For those that didn't see my Sat. post, I started up a new workout program called P90X. I'll keep all that stuff under a cut so you don't have spam on your flists.

Okay, yesterday was Day 2 of P90X. "Plyometrics" was the workout, which basically means "hey remember how you had knee surgery last year? You're gonna have it again, I bet." I think there were 15 different kinds of squats we did. There may have been more, but the world went grey after a bit. :) The work out was only 58 minutes long, but that was a long ass 58 minutes. I've never sweated from my KNEES before. I had to hit pause at one point because my heart rate was getting a little too high and I bent over to grab my knees and breathe and my hands slid off. What?! A) gross and B) that's some workout if your freaking patellas are getting misty.

\o/

Here's a list of some of the squats we did (I can't remember all of them, but I think this is most of them.) This is not in order of how we did them, just how I remember them. We started off with some jogging in place, high knee marching, bouncing from side to side, and walking squats. Funny, he didn't consider those walking squats more than a warm up. Two steps forward, pivot, two back, pivot, one minute.

  • Heisman See this? You hop side to side on each leg and freeze in that pose for a breath. 30 seconds.

  • Leapfrog squats squat down, toes pointing out, knees tracking over toes. Get low. using your pelvis, hop forward twice, then hop back twice, hands out like you're going to catch a ball. 30 seconds

  • Running 180 squats Ever see people start off on cross country? You squat down, one leg out front, the other in back, hands up at the ready. Now jump up, turn around, and have the other leg in the lead position. Jump up and repeat for original lead leg. 30 seconds.

  • Mary something squats Okay, these were my faves. Get in Warrior 1 position but your back foot is flat, not on your toes. Leap and switch legs. (Look at something straight ahead to help you balance.) 30 seconds.

  • Circle run Sounds easy, but it's not. Put a book or towel on the floor. (I have big tiles in my bathroom, so I just used one of them.) Run around it, still facing forward. IOW, your feet are moving around it, but your torso/head are stationary. Switch directions ever 20 seconds, do for 1 minute.

  • Double Heisman Pretend there are two tires in between your left and right final poses. You hop on your feet twice, then freeze in the pose. (boom boom pose, boom boom pose) Another one I loved. 30 seconds.

  • Hot foot Stand on one foot, hop in a cross pattern. 1 minute, 30 seconds each foot.

  • Gap Leap LOVE THIS. Pretend you're leaping across a stream. I again used my tile as a guide and leaped 3 feet each time. Use your arms to help "get you over" and try to land as softly as possible on your toes, NOT your whole foot. 30 seconds.

  • Monster Truck Tires 4 giant tires laid out left right left right in a row. (Make sense? Like you're hopping through them and they're stretched out in front of you?) Giant leaps into each, landing on your toes, then repeat going backwards. 30 seconds.

  • Jump shot squat Squat down to "catch a pass" then leap up and shoot. 30 seconds for each lead foot. (You lead with your left foot and do the motion, then you lead with your right foot.)

  • Catch and Pitch Ahahaha, I totally borked this one, could NOT get the other side. Squat down to catch the ball (both hands up just like a catcher) Step with your left foot and throw. Squat down and step back to repeat. 30 seconds. THEN (and here's where I gave up and marched in place) repeat with your right foot. Which means you're pitching with the other side. And my body couldn't figure it out. :D 30 seconds on this side, or drink water and laugh, like I did.

  • Stiff march no impact, but don't let that fool you into thinking it was easy. Left foot out straight (knees locked) right arm stiff and straight up, left arm back. Switch to other leg, and swing arms appropriately. Arms must be stiff and locked, pointing up arm has to be straight up, leg has to be straight out, foot flexed. Not so easy, especially when it's for 1 minute.

This is only what I remember. I know there were a few more in there, too. I had to towel off my face and arms every few minutes. Jesus please us, this is a tough work out. Oh! I just remembered one, he called it the "mother of all the exercises," and he wasn't lying.

  • jump squats Hold your hands out like they're on a table, elbows bent at 90 degrees. Jump up in the air and smack your hands with your knees. I KNOW. Don't cheat and drop your hands down to your knees, either. 30 seconds.

