Have been kah-rayzee busy lately, all last week and weekend of the awesome/fun variety, yesterday of the head butting until my brain meat shows. Why a five year old needs $30 gloves that AREN'T EVEN WATERPROOF is beyond me. So we didn't get them, because I am not sofa king wee Todd it. The local ski shop (ski trip coming up this weekend through next week) that is also a small chain was filled with idjits, and rude ones at that. Yes, it's a terrific idea to have salespeople who are antagonistic, surly, and don't know what products they even have on hand. So we left and went to the dreaded Wal-Mart. Which I loathe. I HATE WAL-MART and will usually NEVER shop there. Except for how I did yesterday. And of course they had everything, except for face masks, so woot! (little shoutout for remembering to get boot warmers! Hey, we're from Texas, people. Snow isn't our natural environment.)

I get to wait around the house today and tomorrow for deliverymen and repairmen, as we seemed to feel our house was lacking in a ginormous and ridiculous sized new TV. Which also translates to previous TV being in my bedroom, which makes me delighted. Sleeping to TV, ahhhhh. Granted, this means the DVD collection I have will look like crap on the new Monstrosity, but eventually we'll upgrade everything to HD or Blueray. This also means I get to watch FNL and college football on the Big Screen, which makes me happy. Side note: while at the home theater store, a song was playing in the stereo/speaker room and I started cracking up when I figured out what it was. It was the "Live to Win! Never die, Live To Win!!" song from the World of Warcraft episode of South Park. Ahahahahaha!!! Then, Mr. S and I asked the sales guy about burn-in on plasmas, which SOME HOW led to him telling us all about his need for the new Wii game console, so I imitated Cartman's, "Come on. Come eeehhhnnn!!" and then the salesguy went off on his love for Zelda. That was my husband's first real exposure to geeks in their natural habitat. Heeee!

Random things that make me laugh every. single. time: melodramatic "oh my god!"s like on the WoW episode, so they begin with an N sound. "nnnnOh my god." Like the person is holding back a sob? Ahahahaha! Oh Trey and Matt. Never change.

Isn't this the most exciting post you've ever read, ever?? *crickets* And so I move from the minutia that is my life to recs! I really REALLY shouldn't be reading fic - so much to do, zomg - but I did. (germaine_pet? I'll get to your fic this week, it's something I'm looking forward to!!) They are fairly short, tight, concise and well composed.

As Dark Things Are Loved by redbrickrose a B/A fic for the IWRY ficathon (this is the only one I've had a chance to read, sorry.) It's WONDERFUL. The structure, the imagery... It'll bring the show crashing back.
Best Fiends Forever by beer_good_foamy a set of Drusilla drabbles that hit like a punch to the gut. It took me until the second one to get into a groove, and then I fell in. Excellent story telling in drabble form. (I owe that him meaningful feedback, too. Will get there eventually, promise!) And my friends here should know that I have a deep love for Drusilla and Miss Edith tales...

I haven't seen last night's Heroes yet, so hopefully that will be ready to go when I get back from my walk (my backless tennis shoes are doing the trick - still no skiing in my future, however) and then tonight is Veronica and Friday night Lights, which was picked up for a full season, whee! If you aren't watching that show, I just... Guys. It's a GREAT show. Ditto with 30 Rock. Did anyone see Alec Baldwin's hosting gig on SNL this weekend? Good god, I love that man. So smarmy and hilarious. He plays a pompous asshole better than anyone. They have a good cast of newbies on SNL - there's some great stuff, although I miss Rachel Dratch.

Oooh, last thing! (Jeeez, I'm random today.) I read a book yesterday during The Boy's ortho appointment that was apparently written to hit my kinks. Young girl (pubescent. I dun dew younger for the EWWW factor. Remember: Stoney haaaaaaates Lolita.) coming of age in a manner of speaking with the man she babysits for. *shudders* Good. God. Plus, the protagonist has a thing for Playboy. And her same aged boyfriend in school, who shaves her. *passes out* It's a "dark comedy" although I am not really laughing. It's just an interesting and quick read. Not deep, but not fluff, either. Towelhead, by Alicia Erian. Hits on racism, patriarchy, crappy moms, transforming from a girl to a sexual being. Yeah, that was tailor made for me, yep.

[ETA] Have finished book, and it can be ouchie. Am not turned on anymore. Feel guilty for having been turned on, hahaha. Oh, my head. I love how you mess with me. Still, interesting, worthwhile read.

