Jack Wild died.

Artful Dodger.
Jimmy from HR Pufnstuf. I had a HUGE crush on Jimmy.

I love you guys, but for the love of god would you STOP SMOKING?! I can't get over how he looked in his later years. PLEASE. Stoney loves you. Stop smoking. *climbs off soapbox*

*climbs back on* I did tell you all that my grandfather had his TESTICLES removed from gangrene? Due to smoking? Okay. PSA over now. And I'm sad. Oliver! is one of my all-time favorite musicals...

i very much want everyone to listen to you about the stopping smoking.

i've been on oxygen for the last week and it's awful. it's also temporary (*knocks wood*). i can't imagine having it be permanent. and sooo many smokers end up on it foreverandeveramen.

bleah.

*hugs you* Are you feeling ANY better? Poor little funky lung.

And Papa also smoked from his traech hole. While hooked up to oxygen. After his third quad-bypass. Yeah, that was comfortable.

Argh - I know people hate being preached to - I'm one of them. But UGH!! *doesn't like it when people are sick*

yeah, i'm actually a lot better than i was. i can't really walk around much, and showering without my oxygen yesterday made me feel like i was going to die. but i have some energy again and i'm coughing much less.

so yay for that.

*hugs you back*

OMG!!!! I'm hanging the black crepe! I had the world's biggest crush on the guy from Oliver, well past my normal crush having years.

Joins you in mourning. **glares hatefully at the tobacco companies**

I had a crush on Jack Wild too. (God, we're OLD!) I just did a Google image search to see what he looked like then, (http://www.stuckinthe70s.com/images/tw1271jack.jpg) because he apparently turned into some sort of a gnome before he died, and i found a page of teen magazines from 1971 (http://www.stuckinthe70s.com/1971mags.htm)---OMG Bobby Sherman! And David Cassidy! and The Osmonds Brothers and the Brady Bunch! Boys in bell-bottoms with lots of hair!!!

I'm going to hobble over to my rocking chair and take my Geritol now....

He had THREE ALBUMS! Of which I did NOT own. Ahem.

*omg loved his Cockney accent so much*

But he was old compared to us! Me! One of us! Don't smoke!

Ahem.

When I had my crush on Jack, he was a Sophisticated Older Man.

Much older.

I missed the Drunken Gnome part of his career, sadly, and now he is no more. But I am still here, radiant with youthful beauty, because I Don't Smoke! Ha ha!

I was young and found him through re-runs... Ahem. :D

And yes! Our lips will stay fuller longer! One of my best friends has been trying to quit for... 10 years? I told her when we all went out for a Girls Night last weekend that I wasn't going to cover for her to her husband anymore. If he asks, argh.

I HATE SMOKING.

My grandfather died from smoking too. Lung cancer and Emphazima at the same time. Not good. I have a lot of friends that smoke, and I don't get it. But I've stopped being the militant anti-smoker I was because I was just alienating people. But when they want to quit, I will happily help. By the same token, I have NO sympathy when they bitch about how they have no money. Yeah, how many packs a day at $6.95 a pack? No money, eh?

IN CASE MY SISTER OR SUE IS READING THIS...

I don't normally bitch and rant about smoking, either. But he was just WITHERED by it. (Jack Wild. Papa was always withered. But then, he picked up a three-pack-a-day habit at the age of 12.)

:(

Isn't it crazy how badly it can age you? I have a friend, she's 25 and she looks at least 10 years older. But she has the combined good habits of smoking too much AND drinking too much. She always just looks so unhealthy, and it's a shame, becuase she's gorgeous.

I was lucky when I tried smoking at 13 - given a cigarette by a Youth Worker! - I just choked and looked a fool, so I didn't bother taking it up.

HR Pufnstuf! I had a HUGE crush on him, one of my first ever. It's so sad, and I tell you what - he was 53 years old!!! That may seem ancient when you're 16, but I'm going to be 53 in 13 years, and in some ways I feel my life is just beginning. What a freaking waste.

