One good thing about a super frickin' hot day like today: movie theaters are niiiiice and cool.

Saw War of the Worlds. I haven't read the book since I was 9, so I couldn't remember the plot or ending. no spoilers here, BTW. But I'll say this: it stressed the hell out of me. I know I'm in the minority when I say I think Tom is a good actor, but he is. Such a smarmy jack ass in the beginning. And they had the little girl act like a bitch, which was a change for the creepy Dakota Fanning. And am I the only one that was waiting for her to say (like Newt) "Mostly," towards the end? Or scream out, "Riiiipley!!!"

It was a good blockbuster-type movie, although I felt it ended abruptly. This is where I can't recall the book, but I think they stayed true to it in that respect? The human-interest part was interesting and scary. Unfortunately, I think the people's behavior in the film is pretty close to what it WOULD be like, should we face large-scale invasion. I think I'll stock up on cattle prods, in the interim. Did hate the "Hollywood" ending, and for those who've seen it, you should know exactly what I'm talking about. It's the equivalent of the fucking dog jumping to safetly from the wall of fire and flying cars in Independence Day. GAH! Let the dog die! Make me care more! And he can jump right to her awaiting arms? While SEMI-TRUCKS ARE FLYING AT IT?

Next up: I drop the kids off at Grandma's later this week so I can see Batman Begins by myself. Hooray! I love to see movies by myself. Mostly. Newt? They named their daughter NEWT? Okay, now I have Ripley number 8 in my head mouthing (with difficulty) "Kill. Me. Kill. Me." Ha ha ha! That movie is craptastic. (Uh, Alien 4 for those slow on the pick-up. "Cleaned up" by Joss Whedon.)

Have a few unfinished fics on my hard drive. Now that [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue is BACK from LEAVING ME ALONE ON THE INTARWEBS all weekend, maybe things will straighten up around here. Otherwise, I'll need to put an ad out for a few "Stoney Wranglers." I kinda went berzerk on the web this weekend. Spammeeeee.

Mostly.

Game over, man. Who put her in charge?

Okay, used up my Alien quotes.
Happy Fourth!

And right there with ya on the smarmy - and good at it:)

get your hands off of her YOU BITCH!!!

Look into my eye...

But my fave is "mostly"

I think I'll need to have an Alien marathon this week. I think I may be the only person who liked the "arty" third installment.

Did you see it? It made me think of Magnolia, and how AWESOME and loathesome he was in that. Glen Lakes is the theater to see movies at in your neighborhood, BTW. Quiet, polite audience. (We saw it with my folks.) They wanted to go to the HOLLYWOOD theater. Mr. S said he didn't feel like packing heat to see a movie, thanks. Ha ha!!

Yep, seen all the 'Aliens' and Magnolia, but not 'War'.

Glen Lakes is fine, yeah! Classah!

Loved the second Alien movie. The first one was too damn scary for my tastes. The third was OK. There was a fourth? I so cannot remember that one. Did Joss write THAT one? I know that they fucked him up bad on one of them.

I wanna see "War of the Worlds" too, just because of H.G. Wells. Tom's an OK actor in my book, just not one of my favs. I don't go see a movie just because of him. It won't deter me from seeing something either. It's been forever since I read the book too. Maybe I'll go see it by myself this weekend when the kiddies are off camping with the spouse.

Oh, I *LOVE* the first one for that very reason. But then, I love to be scared, and there aren't many movies that can do it. The fourth is the craptastic one with the actress I hate above all others: Wynona Ryder. BLEH. So frickin' nasal. looking bog-eyed at someone isn't acting! [/tangent] Sorry.

The ending of that movie is quite possibly one of the most gory, gruesome things in all of movie-dom.

I need to remind myself of the ending. I did like that they kept the Tripods looking similar to the orginial book cover...

i think tom is a good actor, i just think he is a jackass so i don't support his movies when they are in the theaters. now video + tom cruise = gooooooood.

Man, he reminds me so much of some other fundamentalists I know... Just so wrapped up in the weirdness, that he can't think straight. Which is a shame, because I wanted to remember the "saving a family from a burning house" Tom.

*nods* totally.

ahh fundamentalism...ruining the country, one bad tv interview at a time.

also, i'm not sure what the 'saving a family from a burning house' refers to. but that may be related to the fact that i'm incredibly drunk right now.

DUDE. About seven years ago, Tom was on a walk, saw a house on fire, RAN IN, PULLED OUT THE FAMILY and saved their lives. True story. He saved a child from a flood or something, too. It was like, Superman in RL.

THAT'S the Tom I want to remember.

You're the one in my butt!!! Well, that will be with me all day. Yeah, Caza and I talked about "WotW" after having seen the trailer numerous times and how we kinda wanted to see it (Spielberg!) but eh, maybe not so much? *shrug* Maybe a matinee? I love the big summery disaster movies, though, so probably. Dakota Fanning creeps Caza out.

