Meh. And heh.
Aug. 31st, 2006 12:58 pmStill sick, still whiney, still hiding to keep from spreading germs and whine. Watched a movie that was very hard to take in, but a must-see for anyone who cares about the Civil Rights movement, The Untold Story of Emmett Till. The part that sickens me the most is the wife (Carolyn Bryant) of the man that killed Emmett. 14 years old, put money in her hand for bubble gum. Didn't know (as a Chicagoan) that black boys don't get in situations where they could touch a white woman's hand. So later when he gave a low wolf whistle at her, he was brutally murdered by her husband. But she was never on trial for setting her man on him. I would have liked for the documentary to have mentioned the important role Ebony and Jet magazines played - they showed the very graphic autopsy photos on their front covers and got both national and international interest in the case. Not for the faint of heart.
[ETA] I've mentioned Gwyendolyn Brooks many times in my LJ, but her "The Last Quatrain of the Ballad of Emmett Till" and "A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi" are two of the most powerful poems I've read. They're worth a look, if you aren't familiar already. (I bet most of you are, though.)
In completely unrelated news,
cleolinda linked to something this morning that STILL has me baffled. GELFLING SEX HABITS. On Wikipedia!! What on earth? Folks, I loved The Dark Crystal as much as the next person. Hell, every time I sprained my ankle and had to use crutches, I'd drape a sheet across my back and fly like the Landstriders, sure. DON'T YOU JUDGE ME! Hahahaha. Skeksis. Do not EVEN ACT like you haven't played Skeksis. Or hummed the harmonious call of the Mystics. Okay, now I totally want to re-watch the movie today. BUT ON POINT: why on earth is there an entire wiki page that talks about their "possible evolution" and that "musical artifacts dating back nearly to the very beginning of Gelfling history have been found." They... IT IS MAKE BELIEVE, OH MY GOD.
Whenever I think I've gotten too involved in fandom, or LJ, or that sort of thing, I'm always reminded that I am not on FULL NERD ALERT. Jesus. *totally sells house and children to go on quest for The Shard* Okay, this is really funny. Steven Tyler was TOTALLY in the movie! Hahaha.
Thanks to all of you lovelies from the love meme. I normally don't do those, but that was just incredibly lovely of you. I'll wrap myself in plastic (I'll be in a bubble!) and kiss you all! Spread the love for others! This has been a hard month for a lot of you, I think. *hugs* I go sleep now. (I'm totally not - I'm going to watch The Dark Crystal.)

Date: 2006-08-31 06:59 pm (UTC)The witch from that show... I can't think of her name, but I can only say "Gelfling!" in her screech. AUGHRA! That's it. Heeee! My younger sister Beth and I would do that high, lilting call that Kira does to call the landstriders.
...we were dorks.

I love the bottom box: People who write erotic versions of Star Trek where all the characters are furries, like Kirk is an ocelot or something, and they put a furry verson of themselves as the star of the story. Furries!

Date: 2006-08-31 06:45 pm (UTC)Where did you see the Emmett Till documentary? That sounds fascinating. I had never really thought about the wife's role/culpability in the murder, either, but your take makes a lot of sense.

Date: 2006-08-31 07:03 pm (UTC)When you watch the wife in the courtroom footage, and just after the original verdict of "not guilty" is handed out, she seriously MAKES OUT with her husband on camera. You can tell she's still angry. And... her husband was away when the whistling took place. (Jesus, a kid WHISTLED at her.) She tattled, the whole town spread gossip, and then the 2am kidnapping.
She was the only white in the shop when those kids were in there.

Date: 2006-08-31 07:16 pm (UTC)Heard Debbie Palmer being interviewed about Bountiful, BC, on the CBC's "As it Happens" Tuesday night; forgot, with the mysterious welt and all, to get links when I was on the other computer yesterday (well, that actually had to do with watching The Sentinel blooper reels).
Julia, my brain is still strewn along I-90 between here and Missoula, alas

Date: 2006-08-31 09:00 pm (UTC)I absolutely adore the Nerd Hierarchy and if Ron doesn't catch it on his own reconnaisance through his flist then I'll be sure to point it out to him. What happens if you fall into more than one category? (I'm in at least 5.) I guess you get to look down with condescension on yourself...

Date: 2006-08-31 09:39 pm (UTC)The Warren Jeffs arrest is awesome - now if there can be a flurry of other arrests, this can end. Just jailing him won't change anything, unfortunately.
*hugs you*

Date: 2006-08-31 10:01 pm (UTC)Oh my god, Oprah was "Mmm, hmmm!"-ing to the WELL KNOWN FACT that black women culturally are better kissers than white women. They are interviewing inter-racial couples and it's TOTALLY REINFORCING STEREOTYPES.
I just... HUH? Now I'm gonna have to mock Miss Sofia. "I knowd dey wuz a god." O_O

Date: 2006-09-01 02:14 pm (UTC)And as to Chrissy leaving her horse (she only owns one now - Loki died a few years ago) that would never happen. *g* Doc (her quarter horse) is being chauffered to Florida a day after she leaves to his nice new digs a few blocks away from their house. I'm trying to convince her to come pick up one of the Katrina-victim horsies being boarded by my house so Doc has a buddy. He's leaving all of his buddies at the breeding facility. :)