I lost both my parents to smoking-related illnesses, and I say to anyone whose philosophy is "we all have to die of something": it's not the dying that's the problem. It's the living a painful and debilitating life BEFORE you die that's the hard part. Jack died of mouth cancer. Can you imagine the quality of life that goes along with that?!

PS His picture on that obit you linked was...there are no words. 53! Gah!!

I know - he looked SO old and ancient. I could hardly recognize him! Such a terrible thing to do to yourself. I had no idea about your parents, Posh!

And I HEAR YOU on the whole "quality of life up to your death" bit. My grandpa was just painful to look at. And he lived in agony for DECADES, still smoking through his traech hole. Gah.

*hugs you*

It will be one year of non-smoking for me next month. I have to say, I'm quite glad I did it, and have since become vehemently anti-smoking. Oh, and here's a nice photo (http://www.notobacco.org/photos/large/photo04.jpg) that makes me proud that I no longer stand up to be counted among them.

Dude, has it been that long? WAY TO GO! Those first few days/week is the hardest and you've put that all past you.

I believe we're all entitled to "pick our poison" in a way - I'm not going to get in anyone's face about something they choose to do, but I can sure feel sad for so much waste - money, life, health...\

Seriously: way to go! That's a great start.

Same age as me, almost exactly- which is, I tell you, much, much too young to die.

I started smoking in 1976 and quit in 1985, but I still get paranoid over having been dumb enough to start.

Julia, off to do more useful stuff. Bah.

Thanks for that soapbox Stoney. My mom's been smoking since she was a teenager. They now think they saw something on one of her X-rays. A shadow. I need to call her to get the results. She's stopped many times, but just goes back to it because, and these are her words "It's the only thing I've got". *sigh*

I thought I recognized that name when I saw it on Yahoo.

Smoking is just about the only vice I don't have :) My daddy was very, very smart. One day when I was 8 or 9, he was smoking a cigar. I said lemme take a puff. And instead of being all indignant, he said ok and handed it over. BLECCCCHHH!

Mom stopped smoking after her breast cancer. She and Dad had tried before, but it never "took" until that. Even after the more sensitive tuberculosis test came out in the late '70s and showed that she had had TB at one point in her life, she wasn't able to quit for the sake of her lungs. She's been free of cigarettes now for, oh, I think about 12 years. Thank goodness.

We lost both her parents to cancer and they smoked almost up to the very end. We sure do hate smoking in this household, yes we do. And we're teaching our kids to do the same.

SAME HERE. My kids always say how sad they are their aunt smokes (OH MY GOD, BETH, I'M SORRY!! They just love you) <-- in case she's reading.

I've talked to the kids about "drinking and driving" and all the points to be made there (never get in a car with anyone who's been drinking, etc.) and my son said, "but mom, you do that all the time."

No, I do NOT! ~Yeah, I do, Morgan does, all of us do!

*headdesk* Son? Drinking ALCOHOL. Milk, juice, water and soda don't count. ~Oh, okay, then because I told the coach you do that all the time.

:| (never a dull moment.)

It reminds me of an Erma Bombeck tale, where she was smacking the underside of a ketchup bottle when the phone rang. Her daughter answered the phone and said he rmom couldn't come to speak because she was busy hitting the bottle.

hahaha!!!

(As to Artful Dodger... Makes me SO glad I don't do anything to excess. Except spazz out.)

I managed to kick an 18 year smoking habit... I did it by going to college. (Did I mention that it was second-hand smoking?) My mom smokes like a frickin' chimney. You know how most smokers say, "Yeah, I know it's bad for me." but they do it anyway? Not her. Smoking is not bad for you. There's no proof that it is. The woman is crazy.
I'm pretty sure that the only reason she hasn't gotten lung cancer is that our family just doesn't get cancer. I come from healthy stock. No cancer, diabetes, heart problems, nothing. We're fat & have mental problems, but are otherwise healthy! :)
So yeah, it was so disgusting living with it my whole life that I never had any urge to start.
