But buckets of ice! And more snow coming, I fear! Except I don't fear the snow. SNOW! In TEXAS! And it's not the end of January, when we have our one day of snowfall! :D The girls were all bundled up in their ski clothes, so excited that they had "gear." The Boy, alas, is very sick this morning, so he's curled up on his sockmonkey flannel sheets (sockmonkey!!!) with DarthAnne, and that sounds like good medicine to me. Poor little man. He's NEVER sick.

I missed a VERY IMPORTANT BIRTHDAY yesterday, but I'm becoming flakier and flakier as the months go by: [livejournal.com profile] mskakaako !! Oh, honey, I hope things with your mom get better, or that you'll feel better once you and bebekeiko are at her side. *massive love*

Because I apparently can't sleep anymore (I blame being used to having Mr. S for 9 days straight.... Um, not "having" having, but- *blush* Heh.) MOVING ON. I watched a movie that was TAILOR MADE to hit almost all of my kink buttons. OH. MY. GOD. The Lover (L' Amant)

  • Do we have a beautiful young woman coming of age? Check.
  • Is she half French, half Chinese? Check.
  • Full pouty VK lips? Check.
  • Beautiful man in Gatsby-era costume? Check.
  • Does he have an ass that can make diamonds? GUH. CHECK.
  • Do we see him thrusting and grinding into said girl repeatedly? oooooooooooh CH-CH-CHECK.
  • How about some closeups of her in bliss? And chewing on those full VK lips? *wibble* CHECK.
  • How about an obsessive, older brother that is a bit "too" interested in his little sister's sexuality? dun judge me CHECK.
  • Let's go back to the boarding school (passes out). How about a sexually maturing and beautiful female friend with... overtones? Chickity check. (There could have been more development there. I'm just saying.)
  • Am I now more in love with Tony Leung than ever before? Good god, CHECK. (Not to be confused with Tony Leung. Heh. This is Tony Leung Ka Fai from Hero and Flying Daggers, not Tony Leung Chiu Wai from Happy Together and In The Mood For Love. Although he rings my bell, too.)

Man, is this movie French. Translation: not a happy one. Obsessive. Sexual. Emotionally distant until the end. Basically: AWESOME. There will be screencapping later, because I cannot stress enough the pretty. The first hour is all sex - and it's high grade porn with a purpose. [graphic, but not gratuitous] One little thing: their first encounter is in his car (he's wealthy, she's a poor student) and it takes what seems like 5 minutes for him to slide his hand over and touch her hand. Neither of them are paying attention to the fact that they're about to touch, and yet, both of them are so hyper aware of each other's body, the slide and touch are all consuming. THAT is how you make something innocent unbelievably sexy. You hear that, Age of Innocence? (I h.a.t.e.d. Age of Innocence, by the way. Geh. Needed a re-casting big time.) Oh, and then a quick cut to the girl's face in ecstasy and then BAM. But I won't spoil it because I moaned out loud. :D

I also cannot stress enough how PERFECT Tony Leung's body is. I wanted to wallpaper my eye lids with his body and/or face. The French girl is aggravating, but she's supposed to be. She's young, she's desperate, and she's hyper aware of her own desires. So. You know. Someone difficult for a man to understand. :) She's astoundingly beautiful, and a few moments of her personal anguish and reflection were very well shot. I'm pretty sure this won awards, or was at least nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film?

Think of this as a French version of a Merchant/Ivory production, but pornier. I KNOW! [/Monica Gellar]

Belated TV talk! (still playing catch-up)

Heroes:
Why is this show so good? And I know everyone loves Peter Petrelli. I can NOT get over his wonky lip, and it's bugging the shit out of me. Basically, every time he kisses the beautiful art collector, I worry for the actress. She has such a beautiful mouth, and the Peter actor is so chicken-lipped with that weird pinching thing. I have issues. Also, ENOUGH WITH THE FLOPPY HAIR. Every shot of him has his hand puling his lank bangs out of his eyes, and not in a hot Vincent Kartheiser as a rent boy who can't get a hair cut because his John likes him dirty. *goes off to a bad place* *by which I mean an AWESOME place*

Oh, right. Heroes. I think the show is setting up Peter to be the arch-nemesis to Sylar. That's pretty obvious, huh? I'm on the slow train there? Nothing unusual for me, then. :) Hiro continues to be the best part of the show - the actor is wonderful. Funny, goofy, and heart-breakingly poignant when he needs to be. Perfect. I like that they didn't cheat on his sweetheart's death, either. (And all heroes need to have a dark past of something to keep them on the side for good, right?)

