I had my routine check up with my GP [general practitioner] today, and I continue to like him a lot. [Side note: I am capable of learning from other's mistakes and brought my Kindle. Good thing, too, as I had an hour wait due to flu season.] I have no real health complaints, I'm fit and hale, my BP is textbook, yadda yadda, and as we're wrapping things up, he asks, "Anything bugging you that you forgot about?"

"You know, I've only been able to breathe out of one side of my nose since I was a kid. I always thought that was normal. ...it's not, is it?"

"Uh, no." [shines light up my schnoz makes note] "Yeah, you have a deviated septum, pretty severe, actually. Wanna have surgery?"

"Yeah - I mean, should I?"

"Is it affecting your quality of life?"

I thought for a second, then went in for a penny and a pound. "I have a hard time making out with the Mister because I can't breathe out of one side - my kissing side."

He laughed and asked if that was important enough for surgery. !!!!

"Doc. Make outs are totally a quality of life issue."

He scheduled a CT and an appointment with an ENT to get this checked out. HEE. Who on earth could doubt the importance of make outs?!? Before I get "concerned comments about being heedless/slap-dash with surgery, I have issues breathing, always have, and hey! Let's fix that if we can, yes? And the bonus is the new Euro-Extended Make Out Stoney Remix! \o/

ION: I found last night's ep of Big Love to be incredibly disturbing. I also am 100% convinced that Gennifer what's her butt [Margene] is a one-note actress and she's getting on my last damn nerve. The dancing? Good lord.

I had to take my daughter in this morning for an appointment. This being the cold and flu season, I found the "appointment" concept to be more of a vague notion than an actual expectation that we could be seen around that time. Don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier that first thing on a Monday, all the miserable people would be in with urgent issues that weren't quite urgent enough to involve an emergency room visit over the week-end. D'oh!

I love those "one last thing" conversations with my doctor. It always seems that those are the ones that turn up the real issues. Too bad we can't have "so, how are you doing?" kind of appointments with our doctors as a regular part of health care.

Hope things work out for you and the septum. That sounds like a pretty miserable condition, actually.

Oh, I didn't even think of that, either re: Monday/sickos.

And yeah - there should be a bi-yearly, "Say, Doc, what do you make of this..." type appointments.

It's been bad when I'm trying to really work out hard, like full out running. Must be why I've been a sprinter since junior high?

There was a question about whether that is quality-of-life??? ;)

I'm glad you're getting that looked at and hopefully fixed. Deviated septums are just no good.

I keep wishing there was a good way to ask a doctor about those "...er, is it SUPPOSED to work this way?" questions, especially when one isn't having physicals and doesn't have insurance. SIGH.

I'm looking forward to operating at 100%, that's for sure!

Oy, the lack of insurance. My sister is without insurance and I just worry about her all the time. I'm trying to build up enough of a relationship with my GP to get him to bend the rules and sneak her in on my insurance. I grew up without insurance, so now that I'm covered, I'm all about using it.

Nah-nah nanananah-nah nanananah-nah nananah!

Hey, extended euro remix. You can't say that to a European and not have him pull a glowstick out. (secret: all EU citizens carry glowsticks on their persons 24 hours a day)

But in all seriousness, it is weird when something you had all your life turns out to be medical issues. Cue story about my crooked fang and an inflammation of the lip that required surgery.

I'm glad to know that should I ever go undercover as a European I will require glowsticks on my person. And black head-to-toe, clearly.

WHOA! Good thing you had that looked into, as well! Infections can be naaaaasty.

My husband had the surgery to correct his deviated septum. The recovery was less than pretty (and if you have questions, I'll try to remember what happened) but things are better for him now. He still has stuffier-than-average symptoms, but it's improved!

Deviated septum sounds super dirty, like you are some special kind of sexual deviant they don't yet have a specialized porny website for yet.

Oh, dude, you will be unstoppable when you can breathe free from both your nostrils! Making out, walking and running, getting enough oxygen to all of you! \o/

Make-outs are like chocolate. Totally essential to quality of life.

I've known a couple of people who had that surgery. It wasn't fun for them. OTOH, my dad got to send one of the guys from work who had that surgery a basket of pansies with the note, "Get well, ya pansy."

Getting surgery to breathe - when will the narcisism stop?

It must have been romantic though, every time you're husband would kiss you you'd be swooning all over the place in a romantic faint. Of course you'd be blue and twitching, but still, very romantic.

WOO HOO NOSE JOB!! ;) Seriously though, glad the doctor could figure that out and you're getting it taken care of. Enjoy those make outs, my dear!

Big Love was so disturbing. It was crawled under my skin, could barely pay attention to Flight of the Conchords, I dreamed about churches and hymns all last night disturbing. I actually liked Ginnifer Goodwin the first two seasons but I have to agree with you now. In trying to give Margene's character depth they're really showing her limitations as an actress. On the flip side I think Chloe Sevigny should be handed every acting award there is.

wow.

the issue that i have here is that you are around my age (i will be 32 on thursday) and some JUST NOW REALIZED YOU HAD A PROBLEM!!!

this is what seriously pisses me off about our medical industry. take me for example - i had displaysia of the right hip. i was BORN with it. it has been there my entire life, and i have NEVER not been in pain. and..

and all it freaking too was a doctor to take a damned x-ray and LOOK AT MY HIP.

i had been told my ENTIRE life that i was a hypochondriac, i was making it up, i didn't really hurt. if someone had listened to me when i was a kid, they could have fixed it THEN, a LOT more easily, and i could have had something closer to a normal childhood.

if an doctor, ever, had just LOOKED, they would have known you had a deviated spetum and fixed it forever ago and you would have been able to have MARATHON make out sessions!

(sorry for the rant. but this totally always pisses me off.)

i am so happy that you have a doctor who listens to you and is willing to treat you. i wish many MANY marathon make-out sessions, with chocolate flavored tequila!

okay, okay, calm down. Doctors aren't mind readers, so it would have been helpful if I had said something earlier. You'll notice that the point of this is that I didn't bring it up to my doctors throughout, you know, my whole life.

I also have a long history of not ever going to the doctor, so again. You know. It's all good.

Even though I never really had any upper GI problems, after the first gall bladder attack, I was all ready to change it from a near vestigial organ to a full up one. I say if there's no serious risk, go for it. Making out, so quality of life.

Last night's episode was incredibly disturbing. They've done episodes before where we see similar issues from different points of view, but never so many and I think it was the entire female cast. I think the theme might have been

What is family to you, how has it fucked you up, and what screwed up shit would you do to hang onto it?

Every time I think the show is falling into being a "typical soap opera" it does something like this. This might have been the most powerful episode of the series.
