I am grumpy and crabby today like gangbusters. We have had straight-line winds gusting up to 45 mph here for THREE GORRAM days, and it is taking its toll, I have to say. For any newcomers, WIND IS MY ENEMY. Do you know how challenging it is to have a nemesis be something as elusive as wind? You can't fight back! I'm like Superman strapped to a Kryptonite raft, here. *cries* I spent all last night clenched, listening to the howling and stressing about my less-than-one-year-old saplings. One of my turbines blew off the roof yesterday, and I don't know how the hell to put that back on. (The Mr. doesn't get home until tomorrow, and there is a slight chance for rain [I hope I hope! Wait, No! No!] tonight.)

In other words: AUGH. My shoulders are up around my ears, my back is in knots, and I'm hungry. Truly, life hates me today. HATE I tells ya.

But things of the good: I just ordered a laptop so that I can be mobile with my computering, instead of strapped to this desk, because I do not like sitting inside if I can help it. Obviously that doesn't count TODAY since EVIL IS A'FOOT. Or... A'WIND. A'Nimbus? A'jet stream'd? But my laptop is very pretty and will pack a wallop, and the optical mouse has a cool design on it, and that is a break of sunshine through the dark, heat- and hate-filled clouds, woe.

I say all of this, dear flisters, because I need your help. I NEED GOOD FIREFLY FIC. Yes, I finally watched the series (I have not seen Serenity, so no spoilers, please!) and require your recommendations for excellent story-telling in that world. I'll try just about anything except River/Simon, because ew. Not to mention that Summer Glau bugs the shit out of me. (My hope is that her character will actually DO something in the movie. I know, that's the curse of a show being canceled before its prime.) Um, I have a major yen for anything involving Mal. Jayne would be good. As well as Inara. Or Kaylee. Or Simon. (Not Book. Just... it's Ron Glass. He was on 227 with Jackee, for starters. I do a killer Jackee impression, by the way.) River I'm "eh" about. I'm thinking there's a lot of bad fic with her saying random things like there is for Drusilla, you know?

Anyhoodle: fic recs of gen, het, slash, meta variety. My only requirement is that they are GOOD. No, make that the highest quality. I'll make you a smoothie?

I am going to seek out food, aspirin, a muscle relaxer, and close all the blinds so I don't have to see all the damage. :( And I would like my own temp!Ryan to crush aspirin into some pudding for me to cure my "fussy" behavior. Oooh, an Office marathon today! *strokes chin*

PS: Jack Davenport will be on my TV tonight (CBS, 9/10pm) as a swinger. I'm sure the show will suck - hopefully not forever, because JACK! He gets naked on EVERY SHOW HE'S IN! So there's my silver lining to today. Mmmm, The Commodore, aka Steve, aka Miles, aka get in my bedroom.

DId I like it? Well, I'm thinking I wouldn't ask for fic recs if I didn't! :D I plan on seeing Serenity, there's just only so much time in a day, and I can't spend the Lion's Share in a chair, is all.

Uh... you might want to rethink the offer to swap. There are downed trees and power lines all over the city here. It's bad. (And I don't mind the humidity as long as you don't have 100+ degrees along with it!)

“I don’t... I mean, uh, sure. Platonically.“

“Only I wouldn’t touch that turbine right now; I just lubed up the exhaust ports, and that stuff will burn your skin right off once it sets... You sure you’re OK? You’re lookin’ a mite pale.”

If I hadn't just seen a woman actually making out with a fairground ride on TV last night, I'd be laughing my head off. (She also loved the Twin Towers, and a bit of a banister that she called Lou. Oh yes, she was there too - she's Swedish, and one of the other women went to visit her (them being good friends, and other woman now also having a relationship going on with the wall in question. But they're happy to share!).

It was kinda sad though, because they had ended up that way because of various horrible childhood traumas (and objects can't hurt you!). Still freaked me out though. (Woman sitting on fence talking about how she loves it's shape... TMI! *bleaches brain*)

Btw, Firefly is made of awesome and I'm v. pleased you like it! Don't have any recs though, sorry, it's been forever since I read FF fic (and I'm rushed off my feet today).

I have read very little Firefly fic, but I do know that unfitforsociety, the reccing journal of musesfool has tons of Firefly fic tagged and I think she has excellent taste. There's probably a lot that spoil the movie though, so you may want to watch the movie first.

