1. I have an audition today, I'm sure I won't get it, but I'm finding them to be fun to go on, so eh. (I'm going to follow up every audition with "Do you need this to be more Spader?" And do my James Spader from "Pretty in Pink" impression. I don't know WHY I'm not getting these commercials... Ahaha. Ha. Hem.)
2. I got an email from the director of my second movie that said he mentioned my name to another director to star in a his new movie. UM, OKAY. YES, PLEASE.
3. My husband's been gone all weekend, swapping out the kids on an extended camp weekend, and has decided to keep that up until Wed. night. I love having my bed all to myself, it must be said.
4. Someone has apparently WRITTEN THEIR MASTER THESIS ON MORMONISM IN TWILIGHT. (pdf) So, please. All haters to the left, because I clearly knew what I was talking about, hahaha. [/vindication] I've only skimmed it, I've not read it. But believe me, I will be later.
5. A movie that I think every person who is into vampires/ can handle gore/ can handle a brutal look at adolescent behavior needs to see is Let The Right One In. It's Swedish, and it's absolutely phenomenal.

Okay, so this is a hard one to watch in some ways. The bullying the protag goes through is pretty raw and real. He's 12 and completely isolated. His father is an out of sight out of mind parent, his mother we never get a clear indication of, and the landscape is cold, barren and lifeless. It's slow to start, but I enjoyed looking at it, and the set up felt very natural. A girl moves in next door and there are brutal murders happening all around. [allows you to put 2 and 2 together]

I found the actors absolutely fantastic. Completely natural, and that's not easy for young actors. The bully was absolutely menacing and he's 12! So cherubic, and so plausible. His cronies are clearly afraid of retaliation, and their performances are outstanding as well. But the real light shines from the two kids. I don't know where they found the girl, but she is riveting. The constant hunger and need is almost breath taking. (Again, she's 12. Dude. Applause.)

There is one particular death scene that is quite brutal and made me cringe, and I'm not the cringing type. (Jess? There's gore. This one might not be for you, or have TFMN with you to give pillow over face warning.) The absolute desperation for connection to anything human is just so heartbreaking and wonderful. One of the final scenes had me absolutely riveted in my chair. I'll just say this: pool. When you see that, let me know what you think.)

In a nutshell, I think this may be THE best movie about vampires I may have ever seen. (Aside from my own, of course. Hahaha. [/self-pimp whore] It's certainly one of the best movies about adolescence I've ever seen. Swedish with subtitles. RUN to see it, if you can handle the horror aspect.

6. I made pumpkin spice cupcakes yesterday with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. I have found my Thanksgiving dessert! (I stole the idea from a Food TV show - I'll make fancy flower caramel cutouts to decorate the frosting on the actual turkey day.)

I love vacation weeks. *beams*

My experiment batch was a pre-made mix that I added ingredients to. (Extra cinnamon and cloves and a 1/2 C of my homemade pumpkin butter) and then I made the frosting with half a container of Neufchatel cream cheese and enough powdered sugar to loosen it up (and sweeten) then several dashes of cinnamon.

I'll make the cupcakes from scratch on Wed. and post the recipe. :D

YES I WANT A DIPLOMA THAT SPARKLES PLS.

As a Swede, I'm really glad to see that so many people are giving Let The Right One In the recognition it deserves. Great movie, although - pretentious snobbishness alert - the novel on which it's based is even better. Social realism plus horror, yeah baby.

And good luck on the audition!

I've heard the novel is outstanding. I'll have to pick that one up, for sure. I'm a big fan of some of the things I've seen out of Sweden. I loved the movie. And ABBA. ;)

Thank you very much!

I saw a 'at the movies' type movie review show last night on the fly and they were talking about that movie. I wish it would come here! But alas, it will not. I might have to find a copy of the book to sate my curiosity.

They said that someone is already working on an American version. What you wanna bet it will *suck* and/or totally miss the point?

*sigh*

And i second the recipe for these cupcakes. They sound *way* too yummy to miss.

I believe you can dl the movie at Apple or somesuch for a small fee. Plus, it's coming out on DVD soon, so there's that. I most likely will NOT see the US version. I can't imagine that could go where this one did, Hollywood and all. It's raw.

I posted a comment up there with how I made them, but the official recipe I'll put up on Wednesday. These were my experiment cupcakes. :D

I'm planning to see Let the Right One In tomorrow, then walking down to a local brewpub to wait for the husband to get off work. He hates skeery movies (chicken!).

Fancy flower caramel cutouts? Do you make the caramel and use those itty bitty canape cutters?

From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
It has some pretty tense moments in it, and there are scenes of gore. That aside, it's a fan-freaking-tastic movie, and I can't recommend it enough.

Yes! I get the caramel to room temp, roll them out, and cut out leetle teensy flowers. Pretty! And yum, too.

