In case you didn't know this...
Jan. 12th, 2010 07:13 amI even SAID in my post linked up top that I haven't seen a particular something, and that's just how the comment led off, "Oh you haven't? Here's what you'll see!" WTF. If I've made a cut for spoilers, that is your clue to go crazy nuts ON THAT ONE TOPIC. Don't come in and reveal the identity of Kaiser Soze when we're talking about the latest Wiggles episode.
All I'm saying is that there are a few people that I do not know from Adam that need to dial it down a bit and think before they post. I don't care that it was a silly reality show. I don't care if it was the newest Nike commercial that I'm wanting to see: DON'T SPOIL PEOPLE. In case it's not obvious, that really pissed me off. Not to mention that my inbox was filled with random comments from four or five other posts, too, some posts going back a year or more. (That happens ALL THE TIME. Guys, I just don't have the energy to go back, re-read old comments and posts in order to remember the context, any random off-shoots that post caused, etc. just to give YOU a satisfactory answer, Internet Stranger.)
ONE COMMENT ON ONE POST. ONE. Say your piece there. Make sure it's spoiler free. Make sure you're not breaking any of THESE IMPORTANT RULES THAT ARE ALWAYS LINKED AT THE TOP OF MY JOURNAL. I'm not going to try and gently help people figure out the internet/LJ any more. I get too many comments/random folks in here to help them figure things out. We should all know how to use Google at this point. Sorry. I'm not your mama.
But tell ya mama I axed how she durrin. And act like you know. (And I'm now going to research the option to close commentary on old posts. That seems like a simple solution to me.)
Yes I did just wake up. This isn't how I prefer to start my mornings, either.
[ETA] And it should go without saying that my LJ isn't for everyone, and there are no hard feelings for bugging out. Which a handful of you have already done. I applaud your sensibilities, even if I don't share them. Sail on into this good night, Cap'n! *salutes*

Date: 2010-01-12 01:29 pm (UTC)Watch out with the standard "disabling comments", because iirc that can hide? or erase? all the existing comments.
(Oh, and I totally plan to read-and-comment-on a couple-day-old post of yours as soon as I get a chance to watch Big Love! We don't have HBO anymore, and I teach ESL on Mondays, so I'm probably going to be watching it on Tuesday for the foreseeable future.)

Date: 2010-01-12 01:43 pm (UTC)(You can totally do that with me re:Big Love because we are tight like 10 toes in a sock. But someone I don't know that feels compelled to leave 3 or 4 comments on a 2 year old post, to other people in threads, to me... I never know which they're expecting. Once I replied to a comment in a thread and the person told me they weren't asking ME, they were asking someone else in the thread. ON MY LJ. Which meant I was supposed to check and read all comments FIRST before replying in my own LJ to a 2 year old post. THE FUCK?)

Oh, and I don't mind that - having a conversation in a post with someone is totally cool. Going back a year or two on a post and demanding answers to something in a thread of three people that's 12 comments deep where I have no idea what the answer is unless I go back and re-read everything... That's the stuff that drives me bonkers. There's only so much time in the day I can devote to LJ, you know?

From:[ rambly thoughts plus unrelated question ]
Date: 2010-01-12 07:23 pm (UTC)and anyone who does, DESERVES to be banned from commenting, imo. D:<
the spoiler issue aside, though... i'll admit right now that i do have a habit of (a) reading and commenting on people's old posts, and (b) occasionally posting more than one comment on an entry.* if i know that someone doesn't like this, i won't do it -- but by default, i usually assume that people won't mind.** am i a dick for doing so? i dunno... i hope not. >_>
i guess the main reason i comment on old posts is that i myself love getting comments on stuff i posted a while ago -- especially if the post was on some interesting topic i might like to discuss again, and ESPECIALLY if it never got many comments in the first place (this happens to me a lot; and i'm guessing it's a major difference between my journal and yours).
anyway, i don't have you friended,*** so none of this should be a concern for you, i suppose (i just had some thoughts on this, so figured i'd share them). but i guess if i do friend you, i'll do my best to remember your feelings on the matter. deal?
oh, and fyi: there is a way to disable comment notifications without disabling comments altogether: when you go to set the "allow comments?" option, you can just set it to "don't email." thought you'd like to know.
ok, ramble over. here's the...
ACTUAL REASON I'M COMMENTING:
back in november, i asked you about participating in
well, we do. so i'm asking. if you'd be willing to consider it, let me know and i'll link you to the assignment -- then you can tell me if you feel up to it or not. how's that? i won't push; but i'd still love to have you on the roster, frankly. <3
oh, and... my first instinct was to post this as a separate comment from the unrelated ramble above. but as you said you don't like too many comments from the same person, i'm condensing this all into one. i hope it's not too tl;dr as a result. >_>
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* this will usually happen for two reasons: 1) if i have two vastly unrelated things to say, and/or the comment is getting too long, i might break it up into two separate topics. or 2) sometimes i scroll through other people's comments and might add my two cents to a discussion that really catches my eye.
** i do try to refrain from having long-ass conversations with another commenter in somebody else's journal, though (unless i've asked that person if it's ok, and they've said yes). that seems like a pretty obvious rule of netiquette.
*** ...yet? i don't know. you're on my list of "people to consider adding" -- i just haven't ever gotten around to it. but i definitely think you seem like an interesting person; and an intelligent one, whose posts ought to make for a good read. so, uh. maybe i'll stop being a lame-o and just go add you. *cough*
Re: [ rambly thoughts plus unrelated question ]
Date: 2010-01-12 07:33 pm (UTC)Comments on old fics? AWESOME. Debate-style questions on a rant I dashed off two years ago? Not so much.
I'll have to think about that "don't email" option, thanks for the heads up on that.
And LOL - you didn't teal deer. I just don't think I'll have the time to participate in any fic challenges. I'm still working on my first book's rewrites and starting a second. I'm sorry. I'm flattered, but I'm sorry to say I just can't. Thank you for thinking of me!

From:Some mention of New Moon (possibly minor spoilers)
Date: 2010-01-12 08:48 pm (UTC)As for old posts...I'd just like to thank you for your review of New Moon. An online friend was in town staying with family, and her parents had offered to mind her children so she could go and see it last night. She wanted some company, so I met up with her. I think I've now had my first experience of Twimums* (the Kiwi version of Twimoms). I also suspect that with my Stoney-gifted cynicism towards the Twilight phenomenon (thanks for that, BTW :-) ) I was not of a like mind to most of the others there, all 20 - 30 of them. For me, the funniest bit of the whole movie was the reaction of the other viewers the first time Jacob took his shirt off - the big sigh/murmuring/slight moan (*that* sort of moan, not the groan sort) that rippled through the theatre. The only word I could make out was "hot" and I don't think it was from a menopausal woman complaining about having a flush. So there they were, mainly 30-40 somethings, lusting after some young shirtless bloke, and I was biting my lip and shaking with silent laughter so I wouldn't embarrass my friend. So yeah...thanks again for your Twilight-related reviews. They had me quietly laughing to myself all through a movie that would otherwise have been nothing but teen angst and lovey-dovey looks.
Re: Some mention of New Moon (possibly minor spoilers)
Date: 2010-01-12 08:59 pm (UTC)Isn't it fun to people watch in a situation like that?! Wow, those older women sure get naughty over that young man. Sure, he's an attractive-bodied kid, but EW.