Also? Didn't really like the River character either- though the movie helped that a lot. I am usually not interested in River fic at all (particularly paired with Jayne, which seemed to be a big ship at one point), but I did read a good River/Dawn crossover that I liked. I'm glad to hear the movie helps River be more interesting/likeable. I mean, that character is BUILT to be fascinating, but I can't decide if the writers weren't able to do enough with her, or if it's the weird Pug-face on Summer Glau. (Man, I'm bitchy today. Eh.)

I was going to mention tesla321 but I see someone beat me to it. She's has a great sense of humor, but I think she uses River a lot as a main character so... not sure if it will be to your taste. I didn't actually read her Firefly stories (I read her BtVS stuff) so I can't tell you in more detail. I *do* love the Firefly series just didn't feel the urge to seek out fic.

Also with you on Firefly. I wish deeply it had at least had a chance to fulfill its potential (do watch Serenity - a real glimpse of how the series might have gone. But just not as meaty as I think the TV series would have been). Other Jossverse series are potential tragedies, at least for Buffy or Angel, but this whole 'verse is a tragedy, and it feels more adult. It's so complete too, in thinking through the politics, the planets etc. And the gorram language is catching, as you've doubtless spotted. Herself_nyc has a couple of BtVS/Firefly crossovers you can now fully enjoy, btw. Makd does Firefly among all her other amazing recs.

Good luck with the laptop. I love mine, but they betray me about 18-monthly by dying horribly out of the blue. Backup is your friend.

I haven't read much Firefly fic, but wesleysgirl has a great crossover fic of Angel and Spike on Serenity. Unfortunately it's a WIP, so still unfinished. But she does update it every now and then.

I have recs! I have lots of recs! I've spent two months compiling a list of my top 100 favorite fics ever, so LOTS AND LOTS OF RECS. I'm pretty sure they're pre-movie, but I dun quite remember. :-/ I'm sure the headers will say, though.

Water in One Hand (http://ana-grrl.livejournal.com/80587.html) by ana_grrl. Mal/Simon, longish and INCREDIBLY sad. I cried.

Teach Me To Hear The Mermaids Singing (http://www.unfitforsociety.net/musesfool/mermaidssinging.htm) by Victoria P. Mal/River, which is NOT--I repeat, not--a pairing I ever thought I'd like at all, but it's done so, so, SO incredibly well here that they're almost my OTP. This one, I definitely remember as being post-Big Damn Movie, though, so save it for later!

With Their Eyelids Shut (http://moodfic.livejournal.com/82178.html) by voleuse. A short, but sweet, Wash/Zoe. Explores their relationship leading up to their wedding night in a series of tiny vignettes.

Divergence (http://unitb.slashcity.net/andromeda/divergence.html) by Ana. AU vignettes for each character, if they'd chosen different paths (or had different outcomes) than the ones they did in the series. Kind of depressing, and it has its ups and downs, but the Wash vignette is an absolute MUST-READ.

Lex Talionis (http://ljconstantine.com/fanfic/lextalionis.htm) by Tara O'Shea. This one is a long piece that alternately makes me smile and sob. It's one of the most frequently recced stories in the fandom, and for good reason. Great characterization, a good solid storyline and a lot of stuff that'll tug at your heartstrings. Warning, though: deals with rape. Realistically, but...painfully.

Never Home (http://community.livejournal.com/ff_friday/27172.html) by igeria. This is a really odd look at a potential backstory for Inara, but the way the device is used to examine the interpersonal relationships and general characterizations of everybody on Serenity makes it amazing. Inara's thoughts on Mal here make me smile and make me sad. My only real complaint with it is that I wish it was about ten times longer.

The Living (http://www.livejournal.com/users/inlovewithnight/145165.html) by inlovewithnight. This was the very, very first "Firefly" fic I ever read. It's mostly gen, with referneces to possible Mal/Jayne and a sort of implied Jayne/River, but...not really. It's hard to explain. It's just dark as hell and really good.

The rest of my faves have Simon/River or just River, so I'll just leave 'em out for now. :-) Though quick note, while you're looking through all these recs people are leaving you: if you happen to come upon this one Mal/Kaylee where Mal finds Kaylee crying on Serenity on her first day because no one remembered to assign her a room, and she was too scared to ask, for the love of God, POST THE LINK. I loved that one and I've been looking for it for AGES.

Oh, and a quick self-pimp: I've written "Firefly" twice. Both times were post-"Serenity," though, and, me being me, I don't think they're very good, but if you wanna look at 'em after you've seen the movie, they're under my "firefly" tag on my LJ.
