:( The eyes of Texas are upon you, McCoy
Jan. 8th, 2010 09:13 amGrumpy this morning and I ground my teeth all night. The game last night was an absolute knuckle biter. I mean, it's all of the stuff of legends in there. For those of you that watch Friday Night Lights, think of Ep. 1 with the Freshman quarterback having to go in after a shocking injury (McCoy's wasn't shocking as Jason's, which is... more on that later.) and this kid has NEVER been tested in a game before.
And this game? NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. 100K crowd. Televised all across the country. First game for a FRESHMAN. And damn it if he didn't pull up to close to even before a few heart breaking mistakes. Gilbert: you are my personal Matt Saracen, and I heart you tons, you really did your daddy proud (and us fans, too.) Man. He played the best team in the country and gave them a run for their money, FIRST FREAKING COLLEGE GAME HE'S PLAYED IN.
Now. McCoy. I have followed you since you shadowed Vince Young. I have cheered for you, I have yelled on your behalf when I felt you were wronged, and I don't give a good god damn that your daddy wants you to think of your NFL career, you knew that you weren't that badly injured, you wanted to get back in so bad you were spitting nails. And what did your daddy tell you to get you to acquiesce? It was God's Plan. God didn't want you to play in the biggest game of your college career. To win the game that has the guy that took your Heisman. (Well, he may have deserved it a little. Still.) I cannot believe you sat on the sidelines. That being said, that kid pulled himself up by YOUR 'NARDS and is going to continue the tradition of Texas having outstanding quarterbacks.
That whole team rose to the occasion and followed a new leader and did the best they could. Shipley is going to be an amazing NFL player. <3 I was emailing
If you want to watch the most amazing and heartbreaking game of all time, this playoff game between Plano East vs. John Tyler, a high school playoff game. Everyone had gone home, reporters, too, except for the high school radio broadcasters. No one thought Plano East could come back with the game in JT's favor, 41 - 17 and only 3 minutes left. This is the stuff of legend, folks. The emotion those broadcasters have for those high school kids'll give you chills. "I done wet my britches!" :)
COINS PROJECT: Guys, I am just plain running out of time and don't have the energy to brave the single digits out there, so what I get sent out today is going to have to be it. Y'all have been absolutely astounding with your generosity on this, and I thank you. My offer to still go through PayPal (you directly mail me, I immediately refund you the shipping costs through PayPal) stands for anyone that wants to go that route, but I completely understand you not wanting to in the end. Thanks anyway, truly.
I need to take an aspirin, I ground my teeth all night. :( We'll Hook 'Em next year, just you watch.

Date: 2010-01-08 04:11 pm (UTC)I was talking to my sister about the games we watched when we were younger - didn't coaches usually put the backup in at the end of games when the score wasn't close? When did that stop? Was it for the BCS and the resulting "need as big a point differential as possible" thing? Because Landry Jones had no snaps, Zac Robinson's backup had played, like, 2 downs, and McCoy's backup had no reps either.
I really like McCoy, Bradford and Tebow, people-wise. It's a little weird.
Re: Full Disclosure
Date: 2010-01-08 04:17 pm (UTC)I think you have egos at play re: back up QBs in. Romo (Cowboys) has a record with the team - had before last week - of being the only QB in the game for every offensive play. I think these guys just want to drive up their numbers. *shrug* BAH.
Re: Snarky Comments
Date: 2010-01-08 04:49 pm (UTC)And as a neutral fan. I was upset at not getting to see the 'real' Texas with McCoy leading the attack, and the game it could have been. And you could tell how demoralized that team was when they realized he wasn't coming back in. But I was also proud with the effort they put in - Texas had every opportunity to crumble (like Oklahoma did against USC) but they didn't. They fought back and turned it into a game I didn't think could be.
And yeah, McCoy doesn't get his Heisman or Title Shot - but I'm still going to remember him as one of the most successful quarterbacks in College Football History - a tough and smart player who took a beating but led his team to outstanding seasons. There's a lot to be proud of.
And also "Colt McCoy" is still the most perfectly awesome name there can ever be for a Texas QB.

Also, hi! Long-time lurker, first-time commenter. ;D I just couldn't keep my mouth shut when I saw you discussing the game, since it's what's been on my mind all morning.

Just let me know which you prefer.

Date: 2010-01-08 09:14 pm (UTC)I do give props to Gilbert, apparently, after the dismal first half, he played one HELLUVA good game, pulling his team to within three against the number one team in the nation. Awesome job!
And I feel HORRIBLE for Colt McCoy. I read on yahoo Sports an article that talked about him throwing a few balls back and forth with his dad, and how his arm just felt numb, and he couldn't even manage an accurate 7 yard pass. Poor guy. And seeing where the Bama defender hit him? yeah, I believe it. Right under the shoulder blade, into that cluster of nerves. Stunned 'em, is what I bet happened. Poor guy. should have been the GREATEST night of his LIFE, even IF he'd have lost (which I really do think would have happened, Bama is one seriously conditioned FB team) and it all goes down in flames from a badly placed hit.
Hopefully, he will be able to go on to the next level, and continue to kick some ass there, too.

Date: 2010-01-09 12:49 am (UTC)DO I HAVE TO CUT A BITCH?! *g*
I, of course, wanted Ingram to win, and even though my second choice was Suh (dude is a defensive BEAST), I also wanted it for McCoy. In everything I've seen of him, he seems like such a *genuine* kid. The interview with him right after the game made me tear up. My heart hurt for him when he couldn't go back in last night, and as much as I don't think Alabama has anything to apologize for or has to try to justify the win last night (a shit ton of AU-leaning blogs/fans are doing the whole "Alabama never would have won with McCoy in" crap. Why do I put myself through that? No clue.), I would have loved for us to have beat McCoy. The best beating the best, you know?
Gilbert is going to be crazy good when he has some experience under his belt. To be a TRUE FRESHMAN and come in your first game in the national championship against the nation's #1 total defense? HOLY SHIT. And with Texas being a relatively young team on both sides, it's only going to get better for y'all as he gels with receivers, etc.
I'm thinking next year when we're playing each other again, a trip might need to be arranged. ;)