I saw a review of Let the Right One In that made me want to see it, and now you're making me *yearn* to see it! Will definitely put the DVD on my Netflix queue, since I doubt it will make it to our local cineplex. Also, I handle scary movies much better in my own living room. You'll remember how well I do (as in, NOT AT ALL) in the theater! :-)

Oh, you must see it, Anne, honestly. I just loved it. (If you can't find it, let me know.) Watching it with Ron is a good idea, plus, it's usually apparent when something you (in particular) won't want to see is about to happen.

And thank you!!

Okay, my favorite line from that thesis is definitely:
The decision to join either the Mormon Church or an eternity as a vampire is not to be taken lightly.

Apparently, if one uses that thesis as a litmus test of LDS literacy, I kin reed. The only think they mention I wasn't familiar with is the idea that one's blood gets totally cycled out when you convert.

Go audition! Break a leg. ;)

The director mentioning you is AWWWESOME! I hope something comes of it, but it seems like a fantastic sign by itself!

Mmmm, the cupcakes sounds faaaabulous. Cinnamon cream cheese frosting needs to exist in my world from now on.

Man, I need to dl'd that to my Kindle and go read it - that's just what I was saying, except they're doing it in an educated manner! :D

The last of the cupcakes have been devoured and the unanimous suggestion was MOAR FROSTINGS. Num.

Yours is more fun to read. I kept wondering if I was being unfair to be so unimpressed by the quality of writing in a Master's thesis or if it's supposed to be like that.

Still unsure.

is it stinky of me to say that I was thinking the same thing? Ahahaha, one of the reasons I set out to write the book I'm writing is because every single ex-Mormon book out there is SO DRY. I mean, Escaped by Carolyn Jessop could have been AMAZING. But it's told in the same way that every single church service I attended is delivered.

*snoooooze*

There was an article in City Weekly this summer (I wanna say June or July?) about a woman who had grown up in a polygamist household and been sexually abused by her father, then gone on to stripping. It was actually pretty riveting, but that is a shocking exception to the rule!

Also, it was an article in City Weekly, so. Much shorter, for one thing.

What I find weird about that is that every single ex-Mormon I know is so far from dry! Very interesting, fun people, at least the ones I hang out with.

Haven't re-read it to see if it was actually as interesting as I recall, but I found the article:
Stripped Bare: As FLDS children in Texas begin returning to their parents, ex-sect member Kathleen Mackert asks what future awaits polygamy’s children (http://www.slweekly.com/index.cfm?do=article.details&id=5440A126-14D1-13A2-9FA3A5ECC3D0A4B9)

Can I just say, watching the FLDS arrests this summer from Utah was really odd.

*laugh* I did read the whole thing, but I also had NOTHING to do today. I've given myself till after the holiday to get serious about job hunting, so after I finished that AMAZINGLY badly written thesis (also, isn't a thesis supposed to have a RECOGNIZABLE MESSAGE???), I started reading Fandom_Wank about Twilight.

I feel as though I am doing something TERRIBLY WRONG with my life.

Wow... :-D I am so happy you liked that one! One of the best swedish movies done in a looong time. And your right. The young actresses are AMAZING! And if you think the movie was gory? Wait till you have read the book... It is is quite disgusting in parts, in the midst of social realism... I could not recommend a book more. Seriously.

I want to see that film -- I will steel myself for gore! If the gore isn't, er, relentless, I think I will be okay. It sounds like one terrible scene, but good movie! I will give it a go.

Just, Swedish horror movie. That feels like a weird phrase to type.

No, the gore is def. not relentless and you have warning, so you'll be okay, I think. It's such a quietly beautiful and painful film, I'd hate for you to miss it because of those few scenes.

They were so grood!! It was the cinnamon cream cheese frosting that made them so good. Next time I need to triple the frosting! *prepares the fwoomp tube for you*

I went to that graduate school. And yes, they will let you write your Masters paper on ANYTHING in Library Science.

Date: 2008-11-25 01:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nc-bookworm.livejournal.com
Also, quick nitpick, it isn't a Masters "thesis." It is a Masters "paper." There is some sort of difference, the biggest being that you don't have to defend it. All you have to do if get your adviser to read it and pass you.

From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
See, I'm from the world of science, so it's hard for me to switch over to the literary world. It seems crazy to me to not have to defend your cockamamie theories on why squash bugs are affected by .02% increases in nitrogen as well as Mormons and vampires in SMeyer's head. ;)

From: [identity profile] nc-bookworm.livejournal.com
Heee! Yeah, it is weird. And the degree is a Master of Science too! The Masters paper for that program is a joke. It is a requirement of the graduate school, not the program. I actually did honest-to-goodness research and data gathering for mine. I wish I had known that I could have just BS-ed about vampires for 40 pages!

Your description of "Let the Right One In," has thoroughly convinced me to go watch it! I've always had a thing for vampires (I don't know why, but I do know that it started with Angel, when he was still with Buffy...oh, those two were so beautiful!), so I'm sure that I'll enjoy it. And strong acting is always a plus :)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the film recommendation! I came across your journal somehow...I think I followed links about "Twilight" sucking and the Mormon tone of the books...

Anyway, thanks again :)

Feel free to drop in any time - I enjoy talking with new folks! Hope you like the movie.
