SAW THE MOVIE LAST NIGHT.   ETA:  This has been up for enough days that I think it's okay to warn that I was not in love with this movie. 

SO FUCKING PISSED. I'm sorry to start off swearing. I have a HEAD ACHE and have had one since half-way through the movie. I must revert to bullet points, or I'll be here all day.

• OKAY. Dudley. What is wrong with your mouth that you can't get words out? BAH to the weird playground. Too "arty" and not fitting in. Also, Harry having his wand up Dudley's neck with all of his friends around? Although hahaha to the Chav necklace on him.
• ARABELLA FIGG and her complete APATHY. What. I ask you!! There was no tension whatsoever with this woman. This is a reoccurring theme, unfortunately. "Lalala, Dementors. *shuffle along*" I'm sorry, but I must point to the book on this one.
• What the what with Vernon looking like he couldn't bully a pillow, let alone Harry and Petunia all sexed up? My husband leaned over and mentioned how hot she was, minus the sour face. Agreed. Also, WHERE WAS HER HOWLER? More on that.
• Why is it that Harry had sexual chemistry with EVERYONE BUT Cho? Hi, Tonks and Harry at Grimmauld Place (which... no. That house was not working for me. In my head Sirius' home was a mansion. Where's the screaming Mrs. Black? Where's the fear/repulsion from.for Kreacher? Again, see lack of tension.)
• Speaking of chemistry, my husband asked me when Sirius and Harry were going to get it on. o_0 Yeah. (Okay, where's the fic?) Also, where was the tension with Mrs. Weasley and Sirius? Where was the cleaning of the Black house? They could have had exposition of the Order over the kids doing it - it would have added much needed levity, imo. (Also I believe FIRMLY that the "heavy locket that couldn't be open" on page 116 in OotP is the horcrux Dumbledore seeks out in Book 6. FIRMLY BELIEVE THIS.)
• There was too much weird wasted time, and the timing was off for the first hour. It felt like it was dragging to me, and this is a Harry Freaking Potter movie. Once the DA got started, THEN it felt right.
• Argus Filch running makes me laugh every time. The DA was awesome.
• THE PUNISHMENT WASN'T SEVERE ENOUGH. Dolores Umbridge was irritating in this movie, she didn't make me feel like she is evil. Not until she slapped Harry's face did I get that feeling. (That whole bit was very good.) "I must not tell lies" should have been written over and over and over again. It should have healed over, then they cut it in again. WHY DID THEY NOT CONSULT THE BOOK? That's what makes it so horrible: having to do it over and over until it "sinks in." (The Weasley twins consoling that poor little boy? At first I thought something shifty - read: sexual - was going on, then I figured it out, and thought it was lovely of them. Um... Why was I thinking the Weasley twins were soliciting sex from a small boy, Mr. Director???)
• OKAY. Weasley Twins. They made a POINT to not disrupt OWLS. And yet... I would have liked to see Filch punting people over the swamp, also. And where was the teacher's quiet rebellion? Where was the REASON the Twins were leaving? You should have emphasized that, Mr. Director!!
• GRAWP. I'm okay with there BEING a Grawp, what I was NOT okay with was the trio's LACK OF FEAR FOR HIM. See: lack of tension part a million. Um, there is a 16 foot giant in front of you and he moves ALARMINGLY FAST. You'd think those kids would have flinched or something.
• WHY DID RON NOT FREAK OUT OVER HERMIONE SAYING HARRY WAS A GOOD KISSER?! I ask you. Side note, holy guh, did he look like a good kisser. ALSO: uh... that scene was pretty porno. With the changing camera angle to slide up Harry's body? *moans*
• One of my BIGGEST COMPLAINTS: Harry. HARRY mo fo POTTER would NEVER EVER give Malfoy the prophesy. NEVER. He GAVE it to him! And then what, it accidentally just dropped?! GAAAAAAH. And! And! And!! What the WHAT with the removing the most important part OF the prophesy!? *beats head* WHERE WAS MY MOMENT TO KNOW ABOUT NEVILLE? Where was the CRUCIAL information about Voldemort MARKING Harry as his equal!? Jesus jumped up Christ! Did the screenwriter just COMPLETELY ignore the book??
• NEVILLE. Neville Longbottom. Oh, darling. How I wanted him to have his shining moments in the Department of Mysteries (which - where were the freaking mysteries?? A floor that stops you from falling on it? BAH.) I wanted SO BADLY to have him (as in the book) shoulder to shoulder with Harry, fighting with all he's got. "I DOH YOU HABE!" I wanted that. *cries* I wanted the prophesy to tell us more about NEVILLE. Him getting it in the DA meetings and learning how, and everyone congratulating him was awesome.  (I'm mixed on not seeing his sad mother giving him a gum wrapper and him pocketing it.  I don't know that my heart could have taken it....)
  
