I looooooove him. I'm on the A&E boards for the show often (so I can confirm things before I post) and get so angry when people don't get it and complain about him. I don't know how anyone can see him (or Dr. Zasio, the other polarizing person) as being mean. Firm? Tough? Sure. But mean? Nah.

He isn't mean at all! He's good with boundaries, and not backing down in the face of the disordered (and sometimes plain manipulative behavior) of the people they're working with, but no one takes more delight in people conquering this stuff than he does. (Or deals with a closet full of poop with more equanimity!)

Oh and on a Housewives of the NJ sort comment, Middle Eastern culture and behavior is very similar to Italian. I didn't realize this until I moved out East. But that is the reason why R seems so Italian for being Lebanese. Very similar mentality and behavior towards family. Especially your kids. And by your kids, I mean any of the kids in your general area. Because we are all "cousins". Comes with being tribal set in America. It means you can't go to the mall without someone telling your grandmother. *rolls eyes*

Although we don't seem to leave them in the doorway or precariously under trees. I guess that's the difference.
