It's already Wednesday; this pleases me.
Sep. 3rd, 2008 10:11 amMy son is now on the cross-country team, which means he leaves for school at 6:10, and I have to be coherent enough to drive him. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet, as this means I'm falling asleep by 9:30 like an old lady, which I am not. *cries indignantly* However, this does mean that he is worn out by late afternoon, has a massive appetite for dinner, and sleeps like the dead. For those of you with ADHD kids, you can appreciate my utter elation over this new development.
There is a tin of smoked almonds looking at me, challenging me to a duel. i don't know who will win today. I did, however, run for an hour at the gym, plus did a kazillion pull ups and dips, so maybe it's a draw. (Oooh, and there was a totally hot older man with salt and pepper hair next to me on, like, every machine, and it was very motivational to not quit early.
Some times it is SO HARD to not sing out loud with my mp3 player while exercising in public. Songs I almost busted out with today:
* Enter the Sandman
* You Know My Name is Rock! (damn, that's a good running song)
* Roxanne, Roxanne
* I Like Big Butts <-- this one almost makes me start to pop-lock, too, which... that's not conducive to treadmill activity. Or being a white woman in her 30s.
Okay, I ate six almonds and I'm putting them up in the cupboardand then I'll get them out again when I'm sure no one is looking. Oh, party foods, why do I love you so? Oooh, speaking of, I got a recipe for a buffalo shrimp dip that looks pretty damn good. That scooped up with celery? YES, PLEASE. The hotter the better. If you have a favorite party food, hit me up with the recipe - entertaining season is upon me.
In conclusion, my icon is freaking hot. Why is that man so damn perfect? (I don't know if it's his surliness or his food-gasms that win me over, I really don't.) And happy birthday to
aimeelicious! I hope it's a good one!

Date: 2008-09-03 03:39 pm (UTC)Starting tomorrow, Zachary has to get out of bed at 5:30 since he has to be on the bus by 6:30. He has spent his summer sleeoing until past 3 PM. I kid you not. Tomorrow there will screaming at the old homestead. (and you cannot drap him out of bed during the summer. we go in there every 15 minutes in an attempt to get his ass out of bed.)

Date: 2008-09-03 03:44 pm (UTC)This week, since he's been on the team, he's collapsing dead to the world by 9 or 9:30. I am willing to get up early for that, let me tell you. Whooo, is that kid a trial.
I'm looking forward to high school because they don't have to be at school until 9. Since teens sleep later, it makes sense to have school start late, imo.

Date: 2008-09-03 04:15 pm (UTC)They've only had this system in place for three years now, and so far it's working for us. At first I thought it was crazy, but now i get a little more time with each kid in the morning, so I like that.

Date: 2008-09-03 04:12 pm (UTC)Ooh, they have excellent coffee! You should make a 5 dollar bill corsage so everyone can staple money to it! (That's what they do down south for office birthdays. it's AWESOME.) Really clever people make them all fancy and origami flowers.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Date: 2008-09-03 04:04 pm (UTC)I prefer to work out at home, because I have to sing along w/my exercise music, and the local gyms do not appear to be hotbeds of punk-loving individuals.

Date: 2008-09-03 04:13 pm (UTC)HEEEEEE. I allow myself to mouth along at the gym, but when I get home for situps and stretching out (I just can't bring myself to do that in public) I belt it out there. :D

Date: 2008-09-03 04:43 pm (UTC)I often puzzle over the fact that it seems like I eat far more on the days I work out...I'm never quite sure whether I come out ahead in the calorie wars by exercising. Is it better to exercise and eat more or not exercise and eat less? It's like a Zen riddle without one true answer.

Date: 2008-09-03 07:38 pm (UTC)I def. eat more often, but I'm trying to make those portions smaller. I need quicker doses of fuel. But yeah - I'm not a food journal type. i eat when I eat and I eat what I eat. If it means longer on the treadmill, then it's just like that movie in the 80s:
"you do coke so you can work more, so you can make more money, so you can buy more coke, so you can work more, so...." :D

Date: 2008-09-03 04:46 pm (UTC)What pleases me is that I planted Autumn Bliss raspberries in March of 2007 (or maybe April?) and I've got a nice little bowl of giant fragrant raspberries for lunch dessert every day right now. There are few greater luxuries.
Julia, I keep my almonds in the freezer for reasons of preventing bingeing, myself

Date: 2008-09-03 07:36 pm (UTC)I'd put the almonds in the freezer, but the pecans are taking up all the room. :( (Ha ha. No surprise that a nut loves nuts)

Date: 2008-09-03 05:17 pm (UTC)I just dusted the tail end of our Chex Party Mix (classic recipe) leftover from our last party. Their siren song was too strong for me. At least I waited until after exercising, hoping to metabolize the deliciousness before it adhered directly to my thighs.
Anthony Bourdain is a great combination cynical, smart and hilarious. Plus he drinks like a fish and loves all things food. I'd totally love to hang out with him.

Date: 2008-09-03 07:35 pm (UTC)Mmmm, Chex party mix. I quite enjoy that. And cheese straws. And biscuits. And those dippy bread thingies... biscotti!
Uh, I like food. all kinds. :D Anthony Bourdain: greatest man, or greatest man EVER?

Date: 2008-09-03 05:44 pm (UTC)Good for the cross-country kid! That sounds totally up his alley -- long-distance especially rewards really focused, intent personalities. Yay!

Date: 2008-09-03 07:33 pm (UTC)So far, so good. He seems really pleased, and his coach was... surprised at his speed. (Maybe I should take him off his meds so they can REALLY see his energy levels? hahaha.)

Date: 2008-09-03 07:38 pm (UTC)Okay, no more almonds. Can I instead interest you in a chocolate raspberry almond streusel bar?

Date: 2008-09-03 07:40 pm (UTC)Oooh, YES YOU CAN. (Recipe?) See, it's something new to eat, so I get to wipe my slate clean. Or something... ;) I just got back from the happiest place on earth (Ikea) and brought home some sugar cookies with hazlenut filling. O_O
Let's see how long those packages stay unopened...
ADHD, exercise and green therapy
Date: 2008-09-03 06:30 pm (UTC)Have you heard of green therapy? Our behaviour therapist is a big proponent--it basically means spending as much time in a natural setting as possible. It's a stimulating environment, but not too stimulating like being around tons of civilized people can be. Over the summer, my guy biked between 5 and 10 miles a day on one of the rail trails in our area. It seemed to really help him stabilize for some reason. I don't know all the theory behind it, but if it works, sign me up!
And YAY! back to school week.

Date: 2008-09-04 02:05 am (UTC)If people would just put the dinner mints at the beginning of the buffet table, I'd be getting out of line so much earlier. 'cause really, I just want a handful of mints and a coke.

Date: 2008-09-04 11:37 am (UTC)And Buffalo = Buffalo, NY's famous hot sauce. Anything called "Buffalo" (chicken, shrimp, etc.) means it has a spicy sauce on it. It's DELICIOUS.
