Twenty points to the person that first names that reference. Good LORD did this ficathon whoop my butt! So. Much. Stress. And how lame is that? It's FANFICTION. *shakes it off* Mine is posted and DONE, whoo hoo! I will say that now there is a list of some FANTASTIC fic, some by writers I've not really read before (I'm incredibly picky, I'll be the first to admit) and there are some real gems. I've barely even touched the surface. Here's the masterlist for the Lynnevitational ficathon.

So. Much. Good. Music!!! [livejournal.com profile] mskakaako got me a subscription to Paste Magazine for a Christmas present, and it could be the greatest music mag out there. I friggin' HATE Rolling Stone and Spin. They tout the same crap over and over, and where's the new up-and-coming bands? The bands that have toiled for years and can't break out of the small club venue? Paste finds them, and better yet, makes CDS and GIVES THEM AWAY. Awesome. Currently, I am ROCKING out to Donavon Frankenreiter. 70s white boy funk with a Parliament bass line. Are you KIDDING me? UH! Just really excellent writing inside, too. It takes me about two weeks to get through an issue, because EVERY article has merit.

[ETA]: and if you are interested in getting a free copy of Paste to check it out, shoot me an email. I know a guy. :D stoney321 [at] livejournal [dot] com. Everything from alt-country to rock to techno to bluegrass to krautrock in every issue.

I also have Harper's magazine staring at me. [livejournal.com profile] anelith? I think I mentioned the article in the latest issue about the Dutch cartoon wars, right? They have a history of political cartoons that was very interesting. That's another subscription I'll never let run out. We'll... not mention my Entertainment Weekly mag, okay? *sheepish* I also finished reading Jonathon Searles' book, Boy Still Missing. Very nice. Not very deep or richly layered, but if you want a book that feels meatier than chick-lit (which I hate), but has that ease of slipping in and out of a story, that's a good one. Engaging, simple and succint. Next on the list is Trap Lines, by Eden Robinson. Anyone? I was given the book, so I know nothing about it.

And last, but not least, because I re-read HP Book the Sixth this weekend: Hermione has told us TIME AND TIME again that no one can Apparate or Disapparate within Hogwarts. Got it. BUT. House Elves can. So... why didn't any Death Eaters (or Fred and George, for that matter, the yin to the DE's yang) Transfigure into House Elves and Apparate into the school? Because that would be a cool loophole to flaunt. I really wish there was a fic or a book by JKR all about Hogwarts. You know... Hogwarts: A History that I can have. :D Thoughts? Recs?

Off to photoshop some funnies and get back into RPing, because I have really neglected my gang, and I meeeees them. (Oooh! last thing: AMAZING sculpture artist. Chad Awalt. Found through Paste. NICE.)

You can't transfigure yourself into a magical creature like a houseelf -- you'd never be able to transfigure yourself back, or at least I believe that's the fanon.

Also, that book killed the fandom for me *mourns*

Noooooooo! It did? Oh, woe!! It has me charged up and looking for answers. I read it so fast the first time, then I couldn't bring myself to read it again... Oh, Dumbledore!

Hmm, but house elves have magic, too, so what's to stop you, as a DE, from making yourself a house elf to get in, then making yourself back? It'd be cool if JKR outlined all the magic capabilities of the various creatures and wizards, etc.

Anyone who doesn't get tht reference should be ashamed. Ashamed, I say!

John Lennon, White Album, second disc, first side, sixth song.

John screams the line into the mike as "Helter Skelter" crashes to a sudden stop with a single guitar blast.

I can't wait to start reading all the lynnevitioanl fics. Hopefully tonight.
And hopefully, I'll do the edits so I can post my story.

Those are great sculptures. I love art.

The Beatles are the only group I can do that with. I listened to my records so often that after a while there no high notes or low notes, just kind of a middle area.

I remember when I tossed them, people were saying I was crazy, I could get money for them. Yeah right. The pressings were so old, they were from the days when the vinyl was thick and you could take someone out if you hit them with it.

So, when I saw you're title the first thing that came to mind wasn't Helter Skelter, or even Family Guy. Of course, I spent 5 hours cleaning the porn room on Sunday, so my mind is still lodged in the gutter...