Now, keep in mind that we did all of these exercises, then we DID THEM AGAIN. All of them. Oh, and one of the demo guys doing the workout? He had a prosthetic leg. A ONE LEGGED MAN DID THESE. Anytime I said to myself "That's impossible," I looked at the dude with ONE LEG doing jumping squats, etc. I MEAN WHAT?! No excuses!!

Today is Chest and Arms and AB-Blow Out. It's going to have to wait until lunch time because I have an audition this morning and I don't want to hobble in, har.

There are some awesome recipes in the program, and everything is reasonable, minus the one million egg whites every morning. I need to look into buying just egg whites (the things n a carton?) because I can't stomach the waste of all of those yolks. Can you freeze yolks? GOT IT, thanks! I have custards and things I could make with them at a later date, I suppose, but I have no idea. Recipes under the cut!

Mushroom Omlete

6 egg whites
3/4 C mushrooms, sliced
2 TBSP green onion, chopped
1/2 Roma tomato, chopped
1 1/2 oz. low fat cheddar cheese, shredded

Beat egg whites in a bowl, season with salt and pepper, easy on the salt. Coat a non-stick pan with cooking spray, add veggies and cook until tender. (I think I'd skip this step. I like a bite to my veggies.) Pour egg whites over all and cook until set on the bottom. Add cheese, fold over in half and cook just until cheese melts and the egg sets.

191 calories, 3 g fat, 32 g. protein, 7 g carbs. The recipe changes as you move through the program by adding more egg whites and a little more cheese. (3 ounces.)

Spinach Scramble

1/2 Roma tomato, diced
1 C spinach leaves, cleaned and dried
6 egg whites
1 1/2 oz. feta cheese, crumbled
1 TBSP fresh basil, chopped.

In a non-stick pan coated with cooking spray, saute tomatoes and spinach until slightly tender. Remove, and set aside. Whisk egg whites together, add to pan and stir over low heat until almost set. Add veggies back, the cheese and basil. Cook to desired firmness. (I had this today. Num and easy and num.)

239 calories, 9 g fat, 29 g. protein, 9 g. carbs

Chicken Scramble

6 egg whites (see?)
3 oz. chicken breast, cooked and diced
1 1/2 oz. fat-free Parmesan cheese, grated
1/2 TBSP fresh basil, chopped

Coat non-stick with cooking spray, lightly beat eggs, add to pan. Cook, stirring, until half-way set. Add diced chicken and cook through. Add a small amount of salt and some pepper to taste, garnish with fresh basil.

320 calories, 6 g. fat, 49 g. protein, 16 g. carbs

It's not all regimented crap in Case de Stoney, however. Yesterday I drove out to meet [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue and hold her leetle baby boy for a few hours while they were in my neck of the woods. Now, I'm the first person that will tell you that I don't like everyone's kids. I'm not that mom. Just because it's a baby doesn't mean I have to like it. :D

I kinda had a hard time letting anyone else hold Jonah. Um, he's totally cute and nommable and he let me zrbit his neck. We also discovered that my package of pink-skull adorned tissue pack was the perfect toy for a teething vunderkind. Who knew? It's always the weirdest things that keep kids entertained. Two hours of adults in a restaurant and he was pleased as punch the whole time. You couldn't ask for a better baby, you know? <3 <3

It is stormy stormy story here today. If I didn't have to leave the house, I would be pleased to sit inside and let it howl, but I have to get out in it, bah. No, no stinking thinking! YAY RAIN. Or something. ;)

yes. You can freeze egg yolks. I feel the same way, I HATE to waste all those yolks.

I've just been given a tip (particular brand) on egg whites only in the dairy case. WOOT! If I need to use whole eggs, though, I now know I can freeze them, yay!

Eggs and their component parts can totally be frozen.

separate them from the whites and you can keep them in a container in the freezer. I put mine in a sandwich back (bad me, using plastic). I keep all the frozen yolks in the same container, though.

For yolks, I usually do them one by one, or sometimes two. Not too many in one container, because then it's just a pain in the ass. I suppose you could freeze them individually and then add them to a larger container.

