I had a fic started last night, and hoped to post today for [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight's b-day, and my computer ATE IT. (Sam? I'll try and fix this, you are my FRED GIRL! Woe.) Nonetheless, happy birthday today, and I hope you have a lovely day, that no horses bite or kick you, that you get lovely gifts, and that your day is full of sparkles and sunshine! (I have actually MET Sam! We've broken bread! Or... Mongolian food. Heh. If Fred had a short red bob and smart clothes, she'd be Sam.) Sam? I have no Horatio Hornblower icons, and my Fred icon is the wrong sentiment, so have an Age of Sail Commodore in the interim. *squish*

Also: gmail is a douche. I owe a few of you emails, and it WILL NOT LET ME.

Off to in-laws to fix their garden, then back to see what all books you rec me for tomorrow is LIBRARY DAY!! [livejournal.com profile] cherusha recommends Jonathan Morrell and Mr. Strange (I am totally screwing that title up, but I have it written down somewhere.) What else do you rec? Light, heavy, fic, non-fic, I love it all!

(Psst: I went running and it rained on me, ducks quacked AT me, and I laughed and feel much better, J, A and S.)

I always rec "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz. History + memoir + reporting + experiential journalism, and one of the best books I've ever read about the South, period. And it's often LOL-funny, to boot.

Also, all slash-fen should try Michael Chabon's "Mysteries of Pittsburgh". Bisexuality and college life and what it's like if your father happens to be in the mafia. You know, the usual coming of age stuff.

Oooooh. The "Confederates.." book sounds ideal! Excellent. I still have to finish my FIRST Michael Chabon book, and I have NO idea why it's taking me forever to pick it up. Ridiculous. (Kavalier Clay... That one. I suck.)

*is rather ashamed I have no icon to represent southernness*

Well, Fred's a Texan --

I definitely think the Horwitz book would be up your alley. I just checked my copy and he doesn't have any chapters about Texas, but visits a bunch of Southern States and, as he's (1) a Jewish guy from D.C., (2) a former foreign correspondent, and (3) a lifetime civil war buff himself, he brings an interesting set of lenses to the issue. Plus there's a whole chapter called "The Civil War-gazm."

That is an absolutely wonderful book. After I finished it, I went back and started again from the beginning and read it a second time.

Glad you are feeling good, Laura. Ducks quacking are funny.

Ducks! I love them. They live at this pond, are MASSIVE, and crack me up with their quacking. They didn't want to get off the path this morning, and let me know I needed to divert to the turf. Heh.

(Who's sick? Poor boys! *hugs*)

Hi there!

Both boys are sick, but Nathan is the one who woke up last night with a fever and had to stay home from school today. Evan I sent off to school with the runny nose, but he's had that for several days now. Allergies? Who knows.

Huh. I think Nathan just fell asleep on the couch. Max is asleep on his tummy. When Ron gets home from work in a few minutes he can help me carry him upstairs and put him to bed. Max blanket optional.

I'm in the middle of Jonathan Strange right now and, yes, it's sooo good.

Another book that makes for excellent reading is Robertson Davies' Deptford trilogy. I took it on holiday with me and read the 800 pages in three days, it's just a great book (well, three actually, but it came in a single volume).

Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series is truly delightful. Starting with Shards of Honor and ending (so far) with Diplomatic Immunity, it's a well thought out space opera, always funny, roll-on-the-floor hilarious sometimes, and occasionally creepy and disturbing (kind of Buffyesque in tone, now that I think of it...).

I forced the teenager to read it and as much as she reads, she still says that it's the best book she's ever read.

And come on, The Thompson Twins do rule.