Batman!!! I have nothing. Send me your stories!!! Had lunch with the Caza 'rents. Hmmm - to sum that up, let's just say I can't even get an amusing LJ post out of it, m'kay? Did embarrass myself by forgetting that we pray before meals. I was *starving*! I think God's good with a few bites here and there, right? Gonna go nap now. Which will probably turn into sleep. Shagged out. Totally. Longer email later. LYLAS

First off, that's the coolest font on the coolest icon EVAH. you should go see it. i enjoyed it, to be sure. I'm anti-hollywood ending girl, and it was REALLY minor. No one else was bothered by it, as it was apparently in the book, I just can't remember. But it was really good. Very entertaining in a Spielberg way.

I WILL SPAM YOU IN THE MORNING! FOR NOW SLEEP!! I'LL TURN OFF MY CAPS!!

I haven't seen the movie yet. But... I love Dakota Fanning. I saw her interviewed on the Today show last week, and she was amazing. For an 11 year old, she has a firm grasp on this whole "it's a job" thing, and what it takes to make a movie. I applaud her professionalism. I know very few people in my RL who can compare.

Dakota Fanning is a VERY GOOD actress for such a young girl, to be sure. But she played a loathesome child in the movie and just reminded me physically of Newt from Alien 2.

Mostly.

Probably not going to see WotW in the theaters. But yayayayay, you're going to see BB! And then we can drool over Cillian Murphy even more! And then we can rps him and... I don't know, anyone! Those celebrities, they probably meet at convenience stores and just decide to go have sex in the alley! omg!

I think I've had too much sugary ice cream. Yum.

With Tom Welling of course. Because...just because. Pretty, you know.
And yeah, alley sex and knees and walls. And OMG you two have to write this! Please, please please!!

And I had chocolate fudge cake with strawberries, can't you tell?

Yum, chocolate fudge cake with strawberries! Now I want that! But alas, I am too full.

Tom Welling, exactly -- right when he came on screen, I thought, dude, he looks so much like Tom, how pretty would that be?

Or Vinnie K. Yes. Or Christian Bale, because then we could have some onset trailer-rockin' (without anyone coming a-knockin').

But the point is, it's terrible or great, depending on your pov, that when I saw Cillian Murphy on that screen, my first thought was "wow, he's got pretty lips...let's think about how he could put those pretty lips to good use..."

Guh. Tom is so pretty. Mother fu... SO PRETTY. I wish the Clark character wasn't so... Well. Let's just say that I stopped watching after S3. Which is a shame because I LOVE me some Lex. And Clark. And if I was Lana? I'd be the good girlfriend of Clark but be secretly blowing Lex and having him tie me up and punish me for being such a secret dirty bad girl.

WOW. TMI?

Dakota Fanning was the only decent thing in Man on Fire, which is a damn shame considering Denzel was the reason I rented it.

WOTW isn't my cup of tea, but I want to see Batman Begins so badly I'm almost willing to go see it at the show. I'm trying to talk my sister into going so I'll feel like I have to stay if I get antsy.

You'll have to let us know what you think after you've seen it. So far, I've heard pretty positive things.

I worry about little kids acting in so many movies like she is, though. Not many come out okay. It's amazing to see how much range she has as an 11 year old.

I *love* going to movies by myself. No one puts their ideas in your head before hand, you can find a really good seat and just tune everything out except what's in front of your face. That's one of my favorite little things to do, in fact. Good "me time."

You too! When you see it, I want to hear the squeee!

Completely unrelated to your post, an RPS question:
So yesterday, as I was crying my way through the football love story (Brian's Song) I wondered if fic about Brian's Song would be RPS? Pic & Sayer were real people (the movie even uses the real football footage whenever possible instead of recreating it) but they are also characters played by James Cann & Billy Dee Williams. I'm curious where the line is for you. Would Brian's Song fic be RPS (or any other "true" biography)?

Date: 2005-07-05 09:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] stoney321.livejournal.com
I haven't seen any, but will let you know IMMEDIATELY. :-D

Hmmm. It's RPS because they are real people, but they AREN'T because it was heavily adapted to make audiences in the 70s like the movie. I know there is a lot of NFL slash, so it would follow that there was Brian's Song fic. I'll check.

But keep in mind: RPS isn't real. It's just wishful thinking. But, yeah, I get your point.

oo, I'm off to see that tonight so I'll let you know what I think in one of my self-indulgent rambles. I too think Tom can act and I'd go as far as to say he's brilliant. I also like his nose. There will be no danger of air-conditioning - not in an English cinema, no way!

Oooh, yesh, yesh, please to be telling me your thoughts. I need someone else to talk to so I can go into details and not ruin anything.

(No a/c in the cinema? But then, is it triple digits there? Uh...40C? My calculations are bad. Something like that, though.) Texas = HOT in July and August. Almost unbearable. Thank god for the pool and the a/c of JUSTICE.

Hi there Laura! Question for you, oh movie queen: if you had to choose, and I know you haven't seen Batman Begins yet so this isn't a fair question, which would you tell us to see this weekend, WotW or Batman Begins? We're going to get our babysitter for Saturday, we hope, and I think Batman will still be running this weekend. Movies come and go with such rapidity that I can't be positive. But which one?

Date: 2005-07-05 06:44 pm (UTC)

I'd probably say Batman, just because it seems like something so fresh. I rreally enjoted WotW, but have a feeling that BB is going to hit me harder, you know?

Date!! No way you can make it a two-fer, huh? ;-D