• OH MY GOD. Where was "SNEAK" I ask you? WHERE THE BLOODY HELL WAS THAT?! Cho. CHO?! And - I hate almost to say this - Cho could have cried more. So we could understand the whole "wet" thing.
• Emma Watson needs to learn how to make a face that is not a) a smirk, b) a scowl or c) wide eyed fear. Also, that her EYEBROWS were not hired to act FOR her. Other than that, she looked very pretty and I wanted to see her and Ron share significant looks and make out. Hee!
• LUCIOUS MALFOY would never EVER try and talk soothingly to Harry to get anything. I'm sorry, I won't budge on this one. He would TAKE THAT prophesy by FORCE. He would sneer, insult, cajole, grab, threaten. Not try and soothe HARRY. Never. (And Harry should NOT have acted like he was BEING soothed by Lucius freaking Malfoy.)
• Oh!! Oh! TO be filed under: NO SERIOUSLY, WHERE THE HELL IS THE TENSION?! category: YOUNG SNAPE. There was NOT enough emphasis on what happened to him to make any SENSE of him shaking with rage and ordering Harry out, and to never come back to lessons. If you didn't understand the book, you would have NO IDEA the importance of what just happened. GAAAAAAH!
• We needed to KNOW that Dumbledore loved Harry.  He told us, but it was like he was mentioning to someone to mind their head as they walk through a doorway.  O_O   I didn't get that Harry was ANGRY throughout this movie.  I mean, hello Potter Mouth and the CAPSLOCK of RAGE, where have you gone?
• WHERE WAS PETUNIA'S HOWLER?  Where was the exposition explaining WHY Harry must live with the Dursleys?  Did JKR in fact wanna kill a bitch after seeing this movie?!
• AND!!  Percy slimy git Weasley!  Why did we not get all of THAT story?  Then he just shows up in a pinstriped suit clutching Harry's shoulder-sleeve?  WHAT.

Things I very much enjoyed:

• Luna Lovegood. I love her. And I love she's an actual hardcore fan (the actress)  SHe was perfectly cast.  Enough dreamy and weirdness mixed in.  And hello, again with the sexual tension with her and Harry.  O_O
  
• Every single moment of Ron on the screen (and there were NOT ENOUGH. Weasley is my KING, y'all.)
• The Twins. Their extendable ears. Ahaha.
• Molly and Arthur looking worn out, but having smiles for their family.
• The Arthur Weasley attack - gah, it freaked me out.
• The wet dreams, I mean... the dreams of the corridor, etc. (Um... SNAKES. Tunnels. Wands. HELLO, PUBERTY. At one point I pantomimed a jerk-off and my husband cracked up - "I was just thinking the same thing." Heh. WERE YOU NOW? Hee!)
• The actual dust up with the Death Eaters, even though I wanted more of the Department of Mysteries.
• The actual battle with Dumbledore and Voldemort, even though I missed the Magical Brethren interceding. I loved the sonic booms because of the strength of their spells. YES. That was v v cool. Also the thing Dumbledore did with the water to encase V? Awesome. (Um, the whole possession thing was weird. I liked it and I didn't. Hmmm.)
• The D.A. meetings.
• The use of the Prophet to further the story along. Also, it was cool visually.
• Belatrix Lestrange. (Oooh, especially her in Azkaban. That was awesome looking.)

