First, links:

SouthLAnd was amazing last night. Ooooh, did some story arcs get a hell of an advance in this ep. Come talk to me about it!

The Bachelor's reunion show has a recap up, as well as the one for SMASH. (And there are some good discussions happening in The Walking Dead!) [ETA] And RINGER just went up! :)

Recs: (of the Klaine variety, obv.)

[livejournal.com profile] flaming_muse wrote a fic (There But For The Grace Of...) regarding the attempted suicide of a side character on the last episode of Glee that approaches the topic from the POV of Burt. It's achingly beautiful, as her writing tends to be, but I think it's important to read, as well. It's good for teens to know just how much they mean to their parents, and it's important for parents to realize that our kids aren't living in the same world we did - how hard it is to let your child stand on their own two feet. Even if you don't follow the show, you might consider reading just for the reaffirmation that there is deep and abiding love in the world. <3

It's more about the people in your life that you love (and who love you) than it is about the attempted suicide, if that's an issue for you.

[livejournal.com profile] robotsfighting is another under appreciated writer that has a wonderfully lyrical quality to her writing. "Since the Day We Found You" is Blaine realizing that the Hudmel House is his home. That they are his family. Beautiful and will make you want to curl up with someone you love.

Why she isn't showered with comments, I'll never understand. Support talented writers so they'll continue to write beautiful stories.

By [livejournal.com profile] kivrinengle, set in Dalton, "Of Frenchmen and Fractals" where the love affair for Kurt is for learning. LOVED this.

And lastly, for your porning needs, [livejournal.com profile] cimmerians wrote some RPS (so head's up) called Full Disclosure that made me fan myself. I do enjoy her fics, even if they make me feel bad for breaking my "No RPF" rule. ;)

(I know there are loads of stories out right now that everyone is slobbering over, but I just can't deal with weak writing. Even if the story is compelling. Stop head hopping! Read over what you've written and edit the damn misspells and repeated sentences! Know your characters!! Holy crap, is there some bad characterization out there.) There is one WiP that I'm eagerly following, but fear that the huge, yawning gaps between updates are going to sully the story, so I'll rec it once it's finished to help you not lose character/story arc. Another WiP on the GKM is compelling for the story, but I'm waiting for that to be finished and hopefully beta'd and reposted before reccing that one.

Now I go in search of tacos.

Have you checked out HBO's "Life's Too Short"?

It is scratching an itch left by the absence of "Extras." So, if you enjoyed Extras, check this one out. I've only seen two episodes so far, but both of them gave me big laughs.

Thank you. You're lovely.

I don't know why more people aren't all over [livejournal.com profile] robotsfighting's fic; all of it's fantastic. She's one of the first authors I discovered in this fandom, and I never would have joined in without her writing. I haven't read her latest yet, but that's only because my time is short, and I'm saving it for the special treat it is sure to be when I have a quiet few minutes!

I haven't - honestly, with the exception of the shows I watch for HDJM, I'm not watching any other television. I'm looking forward to up coming hiatuses, that's for sure. Thanks for the rec!

Nah, you're the lovely one. <3

You will really enjoy this one I've linked to - it's just quietly beautiful. IDK with this fandom, they want crazy things that have nothing to do with the show. *hands*

Haven't seen SouthLAnd yet, maybe tonight.

[livejournal.com profile] flaming_muse's story was heart achingly wonderful. I wish everyone had a Burt.

She's always good for a thoughtful fic, IMO.

Oh, Burt. He's the parent I aspire to be. <3

Lol, I was all "yay new fic recs" - and then I realised I'd already read three of them! I hadn't seen Of Frenchmen and Fractals before though, so thank you for that one. I've just read the first couple of paragraphs and I love it already.

Ha! I'm sorry I don't have loads and loads to share, but I'm glad you're enjoying that Dalton fic! I stumbled on it in some round about way and was so happy to find something new. :D

(I'm weird that when I'm writing fic, I don't read much for fear of seepage. If it's completely different than what I'm writing, I will indulge, however.)

OMG, yes. I was wondering if it was just me, but lately, I've found myself 2/3rds through a nice, long AU and not bothering to finish the story. Dubious characterisation is never good, but head-hopping (that's a fantastic description) is terrible too.

I really want to point out that while omnipresent 3rd person can work (see: Jane Austen for an awesome example) it's a more difficult style to manage. There's a reason why present tense, limited 3rd person POV style is so common in fanfic: it's immediate, it's gripping and it's remarkably easy to read. It's also wonderful for characterisation because there's a lot you can say about a character through what the character notices around them.

It's surprisingly nice to know I'm not the only one who's a bit unimpressed with some of the stories in this fandom. (I was so spoiled by being in Sports Night fandom in its heyday. God, small fandom but the quality level of fic was incredible. In those days, clicking on random stories always led somewhere good, not somewhere... I didn't finish reading.)

An old fandom friend coined the phrase head-hopping (when I started writing way back when, she pointed out that I was doing it, and quickly made a point to never do it again.)

I do just what you're talking about, too, reading a story and then backing out when I'm horrified by really awful characterization, or something so implausibly not the boys that I just don't know what show other people are watching.

I LOVE a tight POV. Love it. And for just the reasons you mentioned: you can express so much of a person's self that way, how they think, their immediate reactions... And then it's fun to see other people through their eyes. (I also adore an unreliable narrator.)

I get incredibly frustrated when I see oodles of fawning recs for a fic that I find baffling for all of its errors, and then someone who writes with such care like [livejournal.com profile] robotsfighting only getting a handful of comments. It's a combination of immediacy, porn, and pandering that I think appeals to a large portion of the fandom.

Hey, mazel, kids, but I'd rather have an amazing experience myself.

Slow/crashing HDJM

For the last few days, I haven't been able to get onto HDJM at all. I'm not sure if it's the new links or ads or what. I can't even scroll down to see the ads & then I'm frozen. I'm still able to get onto a lot of other sites I normally go to, just not yours.

I miss the recaps & it makes me sad! :-(

We don't have any new links or ads, so I'm not sure what could be the hold up. I just logged into the servers and everything's fine at our end.

You might try deleting your cache and going back to the main page. I'll keep my eye out for any potential weirdness. (You're the first I've heard this from, and all of my error logs are clear.)

I too get a little confused by what gets a thousand follows (except Little Numbers, which is so, so awesome). I guess for a lot of people, fandom's not about art or even appreciation of the show, it's about wishful thinking. Apparently my wishful thoughts don't mesh up with those of a lot of the world.

I don't like head-hopping and I tell people I beta for not to do it. On the other hand, I love a well-done omniscient POV when it's in service of the story. I think writers generally have to learn limited POV first. When omniscient POV in in the service of lazy writing, then I just don't know why people are bothering to write. "You want to write this but you don't want to make it good? Please explain."

Well, thanks for checking.

I've tried everything I can think of on my end and still get frozen out of HDJM. Maybe I have a lame connection. I don't know.