I wouldn't do it as one huge mass because freezing things more than once is never a good idea. But 2-3 is usually how much are in a cake.

Mmm, sounds like good stuff. My doc wants me to increase my protein and decrease my carbs, so I'm looking for stuff that sounds good to eat. Will add the first two, but I cannot eat chicken in the morning. It does not seem like a breakfast food to me :/

You say zrbit too! Mr. Maren and I argue about that all of the time. He insists that I'm crazy and that everyone else in the world calls it a raspberry. We also argue over whether you "thump" someone or "flick" them.

Good luck on audition.

but if the chicken is all mixed in, and you put in salsa, you can pretend they're migas!

ZRBIT. We are awesome, also, we grew up watching the Cosby Show. (That's what Heathcliff Huxtable called them) Thump is one thing-like a fist on the head. Flick is like getting something sticky off your finger, but hitting a forehead or nose. :D

Thanks! I think it went pretty well... <3

I'm doing the low-carb/high-protein thing at the moment. So far it's two eggs and two slices of rindless bacon (I don't like that much fat in the morning) with a little salsa on the side. Noms.

Learn something new every day! Now I know you can freeze egg yolks. I've not used just the whites very often, but it's so painful to throw away the yolks. I'll remember this.

You are amazing being able to do all that. *points up* I can't even IMAGINE. My legs and knees ache just thinking about it. OUCH.

Good luck on the audition! You were so cute and funny in the AC commercial. They'll be lucky to have you in this new thing, whatever it is.

I know - I don't want to waste any food, ack! I'm looking into buying powdered egg white. i don't know if they're gross, or what, though. I'll report back. :D

It's funny, Anne, I didn't hurt afterward like I expected to. I was worn out, but not muscle throbby. Then today for my audition I had to wear heels. OH MY GOD MY LEGS. I look like a newborn colt wobbling around. :D

Heels are the invention of the DEVIL. Funny you should mention them because I was just talking about them with the boys on Friday -- I think we'd seen a woman walking around the airport with god-awful teetering heels or something, maybe it was on TV (my memory is awful). I told the boys in no uncertain terms what I thought of them. Ha!

I have pretty low heels on - they're my most comfortable "dressy" shoes. BUT STILL. OW.

but those crazy stilettos for anything other than getting out a limo and into a chair? UGH.

I freeze yolks (and whites) separately in an ice cube tray. Freeze 'em, then pop the individuals into a Zip-loc for future use.

The lightning last night was like flash bulbs at a red carpet event. No thunder, just the lights going off. Very cool!

That's a good idea!! I'm wondering about those carton egg whites, though, save the trouble of separating them out? I've not read anyone's comments on those yet...

Oooh, we had that this morning! I love lightning storms. <3

YMMV, but this is how my chef-stepfather stored seperated eggs... he would seperate a dozen at a time, and put into two ice cube trays

Yes on freezing egg yolks and also I think I'm dying just *reading* what you did.

Do you know what would happen if I tried to hop on one foot in a criss-cross pattern for a minute and 30 seconds?

*I* would need a prosthetic leg! AND ARM!

From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
Have you used the carton egg whites? I'm looking at savbing the trouble of separating eggs in the morning, because I always want the easy way out. :D

The guy with the prosthetic leg used a stool on the single leg hopping exercise, so you can do that! Or hold a wall, or just hold my water bottle. ;D

From: [identity profile] swmbo.livejournal.com
Hahha, I vote option C. I will hold your water bottle in one hand and my book in the other and then be like "nice jumping frog, Stoney! Hop. That's right. NOW HOP HIGHER!"

I haven't, because I view them all with great suspicion. But I think it'd be a good idea to try it because yeah, separating every day would drive me mad. Sometimes it drives me mad when it's just ONE day!

It would be even better if when you tell me do push/jump harder, you've not even looked at me once. HA!

i've gotten a positive review on a particular brand of egg whites, so I think I'll give that a whirl tomorrow AM. The chicken scramble with some salsa sounds like a perfect morning wake up to me!

I'll stick with my jump rope, thank you.

Also, gap leap is my preferred method of going around my room. It's a small room.