ARRRRGH. This screenwriter pissed me off royally, and I have NEVER said that about an HP movie yet. Bah. And humbug. Perhaps I shouldn't have finished the book an hour before going to the movie. All of the wonderful plot was just sitting in my brain, all fresh and happy. :(  People were CLAPPING at the end at my theater.  I just... I just couldn't.

Okay, I have GOT to finish this fic that is due today. JEEEEEZ. *covers self in sackcloth and ashes*

I think not remembering the book in detail helped my enjoyment of the movie. I haven't reread it since the first time, and I was explaining to Lee, my memory of what happened in this book and the next one are jumbled together. If something wasn't there, I just assumed it's in the next book. Also, I go into HP movies with not many expectations since I've never really liked them nearly as much as the books.

Luna was awesome. I dug her. I also dug the Ron/Hermione flirting and the little moments of the threesome connecting. I would have liked to see more Tonks and more of Neville's story, definitely.

HAHAHAHAHA, it's okay! I've been reading this series since Book 2 came out, and I... I kinda love them a whole bunch. I've loved all the movies, too, even if there were minor quibbles. (The shock Ron and Draco have at magic being performed in movie 1 and 2. Um... aren't they from WIZARDING families?) But I've loved them!

This one? I'm just floored.

I mean, for serious, M!! Where was the freaking TENSION? That was an emo Harry, not a CAPSLOCK of RAGE Harry. And my husband and I both were just blown away by how much we thought should have been left in!

Oh, and what with Harry folding his hoodie at the end and picking at lint for like... five minutes? And then he's with Dumbledore who does NOT tell him the prophesy??? BAH.

At my movie theater they actually had a 15-minute *intermission* 70 mins in! I mean, the shortest of all HP movies, and a freaking intermission?! It surely did nothing to keep the narrative flow (such as it was) going.
And word on Mrs. Figg, the abbreviated prophecy, the lack of the locket, and a variety of other things. Who would have thought I would ever respond to a HP movie with a resounding "Meh".

See, I knew I wasn't the only guy that wanted to get some of Dan's bod. Meanwhile, you should totally check out the pics of him in Details magazine. I haven't been able to find them online, and there are only a couple of them, but GUH!!! he looks hot as fuck! in a leather vest with nothing under it.

Speaking of which, what do those boys wear under their robes? And we TOTALLY didn't get enough Malfoy in this movie. Draco should have been MUCH more present than he was.

I can't imagine what someone who had not read the book would have made of it. I deliberately didn't re-read it, and I'm quite glad of it. I agree with most of your points except:
1. What was wrong with the playground? Looked pretty common or garden local playground to me. Dudley's friends scoffing at the wand under the chin, but Dudley knew better worked for me too.
2. WTF are they doing with actors of the calibre of Griffiths and Shaw? Hardly anything to do and performances not so much phoned in as sent in by scroll-in-a-bottle method.
3. Actually I liked Dolores quite a lot. I found her repellently cutesy and chilling at the same time. And the satire on what's happenning to our education system worked very well. Oh, and I adored the cat plates on the wall.
4. Virtually all the other adults were woefully underused and mostly misused too. Again, why bother hiring top actors with enough screen and stage awards under their belts to stock a shop then give them so little to do. Father Weasley was an honourable exception. Otherwise, see above re method of sending in performances.
5. I liked the Blacks's home. It fitted in exactly with my ideas, as it's totally right for that upmarket part of London.
6. At least they kept the phone box. Everything else was rushed dreadfully. And what about the statues at the end?
7. I liked the artistic shout-out to the 30s and Big Brother in te typeface for the decrees, the huge picture of Fudge etc etc.
8. If Kreacher's so important JKR personally insisted he remain, why didn't they actually, like, tell us who he was?
9. OWLS are a big thing. They correspond to GCSEs - JKR is very specific about this and the results are important at the start of the next book. Yet they are disrupted, the kids just run out and forget all about them? No.

