Mighty Good Cornflakes, Mrs. McDunnough
Oct. 24th, 2005 10:06 amOkay, I did not cut a whore. Or a h0r. Or however the kids spell it. p0wned. Huh?
And if you know the subject header, I enjoy you. I ENJOY YOU. I haven't watched "Raising Arizona" - oops! cat's out of the bag! - in years. Need to fix that. "Sometimes I get the menstral cramps real hard." "You ate sand?" "Hi? You go back in there and get me one of them babies - they got more'n they can handle!" "Ed? You ever... get the feeling of a big weight - pressing down on your chest?" "Yeah, yeah I hear you. But I told Dottie she needs to lose some weight." "You take that diaper off your head - and put it BACK on your sister!"
Good morning! I'll be singing that yodel all day. AWESOME.
In other news: I am a SPAZZ. Actually, that's an ongoing story, so skip it. Fantastic article in today's paper: cocaine ALTERS genes. Okay, that's interesting to me, but dude! Do you have any idea how HARD it is to alter genes? Minus radiation? Or free radicals? Or-. Okay, I'm losing you. But think about it: cocaine use alters your genetic makeup. Not your gametes - you aren't passing this on - they don't think - but this explains why it's hard to kick the habit. Cocaine MAKES your body need it - at the genetic level. Fascinating stuff.
How much do you love me for talking about hicks in Arizona kidnapping a baby to genetic mutation? No? I'm doing that self-congratulatory thing? Huh. LOTS OF COFFEE THIS MORNING. Ahem.
How about a fic rec? Now, since only two of you read my foray into other fandoms this weekend, I get that most of you on my flist are die-hard buffy/angel fans. But... Hmm. I am enjoying the other places. This weekend (after much poking from two of my RPG pals - thank you!) I FINALLY read some of
This in particular is just really wonderful. I AM TELLING YOU ALL: READ IT. If you enjoy the snark...
More links you say? FINE. Have fun knocking George Bush around. HA! You can hit refresh and make it anew over and over and ...
Last: tried to watch "Land of the Dead" this weekend. Meh. "28 Days Later" and "Shaun of the Dead" remain my favorite zombie movies. Except: 28 Days Later is NOT a zombie movie. Which proves my point that zombie movies suck. Except for Shaun of the Dead. Because it's really really funny and kinda scary in some places.
TODAY: do jazz hands. I am looking at you,

Date: 2005-10-24 08:12 am (UTC)Stoney, that link I sent you for "The Matter of Rules" series? Gah, don't read it. The font burns my retinas. Here's a much better link to the same story:

Date: 2005-10-24 08:21 am (UTC)We have Shaun of the Dead on our Netflix queue. Already saw and liked 28 Days Later, it was pretty good. But I'm looking forward to Shaun. Never even heard of Land of the Dead?
BTW, the Globe had an informal poll of some people on the street and asked their favorite scary movie. Several people named Event Horizon, which is actually SF from the description. We've never seen it before, so we put it on our queue. Ever seen it? (Not a zombie movie, in case you were wondering. Just asking, in the general spirit of Halloween and horror movies.)

Date: 2005-10-24 08:26 am (UTC)Oh, we also watched "Conspiracy" this weekend. About the establishment of the Final SOlution by the Nazi government: Colin Firth, Kenneth Brannagh, Stanley Tucci... You couldn't ask for a better cast. Hard facts, hard watching in places, absolutely fascinating from a historical aspect. This is based on a REAL meeting. My husband and I wondered how many takes they had to do in some places - like, I wonder if Colin Firth needed a moment to collect himself after spouting some of those lines, you know?
Have not seen Event Horizon. It looked kind of... lame. I have a bunch of Japanese movies coming on my Netflix queue - they've been routinely freaking me out. Ju-On? Ringu? Audition? GAH. Then there's the old standby: Psycho, Rear Window - that movie STILL gives me chills.
Ooh! I should add Nosteratu! Did you see Shadows of the Dark? (I think that's it) WIth Willem Dafoe and Eddie Izzard and Malcovich? Holy crap, that's wonderfully funny and creepy and beautiful. It's a "making of" Nosferatu. So, so great.

Date: 2005-10-24 09:03 am (UTC)I loved Rear Window so much, because of the taut suspense of it. And the Nosferatu movie was fantastic! We did see that one -- it was both hilarious and indeed creepy. What a great concept.

Date: 2005-10-24 09:01 am (UTC)Jazz hands are LOVE!
I mentioned jazz hands to my mother this summer, and she didn't know what they were. She thought I was crazy. (Well....) There were demonstrations, yes.

Date: 2005-10-24 09:22 am (UTC)And... my inclination is to go the RPS route, because of the whole broken inside part - so I poked around in some fics to get a feel for the nuances of the fandom. And...
The story I recced up there? Take out the smex (soft R - more sensual than hard core) and it reads like a script. You can HEAR Depp.
I don't know that I'll jump into the fandom all the way, but I do like being surprised by a fantastic story - and you don't have to know much to enjoy this fic.
That's another thing that is frustrating for me: I know so many good writers in other fandoms, but I don't know what they're talking about so I can't enjoy the story. (That would be you - I LOVE your writing, but I have GOT to catch up on shows!!)

Date: 2005-10-24 09:48 am (UTC)What about the original Night of the Living Dead, although that's really not about zombies . . .Hmm you may have a point. But then most good horror movies are really about other issues not the monsters. At least IMHO, which is not so humble. *still proud that she convinced her Feminist Theory proffessor that there was a pro-women element to slasher movies*
And you found GOOD PotC *runs to read*

COCAINE. Jazz Hands. Bush. It's CODE. (really? you didn't enjoy Depp? That - and JackDav - are the reason I enjoy that. I fast forward through scenes where they aren't. Depp's pirate cracks me up. Just... like he is constantly drunk and has a joke on his lips - but he can't remember how to get started. Love it.)