And now I work out, joy! (and let's see if LJ blocks my Elliot from Scrubs icon again. HMMMMM. It says "Hi, I'm a whore!" and she's duct taped to a wall, in case you CAN'T.)

Oooooooo, what kind of tv? Is it plasma or dlp? And most dvd's look really, really good on HD tvs, even if they aren't HD quality dvd's. In fact, most literature I've read says that there's no real need to go to HD/blu ray dvd's yet, because they aren't appreciably better than what's out there. Mostly because most shows *still* don't shoot in HD, even if it's being broadcast as such. So I wouldn't worry.

It's DLP. I'm all about supporting the hometeam, plus they look more realistic to me than plasma. (We watched the Cowboys' game, and the grass looked better, and the long shots looked like peering through a WINDOW on DLP. The plasma looked like a Polaroid. Fareal.)

And as big as our screen is (jeeeeez. We're dorks) you really can tell a difference in quality on non-HD material, I have to say. The blueray/HD quality was mind blowing. The shows we like to watch are coming out in HD now, including NFL, so that's a contributing factor, not to mention that things are switching over more and more. We like to be prepared. :D

And we decided that hands down, LCD is the way to go for SMALL screens, less than 35 inches. My dad's a big technophile when it comes to stereo equipment, what with him owning a recording studio and all, so we brought him along. And convinced him to buy a similar model and set up, hahahaha.

Try working there, LOL. ;) Working at a Wal-Mart is ten times worse than shopping in one. Believe me. I was a huge Wal-Mart basher before I got the job there and frankly, I still am. :) If it weren't for the paycheck I'd have said sayonarra a long time ago! XD

Oh, I can just imagine the hell that is working there! No child can enter its doors without screaming, so that alone would be murder. I'm not a fan of working retail, having done it in the past. It's HARD.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! no. Mostly because I have no idea who Emma Frost from X-Men is. [/lame] Elliot is a character on the sitcom Scrubs, and she made out with a guy, found out he was married, his wife found out, and got her revenge. (On the wrong party.) Scrubs makes ma laugh - it's a great show. :D

If I could knit better, I would knit Emily leeeetle gloveses. But with my current level of expertise, there would probably be ginormous gaps between the cables, and she'd say in that adorable voice of hers, "Mommy? These gloves suck."

FNL catch-up is going to happen over Thanksgiving! And then I have to see, what, Heroes when it goes into repeats (*crosses fingers they show eps in order*).

Oh, hooray for FNL catch up! I think that's a great way to watch a show: several eps all at once. You are going to be squeeing out loud, methinks.

Oooh, you will have to teach me to knit someday. I can crochet like a summbitch, but I cannot knit, and I want to make socks and sweaters and things. But I see the needles, I see the yarn, and I don't know how to make them GO. (And we would tell Emily that the big holes are to let sparkles and sunshine in. Or something. :D)

I was cracking up at the "boring" part of your post. And your DVDs should look fine on the new TV, really. We get an awesome picture on our new 60". It's fabulous for football, Stoney. And for FNL? Oh, if Chris weren't watching that with me, he'd still be watching because I demand access to that on the big screen. *g*

I didn't watch SNL, but Alec was on the half-time show during Sunday Night Football on NBC. He came on in character at first, then they mentioned the show moving to Thursday. He's such a great asshole.

You know... there's something about that movie that made it okay, because I know Swainn was legally old enough. (Holy shit, her on the rocking chair in his lap???) But the book is just too disturbing for me. She's 11 and that's just my squick. But you might like this book I mentioned - check it out, if you're so inclined!

I'm thinking the DVDs etc. will be great on our screen, too (that's what we got, as well. Mr. S tried to push the 75" one, and I just think that's too much. I felt ridiculous. :D) but we watched some of the blueray clips on it? JESUS. Like looking out a window. But better. Sheeeeeeesh!

I had read both thoses stories and I agree with those recs.

I think there should be a law against children growing like dandelions because new ski clothes are expensive. Even worse - Doodle's 150 dollar roller blades, bought in the beginning of the summer are now outgrown. My poor husband was flabbergasted. I pointed out that Z has grown close to 5 inches since then.

Your Z is like my #2 - she's a WEED. The BFF was here this weekend, and they're almost the same height - and #2 is 9!!! She's a pricey one, to be sure.