1. I just... it seemed like it belonged in a different movie. It just felt choppy to me, artistically. Like, there was an "art for art's sake" tone to it that didn't jive with the Dursley's. (OH, and upon their return home with the apathetic Figg, who was dragging who there? Dudley looked like he had Harry in a choke hold.)
2. YES. Yes yes yes.
3. I liked Dolores, too! I didn't think they gave her ENOUGH to be truly evil in the beginning. I did love her "hem hems" I just wanted more lines - that was a pretty important moment, imo, that was squandered.
4. AGREED.
5. I thought it was in a ramshackle part of London, though. (Is it THAT narrow? The house seemed 6 feet wide!)
6. Yes! I liked that, too. And I wanted the Magical Brethren stepping in front of Harry! Or you know... Harry dueling a bit with Voldemort!
7. I very much liked the Prophet images. Liked that a lot.
8. YES YES!!! I wanted more Kreacher. Like... how he was a PART of Harry's belief that Sirius was indeed there! (Um, did they have that? I'm blanking.)
9. OWLS. And it was just Umbridge administering them! Hogwash. And yes, they weren't FINISHED!!

1. Didn't feel that way to me. I used to live about a dozen streets away from where they film the Dursley house, and it all fitted in very well - strong feel of Bracknell about the whole place. (Though I have no idea WTF every time they fly into London they approach from the east, passing Canary Wharf and HMS Belfast before they get to the centre of Town. Stupid. Don't they exepct anyone in London to see it or notice?) Figg was dreary wasn't she?
3. I rather liked the way Staunton made a little go a long way in terms of lines, especially in the trial scene.
5. DEFINITELY not ramshackle - those sorts of houses are posh, posh, posh - mostly late Georgian, so around 200 years old, and in pretty upmarket areas like the posher bits of Islington, Belgravia or Hampstead. The houses are fairly narrow but go back a long way. (Think about the house in Notting Hill - this is way posher than that , though.) To put it in context, you'd be lucky to get a house of that style for under three million. Pounds, not bucks.
9. As I said, JKR based OWLS specifically on our 16+ exams; they should have had several teachers patrolling thrughout (in gowns as it's Hogwarts.) I have spent far too bloody much time doing just that not to notice how wrong that was.
10. I thought the whole point about McGonagall comforting Trelawney was that she despised her, but in the face of Umbridge showed solidarity? None of that - no sense that the teachers were bewildered and upset at all.

5. No, no, I get that in the movie it's a posh neighborhood. In the BOOK, #12 Grimmauld Place is in a horrible, run down part of town. (Uninhabited)
3. I'm a fan of Imelda Staunton, and thought she did the best with what she was given. My big beef was the editing of the movie and the screenwriter. Second beef is how the director handled certain aspects.

Georgian houses are generally very narrow and long; at the time most were built, King George taxed on the amount of street footage and front windows you had, so most people got around the tax but building their houses with the most minimal amount of street footage they could legally get away with. You can see the same kind of houses in old Philadelphia, too, especially Elphreth's Alley.

-bhahaha. When I first saw it, all I could think of was Dudley busting out with, "Damn it feels good to be a chav."
-I thought Figg was excellent.
-I did very much miss Petunia's Howler; I think it was the missing thing I missed most. Besides maybe more Occulamency.
-I think lots of people think of Grimmauld Place as a mansion, but it is a townhouse, and...that's what townhouses are like.
-Harry did look like a good kisser. It was a sexy kiss. I thought however that it looked the opposite of porny, because when the camera slides up their bodies it shows just how much they're NOT doing anything but touching lips. there's half a foot of space between him and Cho. I think it's cute.
-I didn't think we were going to get the Neville and his mum and the gum wrapper moment, but I really hoped. I love that whole St Mungo's trip. There's Lockhart!
-I dislike the whole Cho being the traitor thing very much. I understand why they did it, and I'm not sure they could've done it any other way--making what's her name a big enough character to have her be the sneak and have Cho defend her and show both their reasoning--that would've taken a lot. But making Cho the sneak paints her as worse than she is. Then making it be a result of Veritaserum makes it Not Her Fault AT ALL, which makes me feel like...they all just turn their back on her for no reason, and that's never gonna get resolved.
-I kinda hate Emma Watson. Acting-wise.
-I have never gotten the sense that (either) Dumbledore of the movies loves Harry.
-the e e cummings of rage does not work for me either. Harry should've yelled more.
-Luna was AWESOME. And she did have so much chemistry with Harry.

