I know my state is an easy target. We're huge and we're filled with loudmouths (hey, I wonder where I got it from?).

But for the past 12 years, the crazies have been the loudest (because the rest of us are busting our asses just living) and have really given my home state that I love dearly - the place that gave me Ann Richards and Molly Ivins as role models - a huge black eye.

Did you know that a poll done a few months ago showed that 69% of the population supports gay marriage/legal partnership/civil unions? And yesterday, one of the state senators from Ft. Worth "Where The West Begins" Texas put a same-sex marriage bill to the state, HB 1300.

Today I'm wearing my Texas Pride tee shirt, a prized possession from my son's first Gay Pride this past fall. It means a lot of things, that shirt. This bill is a wonderful message to the LGBT community here that things are changing. I don't have full hope that it will pass, but it will get the ball rolling in the right direction. (And congratulations to the LGBT community in Illinois for having same-sex marriage pass yesterday!)

Slowly but surely reason will win out. Science won't be a left-wing conspiracy theory, math won't be looked at as magic, and love will be seen as love, no matter how it comes. <3

I am pleasantly surprised. Good going Representatives Coleman and Anchia. You've shown times really are changing.

Go Coleman and Anchia!

And cheers to you, your beloved home state, The Mister, and all three of your sharp, thoughtful, lovely children.

Talk about news that makes me cry! My representative is the head of the House Calendar committee...perhaps I'll mosey on over to his website and drop him a little line...

TEXAS PRIDE! I agree with everything you said. I love this state very much. It is as ingrained a part of me as being right-handed or knowing all the words to The Lord's Prayer. I don't realize how huge of a black eye the crazy does give this state until I actually listen or read to people speak of it. Thank you for saying what I've thought so many times. :-)

Hooray! It's great that there's even a bill. I mean, I hope it passes, obviously, but that really gives hope to the cause!

I live in AZ - nough said? Maybe if it can happen in TX it can happen here....if a meteor hits Phoenix. And all our legislators get Hanta virus....and governor Jan Brewer finds atheism.

But gay pride in Tucson is so cool - an entire day at a huge city park with all sorts of cool stuff for adults and kids.

I did not know that, but I am not surprised! Some of the most awesome people I know are from Texas! Including your awesome self.

Like you, Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, and I'll add the incredible Barbara Jordan were the women I admired growing up in Texas. I do so agree that idiots have been running the state for the past years, but like you I believe that eventually sanity will rule again.

Those of us who love this wonderful state have to stand up for what we believe in. I'm with you, hon.

Hey, I'm from Virginia (though I like to think of it as the DC suburbs), so I can't cast aspersions (neither can I spell aspersions. that just took me about 2 minutes. but never mind), and I'm living in California, where we've mangled our same sex marriage effort.

But I also spent 2 years in Austin doing an MA during the mid-90s, and everywhere I went in the state I met Texans who were fair, big-hearted, generous and practical. I hope you guys win.

As I live in Fort Worth this gives me hope. There are many days that I roll my eyes at the things my coworkers say but one thing we agree on is this. It makes me proud that my state is finally making progress toward equality and I dearly hope this passes.
