First and foremost, it is one of my oldest LJ friends and RL friend to boot,
crazydiamondsue. I know you're buried to your neck in babies and toddlers and good mommy behavior, but I love you, and hope you're having a wonderful day.
Second, we have a new reviewer at Hey, Don't Judge Me and she wrote up a Scream 4 review that is hilarious and fangirly, what's not to love? Support your local fangirls trying to cast a wider net. :)
Third, I continue my love affair with Game of Thrones (yes it has some race fail, etc., but if I wait to watch shows without problems I'd never watch tv, and then what do I do? Interact with other humans? PSHHT.) and have my newest recap up at Hey Don't Judge Me as well.
REMINDER: no spoilers for future eps either here nor there, pls. We're going ep by ep as it happens, so don't leak intel, mm'kay?
It is raining for the fortieth day and I am waiting for my hot, dry weather, please. Mama needs a tan.

Date: 2011-04-26 02:47 am (UTC)As is the Dany/Drogo relationship because despite the hotness, it's also kind rapey.

Date: 2011-04-26 03:06 am (UTC)It's also a fantasy world of arranged marriages, and that's how a lot of them are, I'm guessing. *shrug* I can't abide that in real life and will fight tooth and nail for women's rights, but in high fantasy I hand wave. Wrong? Maybe, but at least I'll be upfront about it.
Like I said in the post, if I waited for every show to be accurate/fair, I'd never watch tv. That's what fanfic is for, to right the wrongs! :)

Date: 2011-04-26 03:26 am (UTC)I've been told that the novel portrays the Dany/Drogo scenes as more consensual (she actually says yes to him on their wedding night) and he doesn't really force her. I'm not sure why whoever adapted that part changed it to the point where it seemingly romanticizes rape.
People like me don't really have any other choice but to watch/read portrayals that aren't exactly accurate/fair...I wish I could ignore it, but it's difficult as a person of color. If I ignore it, things will never change.

Date: 2011-04-26 03:40 am (UTC)But in sci fi/fantasy you're right. It's dominated by white men who write themselves and what they see (other white people) in their stories. I just interject my own rainbow coalition into the material, personally, because there aren't enough people writing fairly.
IDK, man, I'm just a chick trying to make the best of things with what I'm given. I'm trying to see the Dothraki as people who are just pigmented with more melanin because they're in a warm climate (ie: they're tanned from sun exposure), not as a "people of color are savages" way. It might be naive of me, but IDK if it helps to know that a white chick sees what you're saying about color and wishes it were different (and tries to make other people see their bias?)

Also, I'm trying to NOT spoil her too much.

Date: 2011-04-26 06:29 pm (UTC)OT - I think I DM'd you about this book I got that you should read. It's an out-of-print book called "Were You Always an Italian?"
It's about Italian-Americans, and how their experiences/dialects/memories relate to real Italians. A quote from the back "Laurino sifts through the stereotypes bedeviling Italian-Americans to deliver a penetrating and hilarious examination of third-generation ethnic identity."
It was written in 2000, so it misses the Jersey Shore phenom, but references (of course) the Sopranos. The chapter on dialect, I think you'd love.
When we finally meet, do NOT let me forget to bring this to let you have! :)