Er, sorry for the long comment, I'm just so happy you did a long write up. I do think that reading 1/2 OotP recently made me like the movie less. Objectively I respect what it did--yeah it left a lot of things out, but it had to, because of time constraints. But as such I wasn't able to really get into it or feel it, because it was not the story in my head. So I felt very removed and detached from it. I still can't decide how I really feel about it!

Pshaw, I love long comments from you! And yeah - reading before seeing was a Bad Move on our parts. There were parts I loved, I love the characters, so... I'll see it again. It's just no PoA, which remains my favorite movie adaption.

-I possibly liked Arabella because she reminded me so much of my grandma.
-Grimmauld Place was NOT what I imagined. I imagined it to look very very Tim Burton. Like, I expected it to pop into existence WEDGED between the other houses, all very crooked and slanty and looking like it was SQUEEEEEZED in there. But the inside is actually very much what I imagined. I liked the room with the family tree. Though I was very surprised we didn't get to see Regulus on the tree; that would've been so easy to show and--and R.A.B.!
-But SNEAK on Cho's face would've been even more unfair to her. But I *love* the SNEAK thing. To me it speaks to the questionableness of some of the things the good guys do.
-Molly is teh awesomeness.

I think the thing that leaves me most uncertain is the end. I don't remember the final confrontation in the book, but the part where Harry says, "I feel sorry for you 'cause you ain't got friends"...I don't remember that happening in Book 5 and I *thought* that was going to be a large part of Book 7. I think Harry's going to have to have sympathy for Voldemort, to see the man in him, the Tom Riddle, and even have to...care for that part of Voldemort in order to defeat him. That that was showing up in the 5th movie felt weird. I need to read the end of OotP again; I stopped halfway through because I decided to reread all 7 after I read book 7. Because I am a nutcase.

PoA is definitely the most cinematic. Frankly I think the first 2 movies sucked ass.

Yes yes to Grimmauld Place! It supposedly INFLATED between 11 and 13, not repeated the dopey brick moving of Diagon Alley in Movie 1. I did like the Black Family tree covering the whole of the room, even though it wasn't the "tapestry." Also, R.A.B.!! SERIOUSLY. (Um, please turn to page 116 and tell me if that locket in the Black house is or is not - in your opinion - the missing locket that R.A.B. took in Book6. *bites nails*

And the whole pitying thing was the THEME of Book 6! That's why Dumbledore shows Harry Tom Riddle's life! And Merope, etc.! BAH.

I'm almost done with my second re-read - I have ten more chapters of Book 6, and I hope to time it so I'm done by the time I pick up my Book 7. GAH.

Oh, yeah, definitely agree on the locket. Almost everyone I've ever heard talk about it agree that's the horcrux. Question is, who has it? Did Kreacher give it to Narcissa?

Sympathy with others, beyond that, being able to identify with them and put yourself in their shoes, is what the series is about imo. I love that, because to me that is what's at the HEART of growing up. But I didn't think that theme was made so EXPLICIT at the end of book 5. Am I wrong?

I like the idea of Mundungus having sold the locket when he was lifting all of the other Black memorabilia... And then Harry has to break into Borgin and B___ (can't remember the name) to get it back, or something.

But I'm fairly sure Kreacher has it hidden or given it to Narcissa. Maybe Narcissa is wearing it, but doesn't know what it is, and she'll have to be killed to get it? Or she gives it to Draco, and HIS mother has to die for him? OOOOH.

No, you aren't wrong. That wasn't mentioned AT ALL in Book 5. It was brought up and emphasized in Book 6, so... *hands* But yes, I get the idea, and like it, but come on, Mr. Director! There was plenty that could have been put in there, instead. (Ahem, like Neville's mother. Mothers are a theme, people!)

I FORGOT about Mundungus possibly having the locket. Didn't Harry see it when he caught Mundungus with the Black stuff?

