I filmed a commercial for LeapFrog this morning, which meant loads of kids on set. And of course, their mothers hopped them up on sugar, fed them sodas (but they're free!) while they waited off stage, and turned them loose onto me and the other actors playing parents. Most of the kids I was working with were just fine, hey, I'm good with kids of a certain age. But the other actors you could tell were very quickly losing patience.

And then there was Charlie. Charlie was a mop-headed blonde kid with big Basset hound blue eyes, about six years old. Charlie had on a Superman t-shirt. But it was no ordinary Superman symbol, it was inside a Star of David. So I asked him, "Did you know that Superman was the most awesome Jew that ever fought comic book crime?" And I expected a blank look because again, he was about 5 or 6.

"Uh huh! He's my favorite! This is a Star of David! I'm a Jew!"

I asked him if he had a lovely Seder last night and he about flipped out. YES. AND HE LOVES MATZOH. AND AND AND... He was off running. (Verbally, not physically.) And we talked about how awesome Passover is, and he told me about the plagues and he told me about his favorite foods, and how he gets to find the matzoh tonight and how he's a Jew because his mom is, but his dad is only a Christian but he's helping Charlie be the best Jew he can be.

This is before he held my hand and sang for me "No Woman, No Cry." And then some G-n-R. (Welcome to the Jungle, natch.) I almost stole him away, and I told his mother so. Coolest kid ever. (I asked him about Hanukkah, and if that was his favorite because it's eight days and eight crazy nights, which led him to sing that song for me. We got along swimmingly. And yes, it's his favorite because 8 days of gifts is "way better than one lousy night" of gifts. LOL.)

Some days it's lots of fun doing what I do. And some days it just takes one cool person to not make me rethink this whole gig. And since I stayed up waaaaay too late to get up so early, I'm off to nap in the sunshine.

I love kids like that. The "cool" ones are so dull and the babyish ones don't interest me. But there are kids who will carry on long conversations on subjects that fascinate them, and I find myself fascinated with them -- even if it's a subject I usually find dull. Enthusiasm and understanding go a long way in my world.

HE WAS TOO CUTE. Like, he's that little kid that gets hired because he "looks cute" and then turns out? HE ACTUALLY IS AWESOME. He kept sticking his tongue out while he willed his hands into pommesgabels.

lml -_- lml <-- OMG I WANT TO STEAL HIM.

He was so excited to talk to me about music. And goodness: who wouldn't want to talk about the Beatles with a 6 year old? It's too much!

YAY! Hey, if you get the chance you should put it up on You Tube so us plebs can have a gander!

You know what would have been even more awesome, crouching down, tousling his little head and telling him that god doesn't exist and that when he dies it's lights out for good. AND IT COULD HAPPEN ANY TIME!

And that's how I lost my job at the daycare centre.

That kid rules so much, like seriously rules. Reminds me of when my friends kids were younger, we would have discussions about politics (!!), pop culture, food, fun stuff like that. Also reminds me of high school, in one class I helped out with grad 2s, One little boy, the sweetest little guy ever, brought me a Christmas gift . . I am still using it nearly 7 years later!

(oh, by the way, I friended you because you seem cool, and my friend linked me to your Twilight posts. I like you, you seem really nice.)

I tried not to laugh when he said that, too, because he was so EARNEST about it! (And I later talked to his mom - what a cool lady. The complete opposite of the typical stage mom.)

He's very excited about looking for the special matzoh tonight. <3

Hello! Welcome aboard the crazy train. :D

I love it when kids are so happy about a topic and just can't help but ramble. Especially when it's something that defines them, too. SO CUTE.

And how cute about the little boy with the gift for you!

Hellooooo!

Your icon is cute!

It is rather adorable. Like this one girl I use to baby sit . . . she really likes her French classes and we once had a 10 minute conversation about a story she wrote for class. It was about a frog. It was adorable!!!

Oh that little boy from class, such a dear! Big blue eyes, a mop of blond hair, and when he took his glasses off, he went cross eyes. I kinda miss him, what a nice kid.

My husband gets the same way about TV and movies. I get the same way about make up, Star Trek, DC comic books . . . yaay geeks!

What a great kid! Sounds like the kind of person who will grow up to do fantastic things. Very cool.

We had a LeapFrog several years ago; it was fairly popular but wore off quickly. I think the idea is a pretty good one but kids move on to the "real thing" (computers) very quickly these days. There's a lot of very good computer software that's both educational and fun, so I am surprised that LeapFrog is hanging in there against that competition.
