I absolutely CANNOT get a file to convert from mp4 (recorded on my iPhone, plays beautifully in all media) to mp3 (which I need for a job.)

I get distorted sound out of the end product. I've tried converting it to .ogg and then to mp3, but it fails every time. HELP!! Anyone?
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mosreal I was able to get my iTunes program re-set to do it for me, with success. THANK YOU for so quickly offering me your help, I really appreciate it!

I use ffmpegX for all my conversion needs. Have you tried that?

Is it free ware? The things I've used: zamzar, Winamp, free_cd music converter.

My end result is either failure, or, in the case of Zamzar, a distorted, slowed down audio track.

Ah, you must be using windows.

Hmm, an equivalent would be this, though since I'm on a Mac I haven't tried it:

Yep, I'm a PC. :)

I found a way to do it in iTunes, so I'm good. THANK YOU SO MUCH for immediately responding, I really appreciate it.

Hmmmm... Do you have iTunes? You can right-click on a file and choose 'convert to mp3' and it will create a second file in that format.

Hehe, no worries! I had to hunt down that particular info myself, as my new mp3 player wouldn't accept mp4s. But now everything is working harmoniously. Glad I could help!

iTunes isn't giving me that option, only AAC. And then it's not AAC when it's finished. o_0

Of course when I'm desperate for something to work, it won't. GAH.

Do you mind if I ask how you got iTunes to offer you the option of converting to mp3 instead of just to AAC? 'Cause that's the only option mine gives me.

Click Edit-> Preferences -> General tab -> Import Settings. Pick mp3 out of the line up, and then when you right click on a song in your playlist, it shouldn't read AAC any longer, but mp3.

If you get stuck, go to the Help Menu and type in FORMAT under the index tab - it will tell you step by step what to do.

YAY!! Got it. Thank you!!

One more iTunes related question, if you don't mind, and then I'll leave you alone about it.....do you have any idea how to get iTunes to recognize .avi files? I've tried getting them converted over to iPod friendly for a while now and nothing I've found has been able to help.

I use a free program called VDownloader (http://www.vdownloader.es/). I originally got it to use to download clips from YouTube - you tell it the url from the YouTube page and it downloads it and saves it in any of a number of formats, including AVI and MP4 (iTunes format).

However, you can also use it to convert AVIs very easily. Just set the output format to "iPod - iPhone Compatible" and then use the File menu to "Encode Video File". Out comes and MP4 and you just drag and drop it into iTunes. I use it to watch TV programs on the iPod.
