i have been married for 31 years. he's suffered a service related disability. and he considers what i did was being a single mom. yeah, i earned my gray hair. and the smile on my face.

I couldn't speak words when watching the "dergy" videos. Well, not real ones, anyway. It was just... so happy. :')
