Midnight, by Yaz

Midnight it's raining outside (yeah) he must be soaking wet
Everyone is sleeping tight God knows I tried my best (but)
Darling you know it looks bad
Just lost the best thing that I ever had (well)
Still I don't know hwy I did him wrong
It's too late now he's gone to say

Baby! oh no! Can't leave me now
Said think about it please
Cos I love you and I need you
And I should have thought of that before I did you wrong (oh, before I did you wrong)

Heartache, heartache yeah
When I saw his face I could see how bad I'd let him down
Cheating when he was working hard I just had to mess around
I knew from the start he ain't got much money
I should have stayed content with all that good sweet honey
He's a good strong man and I love him so
So how on earth can I let him go?

Baby, oh no! Can't leave me now
Said think about it please
Cos I love you and I need you
And I should have thought of that before I did you wrong

And now it's midnight it's raining outside
And I'm soaking wet still looking for that man of mine
And I ain't found him yet
Well all of this rain can wash away my tears
But nothing can replace all those wasted years
In all of this I tell you I have learnt
Playing with fire gets you burnt
And I'm still burning

Said, Baby!  Nooooo! Can't leave me now
Said think about PLEASE!
Cos I love you and I need you
And I should have thought of that before I did you wrong

You say you';; lose your pride
Well don't you know dear, don't you know
I'll lose so much more if you go now
Oh no oh no no...

Now it's time for you to hit me with your numbah one karaoke tune!

Tommy used to work WHERE?

Date: 2004-09-08 10:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] likeadeuce.livejournal.com
oh dear lord. there may be a generation gap, but for those of us born during the Ford administration, there was only one great roller skating song that counted:

Once upon a time not so long ago:
Tommy used to work on the docks
union's been on strike

He's down on his luck - It's tough
so tough.
Gina works the diner all day
working for her man

She brings home her pay for love
for love.

She says: We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.
We've got each other and that's a lot for love -
We'll give it a shot.

Ohhh ---oooohh

We're half way there -

ohhhh--awhhhh

Livin' on a prayer

Take my hand and we'll make it
I swear - awh-awh --livin' on a prayer.

Tommy got his six string in hock.
Now he's holding in what he used to make it talk -
So tough
it's tough.
Gina dreams of running away
when she cries in the night
Tommy whispers: Baby
it's okay
someday.

We've got to hold on to what we've got . . .
etc etc

The great thing? I had to look up those words, and I was shocked by what half of them were. And kids, I've KARAOKED this song before. MANY TIMES. I guess the answer to that riddle is, by the time you're karaoke-ing Bon Jovi, you're too drunk to retain the words.

I like that you are pretending to not know those words. Hee! And the DJ is calling for an all couple's skate with Slow Jams, so if we are heading back into 80s territory, then the next song (and I'm blinding grabbing someone's hands, BTW) is

Take My Breath Away, by Berlin

Watching every motion
In my foolish lover's game
On this endless ocean
Finally lovers know no shame
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Watching I keep waiting
Still anticipating love
Never hesitating
To become the fated ones
Turning and returning
To some secret place to hide
Watching in slow motion
As you turn to me and say

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Through the hourglass I saw you
In time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you
And turned to hear you say
If only for today
I am unafraid

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Watching every motion
In this foolish lover's game
Haunted by the notion
Somewhere there's a love in flames
Turning and returning
To some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion
As you turn my way and say

Take my breath away
Take my breath away

Seriously? I'd crack up if someone "turned to me and [said] 'Take my breath away." Someone take the mic and I'll ask the DJ about some Duran Duran.

Oh, lord. This is the night for nostalgia apparently. The thing is? I still got the long, long hair! My headbanging ability has not been impaired by maturity! (Peanut gallery: "What maturity?") YEAH!

Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet
You make the night, I always cross the line
Tightened our belts, abuse ourselves
Get in our way, we'll put you on your shelf
Another day, some other way
We're gonna go, but then we'll see you again
I've had enough, we've had enough
Cold in vain, she said

(Pre-chorus)

I knew right from the beginning
That you would end up winnin'
I knew right from the start
You'd put an arrow through my heart

(Chorus)

Round and round
With love we'll find a way just give it time
Round and round
What comes around goes around
I'll tell you why

Dig

Lookin' at you, lookin' at me
The way you move, you know it's easy to see
The neon light's on me tonight
I've got a way, we're gonna prove it tonight
Like Romeo to Juliet
Time and time, I'm gonna make you mine
I've had enough, we've had enough
It's all the same, she said

(Pre-chorus)

(Chorus)

Yeah!

Solo

Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet
You make the night, I always cross the line
Tightened our belts, abuse ourselves
Get in our way, we'll put you on your shelf

(Chorus)

Round and round
With love we'll find a way just give it time, time, time, time
Round and round
What comes around goes around
I'll tell you why, why, why, why
Round and round

OK, now I'm young. I don't even recognize that song! Sorry, but if I may:

Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
2 American kids growin up in the heartland.
Jacky goin' be a football star
Diane's debutante--backseat of Jacky's car

Suckin' on chili dog outside the Tastee Freeze
Diane sittin' on Jacky's lap, got his hands between her knees
Jacky say, "Hey Diane, let's run off hind' shady tree"
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks slacks, now do what I please.

Say uh, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Say uh, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone. They walk on.

Jacky sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean.
Well then there and Diane, gotta run off to the city
Diane says "Baby, you ain't missin' nothing"
Jacky say uh,

Oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Gonna let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt, come and save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.

Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' best they can

in a little pink house, perhaps?

My first slumber party ever involved singing that song over and over and over and ...

Now it's time for a little energy in the room:

Express Yourself, Madonna (in keeping with the 80s theme...)

Come on girls
Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this

[Chorus:]

Don't go for second best baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know, you've got to
Make him express how he feels
And maybe then you'll know your love is real

You don't need diamond rings
Or eighteen karat gold
Fancy cars that go very fast
You know they never last, no, no
What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne
Make him love you till you can't come down
(You'll never come down)

[chorus]

Long stem roses are the way to your heart
But he needs to start with your head
Satin sheets are very romantic
What happens when you're not in bed
You deserve the best in life
So if the time isn't right then move on
Second best is never enough
You'll do much better baby on your own
(Baby on your own)

[chorus]

Express yourself
(You've got to make him)
Express himself
Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not

[Intermediate:]

And when you're gone he might regret it
Think about the love he once had
Try to carry on, but he just won't get it
He'll be back on his knees

To express himself
(You've got to make him)
Express himself
Hey hey

What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne
Make him love you till you can't come down
(You'll never come down)

[intermediate]

So please

[chorus]

Express yourself
(You've got to make him)
Express himself
Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
Express yourself
(You've got to make him)
So you can respect yourself
Hey, hey
So if you want it right now, then make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not

You're older than me, and you don't remember Ratt? Whoa! I LOVED that song!

Of course, I also had total metalhead pot-smokers for birth-parents, so maybe that was just one of the perks...