The political cartoon history article sounds fascinating. In History 12 we did a short unit, but we didn't go much farther than, "this is a political cartoon. Here are some old ones." I'm sure the Danish cartoons are the first instance of violence surrounding a cartoon in the newspaper.

I just started reading the Harry Dresden books. My mum had us buy book 7 for her for mother's day. If she can make it through 7 books without getting pissed off at the characters then there's something to it. First one's really good so far *g*

I think Paste is a great magazine for introducing people to artists. I sometimes have issues with the tracks/artists they pick and the way some (not you but some) long standing Paste subscribers use that magazine as their only source for music. I think Paste is so good that it can make people who take the magazine feel like Paste has already done all the heavy lifting. It is a fine magazine so long as it isn't someone's sole source of music fandom/culture.

Those sculptures are amazing.

Date: 2006-05-23 09:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
Aren't those sculptures awesome?

And I'll say this: I don't have Sirius satellite yet, which will bring George Gimark back into my life (Alternative Nation, an old DJ from Dallas and soooo amazing at finding music). As a result, Dallas has CRAP music. Absolute crap when it comes to new stuff. We have the best Jazz and Classical radio in the nation, IMO (One O'clock Band? WRR? Hello!) So I am at a loss for hearing good up-and-coming stuff. I have kids, I hate concerts, so... how the hell am I supposed to hear good stuff? I can't count on RS or Spin anymore, and I don't have the patience to stream radio on my computer all day long to find gems - stuff I wouldn't hear otherwise.

All the albums I've bought this year - The Little Willies, The Wood Brothers, and now Frankenweiter - all from their recs. And not a bum in the bunch. It totally works for me.

But yeah, anyone who is going to use only one source? Man, I'm a scientist. A researcher. :D Gotta have three or it's not valid, right? heh.

The sculptures are totally awsome. I once had the opportunity to just sit in the workshop of a master wood sculptor in Belize. It is just amazing what people can do with wood.

Paste is good at finding new music, no doubt, and it is hard aprtivularly if you aren't or can't be a concert going type. I just, I see it with both Paste & No Depression (both magazines I love and have taken at various points) this kind of cult of the magazine where the magazine takes the place of the only musical authority. I'm goign to start taking ND again in a few months when I move north b/c I won't be in a center of indie twang music and be hard to keep up with what is new by just walking around with ears open.

It is a shame you can't get Austin stations because, damn, that is some good radio.

I don't mean to sound like a music snob but I guess it comes out every now and again. Sorry. I do think Paste is great, really. And if you ever want a few really excellent mp3 blogs to expand what you are hearing a little let me know & I'll hook you up w/ links.

I'm also completely spoiled by having 2 really excellent Jazz stations in the area (the university stations of the two largest HBCUs in the area are jazz stations). Another thing I'm going to miss when I go.

Multiple sources are good. And new music is EXCELLENT. (-:

So... why didn't any Death Eaters (or Fred and George, for that matter, the yin to the DE's yang) Transfigure into House Elves and Apparate into the school?
I don't think that would have worked. Their bodies might change when Transfigured, but that doesn't mean that their magic would. Also, even if they could use the House Elf brand of magic, it could take quite some time to learn how to use it (not like that's about to stop a determined Death Eater, more of a problem for Fred & George). Filling plot holes is my hobby. :)

Well, I can't point you at a Hogwarts: A History fic (because I don't read fic based off of written works), but there might be hope on the Rowling-written front. Nothing specific, but I know she's already done Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them as little 50-page-ish paperbacks (which are really entertaining, BTW). Who's to say that she won't do more?

Heee! Yeah, I have those little books, and have my fingers crossed for "HOgwarts: A History" to be printed one day. I mean, the way Hermione continues on about it, it HAS to have some significance, right? *hopes* I'm all nerdy and want their text books, you see. :D

And if Fred and George managed it, I would think that it could easily be worked into the storyline that all of that time spent down in the kitchens with the other house elves could have been an "educational" time where they poked and prodded to find out how they work their mojo... *rubs chin*