Friday Night Lights
OKAY WHAT?? How can THIS show get better every time? <3 I can't stress enough that you need to be watching this show. It is NOT about football, people. Okay, it is, but as a metaphor. It's not like the show is a football game each episode, or anything. You show me ONE SHOW on network TV that deals with the handicapped straight on like this show does. "Just because we're crippled don't mean we deserve the crumbs." I love Jason's roommate. LOVE. HIM. I also love that Coach Taylor was hanging out in a wheelchair with Jason and was shocked by how fierce Jason is. How he kind of thought that wheelchair rugby wasn't a tough sport. The look (brief though it was) of shock was great, and hammers in the message that most people dismiss the handicapped, don't they?

(And how cool that anger made Jason's hands work? That fist that connected with Tim's eye? It's like the angry ghost in Ghost. Ahahaha. ha.heh.)

TYRA. TYRA and TIM boning again. JULIE!! I love her finally coming around to the cuteness that is Matt. How Matt dismisses Landry's advice because he always gets it wrong in the explanation. Hee hee! I'm not going to lie: I'm a bit worried about this Smash/steroids storyline. I'm worried it's going to veer off into After School Special territory, but I have faith!

In conclusion: this show is fantastic. Also, Coach and Mrs. Taylor continue to be my favorite TV couple ever, because they're still sexy and funny and playful and they fight and Coach Taylor looks like he's good in the sack and is a good kisser. (Is anyone noticing a trend here? Hahaha. GET HOME, MY HUSBAND.)

Veronica Mars
So it seems that half of my flist is pissed at this show. I'm not. I still love it. It's taking a more "pulp fiction" turn instead of being "film noir," but that's a turn of a few degrees. Also, I like that Veronica is dressing more like Veronica, although I'm getting sick of the hair changes. WE GET IT. I don't know many girls that change their long blonde hair that many times, do you? Just me being picky? Okay then.

Things I love: Logan smashing the deputy's car to get into jail so he could beat the shit out of his "friend." THERE'S MY BOY. Veronica being helpless. They do this every season to make her human, and I appreciate that. It's like Logan said: you're not invincible, Veronica. And... I'm starting to like the idea of Piz and Veronica. He's so happy and bubbly, but I'm not getting the Duncan/Veronica boring vibe at all, which is nice. Mac! Mac taking the drink, testing it, dumping it, and then ignoring the guy. Hahahaha, oh, Mac. I love you and they don't have you on screen enough. (Is it because of conflicting schedules with Big Love?) I want more of the Mo/Rapist "Master" shit. What's THAT all about??

And DAMN GHB must be easy to come by, because that shit was flowing like beer. Is it not expensive or something? Because I'm assuming that my flist is all in the know about the drug scene. Beth? Ahahahaha. I'm telling mom. I AM COLD. I need to dig out my wool socks. I also need to grab Hope ze keettee and curl up, because she's a hot box. Also, she's standing at my elbow on my desk rocking herself to sleep. hahahaha! Oh, cats. I love how weird you are. and look at this beauty that I'm going to visit today. Not adopt today, because I need to sleep on it. eh. meh. gehd. I love heeem!!

It's still in the 60s/70s here, but they say our seasonal weather is on the way, hurray! It's hard to be in the holiday spirit when it's hot as October out.

I too, am worried about the Smash/steroids storyline. I'm hoping that maybe he just paid the woman for the week he took? When it comes crashing down on him, it's going to hit like a skyscraper on his head and his MAMA is going to KILL him. KILL HIM. The rest of FNL? Makes me swell with love. LOVE.

VM: Dude. I thought he said Master too, and then I was all WTF??? Do I need to re-watch sober? Maybe he was just saying MERCER and it sounded like MASTER. Logan was so amazing at the end, I actually had chill bumps. And Mac, oh MAC I <3 her so. And Wallace. And Piz is pretty cool, particularly when played off of Mac since they're such polar opposites. I'm not hating VM it's just not as good as it used to be. Last week's ep? I hated. This week, I enjoyed a lot.

We got to 80 degrees yesterday!! 80!! Then dropped to 27 last night. That's a hell of a fluctuation. Yeah, that weather's on its way. :)

Oh, how AWFUL did you feel when he showed up with the money? That scene in his church? (But then, I love that he continued on with his plan, that keeps it from BEING an after-school special, you know?)

