I planted *such* boring stuff -- salvia and marigolds and alyssum. But the salvia and marigolds did fairly well last year, so I'm hoping they will do OK this year too.

Oooooh, I love salvias! They give such a pop of color. I have alyssum and marigolds, too. I'm a fan of tucking annuals amongst the perennials, personally. In your shady spots, you might think of impatiens - can you do those up there?

Wave Petunias (it's a specific kind) are nice in sunny spots - they really fill in bare spaces with LOADS of flowers, and are trouble free.

*itching to plant* We've had non-stop rain here for DAYS, so there's no gardening for me down here...

I had great success with impatiens before we had our huge pine trees cut down in the front, then the next summer when I planted impatiens in the same spot that I'd always put them, they really didn't do well -- I guess they had too much sun! So that's when I started switching to annuals that required more sun. That side of the house faces pretty much due west, and gets a few hours of fairly intense sun right in the late afternoon.

I had some petunias one year and they grew half-heartedly, but I think it was the variety. They seemed to be the kind meant to trail over a hanging basket? I should have looked at the description more carefully.