I wish the Greek "*spit spit* Too soon, too soon!" method worked on keeping kids shorter, longer.

Oh, well good thing you didn't loan it, as I had a copy and I would have felt bad for you spending shipping costs! :) And it's not a prepubescent book - that's what I was emphasizing. I don't like books with children who aren't biologically sexually capable in sexual situations, like Lolita. I was just getting that point across, is all.

Hi. Thanks for the recs; maybe I'll get a chance to read them sometime this incarnation. Nice clear day, probably the only unrainy day this week, and rather than getting work done in the garden (I have BULBS to plant) I have to go buy plumbing parts, and shampoo, and ship a package to Montana, and do it while shifting my husband around town to deal with someone stealing his debit card information (bank, cops, et'c and so on).

OH YAY!! I was watching the local news, and they were interviewing "Angela" and "Kelly" from the Office. Angela is from Texas, and she was laughing about how hot Texans are, and she asked her little brother (who plays for Argyle? I think) if he was watching FNL, and he replied (say in Texas accent) "Watch it? I'm livin' it."

Oh, and about Lolita - I can totally understand the eww factor putting you off, it did for me too, for years. Then I read it and it turned out to be one of the most mind-boggling novels I've read. It's hardly yay-sex-with-underage-girls-is-fun - at least not once you realize that the narrator is lying through his teeth throughout the whole thing. Not for everyone, admitted. But thanks for reminding me to check out Towelhead, I read about that a while ago and then forgot about it.

Hi!! And I hope pimping you was okay - I checked your user info just now, and saw that you might want people to tell you before hand, so hopefully I haven't upset you - I just wanted to make sure people read a great fic. :)

And while I understand the point of Lolita - I've had a few academic discussions about it, as well as emotional ones - my main problem is how it's RECIEVED. Check any modern printing and it's referred to as a black comedy. I'd like to think I know from funny, and honestly: I have NO boundaries when it comes to humor. Gallows humor? Bring it. I just don't see how such a depressing book (the end left me feeling dead inside) is black humor. I just have personal issues with that novel, even though TECHNICALLY the writing is superior to most modern literature.

I rewatched that ep this weekend and cracked up at Stan's dad being told that the "bad guy" is going to destroy the world (of warcraft.) HI! I knew you were BUSY. It's been kinda that way for me too. But I've missed you! So you opted for the DLP, huh? I'll have to tell Ron. He's been deliberating on what to buy for sooooo long. Frankly, I leave the decision to him, because I don't want to do all the research. He thinks it's fun.

I hate Walmart too. I saw in the paper that their business was down some amazing percentage from last year, like 28%, and it was because of customers having bad perceptions of them, according to a survey. Pigeons really do come home to roost, heh.

So you bought gloves and boot warmers? Are these just for winter in general or for a trip? Do you have snow pants too? I dread the school mornings when I have to get the kids dressed in snow pants, boots, mittens, hats, parkas... and of course remember to put plastic bags in their backpacks for the wet stuff to come home in. These mornings will be coming soon.

Argh, things have been silly busy, and no end in sight. Well, not until we pull out in the family car at 6am on Friday, that is! :) (I'm really looking forward to a vacation. That means a) Mr. S will not work for a solid week and visibly relax and b) the kids will have LOADS of children to run around with and play and c) my cousins are all my age and lots of fun/funny.

The gloves/boot warmers are for the ski trip, as we really REALLY don't need that sort of thing here. Oh, people here buy outrageous winter gear, but having actually lived where it gets cold? I laugh at my people. :D We're still comfortably wearing capris now!

And honestly, I got all of the techno knowledge off Wikipedia (such a great site) but all of the final decisions came from watching different programs on each of the TVs. If you're not going over a 40" tv, LCD is fantastic. Plasma just wasn't different enough from DLP to make me pick that, especially given the price. Plus, if kids play video games on a plasma and pause the game and leave it, there's burn in, like on old computer monitors and Excel spreadsheets. :) NO THANKS. My kids forget stuff like that all the time. (And DLP is local grown, so I'm all for supporting TI.)

HEE!! And new Scrubs this Thursday, whee! I'd just been traveling is all, and yeah. Bad knees needing replacing translates into skiing makes me cry and pass out from pain. So. Snowshoeing it is! (Skiing in MA? Aw, that's adorable. Have you SEEN the Rockies? hahaha! KIDDING. kind of)
