Randomosity and a Poll of IMPORTANCE
Jun. 11th, 2008 10:53 am1. My son is upstairs singing "Master of Puppets" by Metallica. It's like hearing the Vienna Boys Choir sing metal. (His voice has yet to change, you see.) Also, is it strange that my 6 1/2 year old knows the words to "Psycho Killer" by the Kinks TALKING HEADS? (UM, sorry. The Kinks were playing in the background. My subliminal mind is stronger than my conscious mind...) Or is that AWESOME? I'm going for #2. (At least there's no Hannah frickin' Montana in my house.)
2. I have finished Serentiy and will now embark on all of your awesome recs from last week, again: THANK YOU!!
3. I'm curious as to people's preference in how they read fanfiction, meaning, how to you like it doled out? This is for anyone who reads fanfic, regardless of fandom. And awaaaaaaaay we go!
[Poll #1203325]
4. I think it's ADORABLE how y'all up north are wilting under the 90+ degree temperatures. Hey, know what we call that here? May. Wanna know how we deal with it? AIR CONDITIONING. And cold alcohol. We've been hovering in the 100s with 45 mph winds from the dry, dusty lands of Mexico. For 8 straight days, 100s + hot winds that knock you off your feet and they don't even die down at night. THAT my friends is misery. But the winds are gone today and the community pool is sparkling, but not as much as the condensation on the side of my glass of lemonade. Ahhhhhhhhh.

Date: 2008-06-11 04:00 pm (UTC)I can't do the poll 'cause i don't really see my choice. If a fic is complete i'll generally open a new tab to the main page of it, the tags page or the memory page for all the parts and read. Off-site is okay so long as it's not something funky, like purple stars on pink or whatever.
I think the heat feels more miserable 'up north' because it's generally accompanied by a humidity that hovers in the 90th percentile. Gaaaaah. It feels like breathing through a wet, hot blanket. And trying to walk around swaddled in one. Yerk.

Hee, you all are TOUGH. MAY??? That's MAY? May here is rain and temps in the 50's. We're delicate! We need a little heat-em-up foreplay before we get to the full on sweat-through-everything stage. :P
Now I want a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. I BLAME YOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUU!

Date: 2008-06-11 04:18 pm (UTC)This? This is different. This is walking outside into a fucking wall of wet cotton that threatens to suffocate you with every breath. This is a SAUNA all day long, not just for 20 minutes. I woke up the other morning and couldn't see out my windows. they had fogged over like your bathroom mirror does with condensation.
And air conditioning is great. As long as your unit doesn't freeze up or die or the violently scary thunderstorms that accompany said sauna don't cut off your power.
I'm just sayin...
And I prefer to devour fic all at one sitting thank you. Fics doled out a chapter at a time make me itchy. And impatient.
I'm so pleased that you've finally found the wonder that is Firefly. It's a beautious thing killed before it's time.
And you are just plain beautious. *snug*

I'll be posting an LDS missionary m/m over on insanejournal all in one fell swoop, incidentally. HI BABY!! I MISS YOU. *hugs you to bits*

Date: 2008-06-11 05:33 pm (UTC)Hmm, I chose multiple chapters, though I prefer to read a complete fic all in one sitting. That doesn't stop me from reading WIPs, though, as much as I try to stop myself. I have no willpower.
I'm in the Boston area, and generally, we don't get very many days like this, even at the height of summer. I don't know many people with central air, those of us that have it at all have window/wall units and that's it. The biggest issue for me is when it's in the 50s, like it was last Friday, and the next day it's in the 90s, like it was last Saturday. That kind of drastic weather change messes me up.
As for schools closing early - they don't have ANY A/C at all. Most schools break for the summer before this kind of weather hits.

Date: 2008-06-11 05:39 pm (UTC)I can't stand those big jumps in temp, either - a good recipe for getting sick. (That's how our spring is. 40s - 50s one day, 80s the next, and back again in two days. Fortunately, our spring only lasts a month. *g*)

Date: 2008-06-11 07:53 pm (UTC)And yeah, you get it WAAAAAAY worse out in West Texas than we do. I couldn't take the wind, personally. We have just enough trees here at the edge of the prairie to not make me want to kill someone.
How do you live without A/C? That should be against the law. You could talk to someone in your line of work, you know. Heh

Date: 2008-06-11 07:55 pm (UTC)I'm so sad for the folks being ravaged by floods in the midwest! Good lord, it's like the End of Days out there! I just have heat and tornadoes, I don't have to worry about my house washing away. (Even though we had weird flooding last year, it's very rare.)
BE SAFE, OMG.

Date: 2008-06-11 08:23 pm (UTC)My memory is SWISS CHEESE, Laura, so I have decided that I should only read fics in one sitting if at all possible. Because otherwise I waste all kinds of time going back and rereading old chapters over, and over, and over... just to remind myself of what happened the last time I read them. Even if it was yesterday. Seriously.
I'm going to wind up one day with sticky notes papering the walls of my house instead of wallpaper because I need them to remind myself of *everything*, my memory is THAT BAD.
no subject
Date: 2008-06-11 08:37 pm (UTC)I have calendars with all of my notes on them, and I keep them for a year, because that's how often I need to go back and find something. (Like bus schedules, counselor's phone numbers... It's terrible.)

Date: 2008-06-11 08:35 pm (UTC)My answer for 3 is entirely dependent on knowing for certain that it IS complete - I'm happy to wait between chapters if I know there's more coming, but I don't read WIPs.
4- Hah! 90+? They should try Australia! Summers here in Melbourne regularly get over 40C (104F), and we live in the COLD bit of Australia. The northerners laugh at our complaints...
no subject
Date: 2008-06-11 08:45 pm (UTC)I'm with you on WiPs. I've been burned before, too. I like knowing something is complete, myself.
Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie, oy oy oy! I'm from Texas, and we're the Australians of the States. :D We have similar weather to you, too. Our summers get to 115 and sometimes more. That's what pools and cold beer were invented for, right? But of course, you're starting your winter now, if I'm correct...

Date: 2008-06-11 08:53 pm (UTC)But other times, when it's a scenario I like and a pairing that interests me, it's just like, "om nom NOM!" awesomeness that I get to devour all at once.
Still, I have in the past definitely posted fics that are complete by doing one installment at a time, and I'm sure I will in the future. There are far more people who will be willing to read one part at a time than will be turned off by it if they like the fandom/pairing/narrative/author to start with, and it can be nice to get reactions to each part instead of one blanket reaction at the end.
And in the end, if I have a NEED for a particular scenario/pairing/kink -- no, no, it's not want in that case, it's NEED! -- I'll read in whatever the hell format the author wants to use for posting, just bring it!

Date: 2008-06-11 09:04 pm (UTC)But that's a good point about multiple stories (like, for a ficathon) all going up, complete, and they're massive. It's totally overwhelming to me, too. What's great about Yuletide is the search engine. I don't feel so overwhelmed knowing I can find something at a later time.
But when it's something I'm totally engrossed in, I want it alllllll, zomg!! Hahaha, Om nom nom INDEED! Speaking of, help me with this waffle cone. *shares*
