Day 5 of the Hide from Reality Tour...

If that makes no sense to you, no worries. I've been emo and wanky and whiney and weepy all week and completely unfit for public consumption. It's rainy and cold here today (a nice welcome change from windy and dry) so the fam has decided to watch all 4 Harry Potter movies and curl up in blankets.
And now Mr. S can see for himself what I've been talking about with Christopher Columbus being an absolute hack. (Why would Draco and Ron be awed and surprised by magic?? They grew up in magic families! Gah. Sorry...)
I made a huge pot of gumbo and some corn bread and we're just eating as we see fit and snuggling. That'll cure what ails you. Unless, you know... you're blind or something. Pretty sure gumbo doesn't cure that.
Gumbo a la Stoney
1 lb. shrimp meat
1 lb. crawfish tails (mmm, and they's runnin' now, dat be good eatin')
1 lb. andouile sausage (or chicken) chopped
1 can okra, creole style if you can find it (fresh takes a loooong time to get tender, is all)
1 can Rotel tomatoes (or three tomatoes diced, two jalapenos diced, 1/2 green pepper diced)
1 C brown rice (leftover rice is jes fine)
1 TBSP Tony Chacheres (every kitchen needs this)
1 medium onion diced (yaller if you find one)
1 red bell pepper diced (if you roast it? Peel it? Dice it? Ooooooooey! Dats real good eatin.)
salt/pepper to taste
coupla dashes of tabasco, or half a bottle if you's in mah house
Cover with chicken stock plus two inches, bring to a boil, simmer for 45 minutes, push them others out ta way ta get ya own bowl first.
Now, I'm not one to tells ya what to done did, but if you had a good beer like some Shiner Bach or some Pabst Blue Ribbon like my pappy drank? You gonna feel like you sittin on dey porch down on Pontchartrain with them catfish jumpin.
Guar-un-tee. Now, 'scuse, but I gonna get back to the movies. There's a blanket of kitties that's calling.

Date: 2006-03-18 07:12 pm (UTC)Blankies and on demand feeding sounds downright seductive, although hard to do at our house tonight, as the larger child is at work (and has some mysterious social life going on, having gone out for breakfast after an early meeting this morning, and "probably" going to the early show of V for Vendetta tomorrow) and the smaller one is in transit from the state Thespian Conferance and will hit the house like very old and badly stored dynamite sometime around nine.
Julia, with a list of things accomplished today that includes the purchase of a Jones New York skirt for $14... that I've wanted since it was $109.

Date: 2006-03-18 07:15 pm (UTC)Oooh, way to go on the shopping! There is nothing like getting something cheap - something that is of a good quality, that is.
*pours you a bowl, scootches over on the sofa* And they're all dropping like flies around me now... Light weights.

Date: 2006-03-18 07:38 pm (UTC)What goes fastest at our house is Sriracha, though, which gets stuck in half the meals we cook.
Julia, counting down to the arrival of Miss "No Sleep, 72 Hours with Other Teenagers, Concerta All Gone" in about 88 minutes.

Date: 2006-03-19 06:20 am (UTC)But since we don't have Tony Chacheres around here, what sort of stuff is in him? Is shambling after some random guy named Tony going braaaaiiiiinnnss a suitable substitution?

Date: 2006-03-19 06:23 am (UTC)Yes, that should work, but mostly... no. Let's see. Garlic powder, pepper, salt, red pepper flakes...
