In case you didn't see on the news two days ago, Warren Jeffs, the leader of the largest faction of polygamists in the US is now on the FBI's top 10 Most Wanted list. This is who the Roman character (Harry Dean Stanton) on Big Love is based on.

Here's a news clip about him, with an audio clip of him preaching. [livejournal.com profile] kita0610? You asked a while back if they were like the Taliban. Well, they don't make them cover their faces, but it's pretty close. Nice racist remarks in that clip, too. Here's an article about him in the Salt Lake Tribune. 14th paragraph: see how he treats his wife publicly. There's also an entire section in the SLC paper devoted to polygamy. (There's an inset on the right with the locals' reactions to HBO's Big Love.)

I wonder if they'll work in the exile of Warren Jeffs. They have the real estate business in the show, which in RL is Jeffs' purchase of thousands of acres in Texas and South Dakota. Hmmm.

I saw a thing on this on CNN the other night. The man is a seriously scarey dude. Someone who knows him said he would never allow the law to take him alive.
There is a community called Bountiful here in British Columbia that is one of his. One of the reporters for the Vancouver Sun has been writing an expose of their practices and the plight of the women and children there, trying to get someone in the government to pay attention. Polygamy is illegal here too.

*nods* Yeah, that commune has been in place since the 1800s, right? That was a re-education site for wayward wives from the Colorado City compound. Either Canada or Mexico, to the LeBarons, who are n longer in power and were even scarier than the freak running the show now.

An interesting side note to Bountiful: two of some guy's wives left him, and are marrying each other. They are still in the community, I think, in part to piss off their ex. (same sex marriage is legal in Canada)

he would never allow the law to take him alive.

I'm okay with that. In this case, dead is good; it's hard to hurt people when you're dead. He is one deeply creepy sonofabitch.

Same here. Unless it's going to turn into another Branch Davidian issue, and then we need to enable our best snipers to take the fucker out.

That was the scenario the guy being interviewed was worried about. He said it could be worse than Waco.
As a Canadian, I'm really disturbed that we allow women and children to be exploited like this, and that our Provincial government funds the schools in Bountiful. Schools that don't teach the children anything but the church dogma.

Warren Jeffs is fascinating in that 'horrific car crash but you just can't look away' and 'good lord, someone needs to take him OUT' way. Over the years I've read several novels dealing with aspects of the Mormon church, both the history and the off-shoots of the current church, and though the plots of the novels may be fictional, it's scary to realize that the details of the Mormon church, specifically dealing with men like Warren Jeffs and their sects, are true.

Very scary, right? If you can ever get your hands on any of Dorothy SOlomon Allred's books, she grew up in the tumultuous 1950s period of FBI raids and breaking away from the original intent of the church to the even more inclusionary style that's still around today.

And I stand by the statement that Warren Jeffs is HALF as scary as Ervil LeBaron, who stopped downtown Salt Lake City traffic for four hours while he did pushups on mainstreet yelling at the Church offices for them to recognize that he was the Lion of God.

Whoa. (Ooooh, which books have you read? *pulls up chair*)

Scary, scary man. There's a reporter here who's been writing articles on him since the mid-90s and about some of the kids who've escaped, as well, and it's pretty common to see news reports of some new craziness going on in Colorado City. Gotta love Arizona. =/

Oh, yeah. Loooooooooots of Mormons in Phoenix. (My sister being one of them - or her in-laws at any rate. :D )

It's funny that Colorado City gets all the attention when the north side of Main Street is Hilldale, UT, and is the same damn town. There's a reason they set the town up that way, you know. When State troopers from AZ show up, everyone packs a bag and goes to the north end of the town. Vice versa if the Utah troopers show up. Which is why they're fucked now that the FBI is involved. :D

I read that people are slinking out of town in the middle of the night. Probably heading through Tuba City, and Gallup on their way to Eldorado...

Also: HELLO!!!! *huge squish and hugs and more squishes*

This series sounds more and more intriguing, especially with the background and links that I get from you. If it would just hurry onto DVD, all would be well (i.e., I could order it on Netflix).

It's a great show. Seems like a soap opera on the surface, but scratch it a bit and it's astounding how much they're putting into this. It's tracking with RL events at an amazingly fast clip.

There was a blog article on cnn.com talking to polygamists. They were talking about how great it was (the they being the polygamists). Damn, most of the comments were from guys who thought that this would be great. Are they nuts? These people were all like "Live and let live" kind of responses. If they only knew! Only one comment talked about these women being repressed and brainwashed, etc. Keep spreading the info.