I'm pretty sure I caught the guy saying Master several times. MASTER. Also, did I miss something? In the "previously on Veronica Mars" intro, Logan was talking about a fire in a motel? WHERE WAS THAT? (ep, I mean) As for the VM hate, you know, this time every season is when people start bashing the show. (I'm not calling you a basher)

This is when all of the balls are in the air and we're not sure where it's headed. I suspect the picture will be clearer soon. Or at least that's my hope. :)

*waves* Hi! I'm finally getting around to friending more people from Writercon. I KNOW. *flails*

Anyhow! I've been a teensy bit annoyed with VM for a few things, but they really pulled out all the stops for the fall finale. I thought it was a stellar hour of television.

Mercer & Moe were Guard & Prisoner in that experiment (in the past, before this season). So, they had a twisted relationship. This was hinted at by the Rafe & Horshack relationship, by Moe saying he'd done that experiment and it was lifechanging, and finally by the photo on Moe's corkboard of him and Mercer in their prisoner/guard outfits.

HELLO!!

Yeah - I'm getting that most people aren't enjoying VM, but I completely agree about this past episode! (Honestly, I've been watching multiple eps at once, and I think that makes a big difference in my enjoyment level of story direction, etc.)

MERCER. I could NOT remember his name today! I need to rewatch those eps, apparently, because I COMPLETELY BLOCKED that info about the experiment! *slaps forehead*

OK, you totally sold me on The Lover. Because I'm freaky that way, this is the bit that did it: Neither of them are paying attention to the fact that they're about to touch, and yet, both of them are so hyper aware of each other's body, the slide and touch are all consuming. because I ADORE that sort of thing and think it's not done nearly enough.

And we were supposed to get our one day of snow today (well, freezing rain, actually), but all the build up was for naught. It's just coldish and drizzly and dark - blech. Curse you, weatherman!

I have actually owned The Lover for quite some time, and never watched it. 1. It looked porny. I don't like *watching* actual porn. Why this is, I don't know; it's possible that I have just not watched enough good sex. 2. It looked French: not a happy one. Obsessive. Sexual. Emotionally distant until the end. That's really not my kinda movie. What's funny is your reaction kinda confirmed my opinion of it and now I'm still not going to watch it. I am so judgmental! I will watch it one day.

I don't like Peter that much either, and yeah, 'cause of his lip. I actually quite liked this guy on Gilmore Girls, in an abstract, he plays the part well kinda way. But now he's driving me crazy. And I find his character kinda whiney. I wonder what they are doing with Peter/cheerleader. Huh huh huh.

O_O

Man, I will BUY that copy of The Lover from you. (I was planning on buying it after this viewing, truth be told.) If you don't like sexy, sorrowful movies, this one is SO not your cup of tea, then. (As for not having watched enough good sex, this is good sex.)

I am SO GLAD to hear I'm not the only one with the Peter/lip hate. His character is almost nebbish. I don't like the whineyness, either. And I think we're on the outside with our thoughts on that one. (I also DISLIKE the dad, too. I mean, he's great to watch, it's not an Eve thing. I just don't think he's a good guy is all.)

Does he have an ass that can make diamonds?

You know, I think that's more than enough to sell me. I am a shallow, shallow girl.

I like Peter because even though he knew he was going to die, he went to help Claire anyway. That's one of my boggest kinks and it is one of the big reasons I love Buffy so.

And Hiro! I was heartbroken that he couldn't save the Texas chick; she was such a sweetie. And the scene with the origami cranes took my breath away. I loved that Hiro was her hero anyway; he allowed her to live fully.

VM? I still don't like the feminists setting up fake rapes. And yeah, apparently Mercer/Mo had some kinky dom/sub thing going on because of that prison experiment. I read an excellent analysis of V/L and why it can't work. Veronica doesn't mind people helping her (she asks for help right in the beginning of this ep), but it has to be on her terms. Logan does not want to be her sidekick.

ROBIN, HE HAS A DAVID BOREANAZ LEVEL ASS. *sold even MORE*

I like that Peter's a good guy. I like the CHARACTER, I just don't like the actor playing him. And the crane!! Oh, Hiro. Yeah - that he did stuck around and she STILL fell for him and- *sobs*

As for VM and the feminist rape thing, I kind of LIKE that. It's subversive. Girls are always able and capable and triumph in the end, and while I LIKE that for real life, I like even more for a TV show to do the opposite of the PC route. It's like casting a black man as a villain. It's just not done any more. (how rare for Heroes to be so subversive and diverse! Another check mark for that show, too.)

I had a bday week in NY, so yesterday was no big deal! Thank you my sweet Laura!

Snow in Texas? It's snowing back home too, but it was so warm in NY. Weirdness. Can you say EL NINO (can't do the squigly thing, can't remember 11th grade Spanish)? May Chris Farley rest in peace.