Narcissa is one of the characters I most worried about Not Finding Out What Happens To. She's so minor. And yet even while barely there she plays a big part in book 5, and I love her and Bella's scene in book6 (I hope that makes it to the movie).

Don't be sorry. It was painful, but that can be good. There was lots of insight there.

Everyone else loves it. I was beginning to think something was wrong with me. But if you hated it to (and for many of the same things I did) then I am okey-dokey-artichokey.

And OMG there was SOOOO much *ping!* between Harry and Tonks. And I nearly had to rub one off right there whenever they showed the close-ups of Harry in his bed with the bad dreams all sweaty and thrashing *insert me visualizing any character (but Cho) giving Harry a blowjob here*.

I keep seeing "I loved it!!" posts and I cannot understand why their brains don't work!!!

I'm completely waiting for all the icons of Harry writhing in bed (with a shot of a smug Malfoy or SIrius standing over him.) Ooooh, and he was all *thrust thrust thrust* while riding the thestral, too!

I loved it, but after how much I hated the previous four films (especially "Prisoner of Azkaban"--there are not WORDS for how much I hate that movie) it would've had to do something like have Luna scream out "BRIAN!" as she and Harry did it in the prefects bathroom for me to be disappointed. (Although, actually, if you take out the "BRIAN!" part, I would've totally bought that. This movie makes me 'ship Harry/Luna HARDER THAN EVER.)

A "Harry Potter" book fan should see "Harry Potter" movies with very low expectations. That's my personal policy.

The D.A bits were made of awesome.

And yeah. Totally buy Harry/Everyone Else more than Harry/Cho.

Liked Cho's accent, though. Mostly because I got to feel very smart for correctly surmising that that actress is Scottish, not English.

Incidentally, I've been reading your review over the phone to a friend of mine because it's fucking hilarious. <3's you HARD.

Oooooooh, I love PoA the very best. Oh, well. That whole thing about some of the people some of the time, eh? :)

The actress that plays Cho (Katie...Leung, I believe?) is adorable when she's not on screen trying to emote or mack on my movie boyfriend. :D (YOu didn't catch her Scottish accent in GoF? "Oooh, soorry Harry, but I'd proomised him I'd goo." Heee! She's a cutie. Just... not in the movie.

I think the problem is that "PoA" is my very, very, VERY absolute favoritest "Harry Potter" book ever. I don't even need to read it anymore; I practically know the whole thing. So I really, really wanted the movie to be just like it and it wasn't. My favorite "HP" chars are Ron and Lupin, and that movie was MEAN to Ron and Lupin. MEAN, I TELL YOU!

Katie Leung, yes. :-) I suspected her of being Welsh in "GoF," actually, but it's very evident she's Scottish in this one. More lines, I guess? Yeah, she was precious. Beautiful. But she and DanRad just don't sell the idea of them as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Evanna Lynch totally does, though. HOMG.

Ah, I loved all of your comments. I'm kinda iffy about the house, to me it seemed okay. And seriously, Ron needed much more time. Maybe its mean, but I dislike Emma so much. You're right, her eyebrows are doing most of the work! And Rupert looses Ron's best lines to her for some reason. I do agree on tension, there wasn't any, except for the Harry/Luna at the end. Damn has that ship suddenly set sail. I'm not sure about Sirius/Harry. I mean visually...yeah anything that involves DanRad and Gary Oldman is something I can get behind, even if it is creepy! Because Dan looked good!

I did like the Lucius bit though. I think he would do things all persuasively instead of violently. I think that's why he dislikes Draco, because Draco has no subtlety, at least in the first few books. Neville definitely deserved some more love as well. Have you seen pics of the actor,he's actually pretty good these days too!
Can't wait for the book, and your reviews, I'm sure I will love them. I have to say though, this was definitely my fave movie. Esp because of Harry's Gay uncles, I will ship Remus/Sirius for life!

Haha. If I was a closer reader of HP, I might have said all that stuff. As it was, I was like, "Hmm. The fifth book felt like filler. This movie felt like filler. Guess they did a good job."

Luna was awesome. You're right about tension, lack of.

And I know everyone hates Watson's acting but how evil am I that I ignored it in favor of how cute she it?