And everybody in Poland calls it a raspberry. Well, a "malinka", but you get the idea.

I can't remember if Texas had Safeways or not... I remember shopping at Albertson's while I lived there, but anyway, I just tried the Lucerne brand of "Best of the egg whites" in a little half n half style carton, and they were actually really good.
Good luck finding something palatable.

Yikes, my ankle (the sprained one) is throbbing in sympathy at all those squats. It's hurting today from standing around cooking yesterday, so squats like that probably aren't on my agenda in the near future. Meanwhile, the rest of me is intrigued - I mean, who knew there were so many different types?

And I've been exactly like you in my step class a few times where I've thought I'm going to have to drop to the floor and cry like a baby - because, sheesh!, who can keep up with the instructor? - when I've looked over to see the 90+ year old man who also takes the class cheerfully bouncing along. That's never failed to put me in my place and gotten me to pull up my big girl panties and get back to work :-).

Date: 2009-04-27 05:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
I had no idea there were so many different squats, either! I would recommend the intro videos this series has for when your ankle gets back into shape. P6, I think? Plus, they're half hour workouts. Every other workout in my series is almost 2 hours long. HOLY CRAP.

I love being reminded that I'm being a cry baby, too. Otherwise, I'd sit around in a muumuu eating powdered donuts all day long. Mmmm, donuts...

Your work out still makes me hurt just hearing about it.

Jonah loves him some Stoney!! He was pretty good on the way home, kind of meltdown around south OKC, but good once he got out of the carseat at home.

I went to the ER this morning because of my eye -- swollen completely shut and the right one getting puffy. They gave me steroids and some eye wash and said it was some sort of extreme allergic reaction (to what?? whole foods and exercise? Hahahaha!) It wasn't as horrible an uninsured experience as I'd feared, $72 for the visit and $17 for the script.

LOVED seeing you, your legs are AMAZING and I hope-hope-hope you get the OK job!!! *hugs*

I just did the arms/shoulders workout. I need heavier weights. The ab routine that followed though? mommy!

You poor thing! Extreme allergic reaction? Holy smokes, to what, I also say! Yow. Sorry for the unexpected costs. It REALLY didn't look weird or anything, honest engine. I'm that person that would say you have shit in your teeth. You had no metaphoric shit in your eye. ;)

Poor baby. Also, THANK YOU. *preens* you're the only one saying it. Ahem. Someone had a session today and won't talk about it.

HI BEFF. Don't forget that Annajoy had massive surgery today - call the folks if you can. (She's in recovery right now - the surgery went well, but she's scared and hurting.)

If I can't find the Lucerne egg whites that have been recommended me, I'll freeze up them yolks. And then it's a'custard makin' fer me.

You realize the whole point of having the one-legged man in the video is to make us two-legged folks feel like pathetic slobs for thinking about giving up? Good to know it worked on you. :)

Also, my older brother was telling me about this workout, and he said he'd be doing it for two weeks and he has never been so sore in his entire life. He didn't go into details but now that I see the routine I can see why.

He mentioned the egg whites, too. I can also see that he was not joking about that.

Finally, I'm glad to see that there is another person in the world who uses the word zrbit!

I am just starting to get sore after three days, and I am SOOORE. LIke, I just climbed a massive mountain sore, that kind. Tomorrow is Yoga, so some deep stretching should help a bunch.

I don't know if you read the comments, but there's a recommend for egg whites in a carton by a specific brand (may be hard to find) Lucerne? I picked some up this afternoon, and my thoughts are that putting them in a scramble/omlete will make it hardly noticeable that it's not fresh from my hands, you know? I'll keep everyone posted. :D

Zrbit! That's because we're awesome and watched Bill Cosby do zrbits on Rudy and friends as Cliff Huxtable. <3

I scanned through them but I am really just procrastinating from my writing - although I suspect the fact that I have been up since 4 a.m. may have something to do with that as well - so I must have missed it. Egg whites in a carton sound like a good idea. Also, my weight-lifting magazines usually have ads in the back for egg whites in these containers that remind me of the ones they use at salons, that look like big drums with the pump on top. If you can't find the Lucerne stuff, let me know, and I'll dig out those ads.