Ah, yes. *That* movie. I was shocked, shocked I say, when I saw it as a mere 17 year old. I still love Tony Leung ChiuWai bestest, even without seeing his tatas. Oh, and it was Leung Chiu Wai in Heroes not Kar Fai. :)

I can't get into Heroes and I've only seen one episode of FNL. Can't figure out this tv schedule in Ottawa still.

Ah well, the kids get a snow day. My boss called and told me not to even try to get to the clinic. So I get to snuggle under blankets and the kids get to freeze their bums off and get soaking wet. Wait, that didn't sound so appealing...

And I think y'all will be catching up on that snow and ice very soon. And get a bigger dose than we're getting - it's all done for us. We just have cold weather without the pretty white stuff.

quick update from moi (and because, le gasp!)

Tony Leung CW (aka my celeb husband) was in Hero. Also, Andy Lau was in House of Flying Daggers. And both Tonys were in this hilarious mock movie with Tony KF playing a gay disembodied head chasing after Leslie Cheung. (don't ask)

N-E-Wai.

Salutations from Shanghai! Today I interview with a GM (like the Dir. of Comm. and the Dir. of Marketing before him). I am not nervous about this, nope!

OH MY GOD!

OH HONEY!! Congratulations. (See how forward thinking I am??) Are you ecstatic to be back amongst the noise and people and glory that is Shanghai? Have some soupy dumplings for me, and when you get a free moment, tell me how it all goes!!

ZOMG SNOW AND IT IS STICKING! *hopes for enough to build a snowperson*

I have to stick up for poor Peter Petrelli, mostly because I love Milo Ventimiglia - the lip thing is because he has a dead nerve in his lip, from birth or something, apparently. (Also apparnetly, so does Sylvester Stallone, and they're playing father and son in the new Rocky movie. Funny, that.) And the emo-bangs (which I also detest) - supposedly he hates them but the director guy won't let him cut them because "they are integral to the character". WTF?

And yeah, Peter is totally going to be anti-Sylar. It took me about as long as it took you to figure it out.

See, I was SO WORRIED about offending you by not loving your boy. :) Then again, I'm usually all alone with the lusting after Will Ferrell, so it's that whole "different strokes" thing.

I just saw an ad for the new Rocky! What the hell, Stalone? LET IT GO.

You're cold? Bwahaha! It's currently 9 degrees here. It was -7 this morning. *mwah!*

Not reading your Heroes comments b/c I didn't watch yet, but FNL? OMG LOVE!!!!! The Billy/Tim interaction this week just killed me. The bag of peas? I have peas in my freezer just for use as ice packs. *g*

As for VM. I just watched this week's ep and I liked it, but I have not been liking the season that much. I just haven't felt like they've been keeping Veronica consistently in character. It's been frustrating to me to watch. I also have issues with the way they're presenting Greeks and feminists. But I'm picky about shit like that. We shall see. I'm loving Logan this season. Loving him (not that I didn't love him before). And I love Wallace and Mac when they actually get screen time. I don't want V/Piz, but I won't be mad if we get it.

Heee!! Oh, I'm not cold. I'm in HEAVEN! There's a soft snowfall right now. Nothing like what you're getting, to be sure, but pretty and UNUSUAL for us!

How is FNL so good? Every. Single. Week. And Billy and Tim at Coach's house made me SO NERVOUS. They're practically feral!

I love Logan this season, too. He seems like he's grown, but still has all of his issues. I would agree to Veronica seeming a bit less Veronica-ish. I'm hoping the snowball effect for the season kicks in soon so everyone gets back to loving that show. :)

The Lover is one of my favorite movies of all time. For all the reasons you said. It's been a while since I watched it, but yes to everything you've said.

And Tony Leung from Hero and House of Flying Daggers? LOVE HIM.

And we just don't watch the same tv shows! *laments*

*so woefully behind on LJ, zomg*

The Lover - am I SO GLAD I did a search for all Tony Leung movies at Netflix!

I'm spazzy with TV! I don't watch much, so I have to be so strict - what shows are you all about? (If you say BSG, I'm waiting for Netflix to send me all of the discs - I'm wanting to catch up!)

No kidding. FNL is keeping up with the quality. The more they show of Street, the more and more you see that the kid really was going to be a star. Because he has awesome character. His speech about wanting to compete... and really great acting. They are really rocking that storyline and doing a great job of not turning it into the afterthought of the Matt Saracen coming of age story.

Dave, it's so good! Completely agree with you re: Street. I've not seen a show deal with physical handicaps like this one EVER. I'm really worried about the Smash ABC Afterschool Special potential, but I have faith. (And awww. Poor Matt. I like the sweetness mixed in with all the Roman Empire elements, honestly.)
