Duh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh! You say it's your birthday? [/Farmer Ted] entrenous88 will get that, because she's AWESOME like that. Happy Birthday! (there's a little sum'in sum'in coming at you later...) I will administer the birthday spankin's upon your arrival here in Texas in a mere three weeks, whoot!

ION, we signed #2, my eldest daughter, up for softball. Last night was the first game against the Ladybugs.


This is the recreational league, specifically chosen for the FUN factor, not the competitive factor. Parents aren't allowed to heckle, be asses, etc., and kids learn first and foremost how to PLAY and have FUN. \o/ That being said, and also throwing in that this is the first year of play for 75% of my kid's team (the 9-10 year old division, aka 3rd and 4th grades.)

HOLY CRAP THE OPPOSING TEAM'S PITCHER. Now. 1) we didn't realize it was FAST PITCH softball. (for those who don't know, that's the underhand pitch that is SO BAD ASS and only in girl's league. I'd like to see some boys attempt that.) 2) I didn't realize a 10 year old could be 5' 6"!!! I am not exaggerating. I casually walked past her and my kid greyed and nodded, "yep, she's as tall as Mom."

She got up on the pitcher's plate (they don't use mounds) and threw a practice pitch. The WHOLE STADIUM OooooOOOooh'ed. 10 years old, and can throw at 50 MPH. Um... She had SIGNALS for her catcher! They all had signals! The wipe, rub, thumb, clapclap signals! (Random: my husband and I do this around his mother all the time, like we're talking about her surreptitiously. The final clapclap is key, hahahaha.)

Needless to say, the Blaze (my kid's team) lost. But! They had fun, and my kid got two fouls and a baseline hit off this monster, so \o/, again I say \o/. Hee! #2 has a definite ability to throw, we just need to show her how to choke up on the bat a bit more for control, and she's going to be terrific. (I mean, she IS terrific already, but there's nothing wrong with getting better.)

Emily and I are off to the dentoost to make her pearlies more... pearly. I want a strawberry, spinach, bleu cheese salad today. Hmmm.

Whoo!! She's such a good athlete - swimming, biking, basketball... She TOTALLY gets it from her bio-dad, as I am NOT adept at team sports.

DUDE, I KNOW!! My jaw literally dropped when I saw that first pitch.

(And there was some controversy - our coach was all upset on behalf of our team, and the girl, too, because she should be on the select league, not the rec league. And she could catch like nothing, too. Most of the girls dropped 60% of the balls/didn't catch them. SO she was out there just casually plucking the ball out of the air!)

Nathan has his first soccer practice today. It'll be muddy, cold, and probably raining. Bleh. I'm not much of a team-minded mom! He's very excited though.

The pitcher was TOTALLY out of place! I just got an email from the coach telling us that the umpire told her coach that she should be on a select team, not rec. Like... she had the skill set of a high school or even college player. Amazing to watch, sad for my team :)

(I'm not a good team mom, because when the game's over, I'm ready to GO. Also, I don't have a team jersey like some of the others. o_0 where did they even come from?!) Go go Nathan! I'm sending you mental thoughts of bleach and laundry soap for those possibly muddly clothes post-practice. :D

I didn't realize fast pitch started so early, but then again, I live in the 'burbs where there are select soccer teams for FOUR YEAR OLDS. ?? Way to start the competitive nature early!

I was a catcher until college, when we had three catchers on the team and I got moved to second base because I wasn't the best of the three :) I got to get rid of the gear in hot hot hot weather, so I wasn't about to complain.

Competitive anything at 4 is wayyyyyy too early. There's no skill development and time for fun!

Oh. I hate to ask but if I posted some picture of the plants in our yard, could you give me your best guess about what they are and what the heck I need to do to keep them from dying?

There are things that are PRUNED, Stoney. PRUNED. I have no idea what they are or why on earth I would need to prune them.

We also have a retaining wall that drops almost 6 feet and our dogs have figured out not to jump off it, but we're thinking of planting some shrubs along the edge in the event of children. You know, provide a visual cliff and all that :) So I will pick your brain as long as you will let me.

Um...I, uh...I was 5'6" at the age of 10.

Mind you, I'm still 5'6".

However, at no point in my life did I have a 50 mph fastball.

And if you can't get your hands on strawberries, go for granny smith apples and candied walnuts with the blue cheese. Many yum.
