Yesterday I went to this great consignment shop with my sister and they had some amazing things like medical anomaly pictures and models of eyeballs and things like that. I took a picture of one that was amazing (it was behind glass, so I couldn't see the other pictures behind it, my hands were full with other things.) I've got that behind a cut by itself because it might be disturbing to someone else, but I'm fascinated with it. (Malformed unborn, for those who need to be warned.)

BIG SPACE FOR SCROLLERS

I also found a cool trilobite plaster that looked like it was from a classroom and loads of gorgeous barnacles. Check it - and after that are a bunch of pics from my garden.

For scale, here's a nice juice Pink Lady apple.

Barnacle cluster!

Close up!

The view from my porch, looking left:

From the right:

(I can't remember if I posted these already, sorry, if so)

Mama and baby bird!

The first peony (taken a few weeks ago)

Some of my lily stands:

I love these yellow ones. I have about 40 more that are just opening of this color alone.

My driveway veggie/flower bed:

1. Tiger lilies
2. striped Crinums, recently transplanted - these will get about 5 feet across
3. shallots & garlic, almost ready to have the leaves broken so they'll bulb up
4. blue agave - this should get massive. You can't tell but this bed is 6 feet across
5. onions, almost ready for their leaves to be broken so they'll bulb up, too

There are strawberries starting to spread every where as ground cover.

I am very ready for the weekend to be here.

Hunh. That looks like it's a pair of very, very conjoined twins.

Also there's some flowers or something behind the cut?

I have the feeling I've just told people far too much about what I actually spend time looking at online.

Isn't that fascinating?! I want to see all of the others. When I was in college, my anatomy professor had all sorts of medical maladies in jars. I've always been that kid, too. :)

That's my thought, too, joined at the chest. It's half of each baby's face that makes it look like a frontal single face. Freakish and fascinating!

Beautiful! I found my peony, which I was afraid I lost after we had a wood fence installed. But I found it and trimmed the Hydrangea to make room(it didn't mind).

If you ever make it to Philadelphia, PA(and provided you haven't been), then you should go to the Mütter Museum. It's amazing!

I was just talking about the Mutter Museum to someone yesterday! I'd love to go, that's just my sort of place.

You must! It is truly fascinating. I spent hours there with my baby in a sling. They had a temporary exhibit on late 19th century forensic evidence and another on lead when I went.
But their collection of specimens are not only extensive, but brilliant. One woman leaned over to me and said "I would really hate to have my vagina on display for all of eternity like that unknown woman." heh

oh my god. I literally just finished reading an article about a baby that looked exactly like the one in your picture, at least according to verbal description. (Article: Incest, Consanguinity and a Monstrous Birth in Rural England, January 1600) Apparently those defects have to do with a particular faulty gene that gets expressed when people marry family members. It is pretty rare, but common enough to be identifiable.

Your plants are beautiful, by the way.

Oh that is SO FASCINATING. And it makes sense, too. I'm off to find that article, thanks!

And thank you for that compliment, too. :)

I envy you your garden and cannot imagine the time you've spent on it. It's gorgeous.

Also, shallots, garlic and onion planted with flowers? O_o

Thank you! I have some baby beds that will look amazing in another year or two, but I'm pretty pleased with it overall. :)

Err, why not? I don't want a dedicated veggie bed, so I slip them in among the flowers (it helps with pollination, too) so that I don't have "bare spaces" once I harvest. They don't hurt one another?

They don't hurt one another?

No, it's just that I've never actually seen anyone do it before. But it makes sense-the soil of a garden bed is undoubtedly looser than a regular garden, I would think. I've read that parsley enhances the scent of rosebushes but have no idea if that's true.

Looking left from your porch... is that a Japanese maple? I ask because my landlord just put in two beside our porch, and I'm unreasonably excited about it...

It is! That's a weeping Japanese maple, in fact. I loooove them. I have four on my property.

I cannot wait until I have my own house so I can garden. The one plant I had on my apartment porch got eaten by my cats.

I wish someone would garden at my house FOR me. I love to have a pretty yard but am so clueless about what I'm doing that I end up killing half the plants I put in, and then I feel bad for them.

I don't claim to have any knowledge at all about gardening, but it seems like a neat hobby that reaps rewards visually and tastily for the effort that you can put in.

What I want most of all is my own veggie garden. Maybe berries and herbs too.

Gorgeous pictures! Well, of course all except pic #1, wow, that's amazingly weird. Sounds like it was a very different kind of consignment shop from the ones around here, which seem to sell only boring old clothes. I really like the barnacle cluster, which is both beautiful and interesting.

Your roses are spectacular!

It's the first time I've not walked through a consignment shop with my nostrils pinched, they tend to have that "cleaned out Grandma's attic" smell, don't they?

Those barnacle clusters were AMAZING. There were loads of them, too. I love stuff like that. (And thank you re: roses!)

By the way, this afternoon I posted an entry and more than half of it is plant talk. I was thinking of you while I wrote it, of course!

I LOVE all your lovely roses. If I had a yard, I'd plant roses and peonies. *nods*

I think you need to take that jar and make it a centre piece in your garden.

I love the picture of the birds, they look so 'wha?'.

Oooh, which roses are those? I can't guess from so far away. It truly blows my mind how Austin and Dallas are only 4 hours apart, but we can grow completely different plants.
