GAME OF THRONES IS BACK and I couldn't be more excited.
I had a massive cold last week, and was lazy (read: stuck doing edits for hours on end) for the week before that, so I'm feeling decidedly out of shape and out of sorts. A happy Laura is a moving Laura, so I got back into the swing of things with my usual 5 mile walk (I'll kick that back up to 7 next week) and have added a HIIT workout regime to get my cardio back in shape, because I don't like wheezing.
But I'll be wheezing every morning for a bit... [ACTUAL FREE PROGRAM UNDER THE CUT]
HIIT workouts (High Intensity Interval Training) are THE best thing to kick start your cardio to athlete-level. I found a program online that starts slow and builds to bad ass in 30 days. I actually own Turbo Fire, which is awesome, but it's really for gym rats who live for group workouts. I want to be able to do something on my own and not need a TV.
CLICK HERE FOR THE PROGRAM - free, easy to follow. I mean, Day 1 - 10 is a total of 10 minutes, including your rest time. You need to warm up - go for a brisk walk, jog around the house for 5 - 10 minutes, jump rope, anything to get your muscles warm and ready.
The first time I did a HIIT, it was a 30 minute routine and I had a panic attack 2/3 of the way through because I couldn't breathe. That's the thing: you wear yourself out so that your body goes anaerobic. That's what jump starts your metabolism to crazy awesome levels. BUT. You know, not dying is good, too. That's why I'm liking this program, because it's realistic.
And hey, your first time/Day 1 might take you 20 minutes. You may need two minutes to rest between rounds. THAT'S OKAY. Take the time you need to catch you breath, but remember that it's okay to be breathing hard. That's good! As long as you can get it in, you're doing fine. BUT DO ALL THE ROUNDS. You will feel so damn amazing, so proud of yourself for having done it. It won't matter that it took you longer on Day 1 because by Day 5 you'll be that much stronger. Hell, by Day 10 you're going to be a BAD ASS.
Wanna do this with me? I'll cheer you on! :D

Date: 2014-04-08 03:43 pm (UTC)You absolutely have to take care of your knees. I've had knee surgery, and the recovery takes so long... Low impact is awesome! The main thing is the movements and big muscle groups being engaged, so whatever you're doing that has you feeling good, THUMBS WAY WAY UP!
Jumping moves can be hard for me if I'm not consistently working out my quads - once I got those muscles stabilized, I found I could do more. (But again, this is me, and we're all different, etc.)
If you look at Day 1, it's high knees to squats to jumping plank. Marching while on your toes (to minimize impact on your knees) could be a good work around - and squats while holding onto something could take the strain off, too. <-- just for anyone wanting to mess around, not me telling anyone what to do.
Turbofire was fun, but it's such a commitment to so many different things - I mean, a 16 week schedule of swapping this for that and then do blah blah? Ugh. Simplify, Charlene! :D

Date: 2014-04-08 03:55 pm (UTC)Chalene is great, but that program is a commitment! I did it one time all the way through and I was in great shape at the end, though. Since then I just throw a DVD in once in a while when I feel like it. She's come out with a couple of additional low impact HIIT dvd's to go with Turbofire that I might invest in.

Date: 2014-04-08 04:00 pm (UTC)It really is a commitment, right? I did it...a summer or two ago and felt great, but it was SUCH a time commitment. Half of my day felt like it centered around exercise. =/ I've seen some of her YouTube videos where she puts in a workout while climbing the stairs to her office, etc. , that sort of thing. I like to take ideas from workouts after a period and integrate them into my day - I run every morning, so I'm staying at a base level of health, but I like to see those Quads and Tris pop. :D

Date: 2014-04-09 08:05 am (UTC)1 My first knowledge of the religion is A Study In Scarlet; how badly did Conan Doyale twist the truth about Mormons in his writing?
2 In "The Matrix" episode of Screen Jonkies' Honest Trailers, when they reached the humourous STARRING section ("Kung-fu Jesus" and the like), they cut to a shot of multiple Agents Smith running in a alley, and billed it "Mormons", I don't get the joke here, what 'laughable quality' of Mormons makes this fitting in a parody way?
Thank you.
Re: Questions
Date: 2014-04-09 07:17 pm (UTC)As for your questions, I have no idea what that particular book (?) is, so I cannot answer that for you, and I'm not familiar with the Screen Junkies' Honest Trailers series, either. I would assume the joke about "Agent Smith" being related to Joseph Smith? Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you?

and
Depiction of Mormonism
According to a Salt Lake City newspaper article, when Conan Doyle was asked about his depiction of the Latter-day Saints' organisation as being steeped in kidnapping, murder and enslavement, he said: "all I said about the Danite Band and the murders is historical so I cannot withdraw that, though it is likely that in a work of fiction it is stated more luridly than in a work of history. It's best to let the matter rest".[4] However, Conan Doyle's daughter has stated: "You know, father would be the first to admit that his first Sherlock Holmes novel was full of errors about the Mormons."[4]
Years after Conan Doyle's death, Levi Edgar Young, a descendant of Brigham Young and a Mormon general authority, claimed that Conan Doyle had privately apologised, saying that "He [Conan Doyle] said he had been misled by writings of the time about the Church"[4] and had "written a scurrilous book about the Mormons."[5] However, in a preface to Volume II of The Complete Novels and Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Loren D. Estleman noted the implied criticism of the Mormons. He states that the story was not controversial at the time of the story's release, probably due to reports of the Mountain Meadows massacre and the small membership of the church.
In August 2011, the Albemarle County, Virginia School Board removed A Study in Scarlet from the district's sixth-grade required reading list following complaints from students and parents that the book was derogatory toward Mormons.[6][7] It was therefore moved to the reading lists for the tenth-graders, and remains in use in the school media centres for all grades.[8]
I guess it was wrong of him to write the LDS church as some sort of terror syndicate. Even though the creepy factor is there in RL as well.
As for Agent Smith, you bring up a very good point there, also I think calling a bunch of Smith's (he had then turned into a computer virus and was multiplying like crazy) "Mormons" might be a dig at those big families with fourteen children?

Date: 2014-04-11 03:55 pm (UTC)Also it is giving a reason to do push ups/pull ups. Which otherwise I wouldn't.
I also need to build up my ankle strength, so I can do the foot lock better. Right now I can get it in the lock and then my ankle rolls over so I can't even stand up in the silks. Woe.
