Remember when Val Kilmer was funny and hot? Seems like 25 years ago.... And good lord, that makes me feel old. "What did you say to him?" "I told him I'd put him on the Montgomery Ward mailing list." Nope, that really was the one that made me feel old.

I have some nerd talk and questions for the nerdery.

1. Question: who has used Windows 7 with joy in their heart, and if so, do you recommend 32 or 64 bit? ATTN Mac users: I don't care. I already drank the iPhone Kool-Aid, I won't drink anymore. Also, I like writing my own code/hacking my own PC, thx.
2. Nerd Talk: one of the best freeware apps out there for your PC: CCleaner. My computer is running so much faster now, it's redonk.
3. Question: I'm looking to create a Wordpress blog to move stuff off here and have my own domain name, as recommended by Chuck and others. Which hosting site do you recommend for me? I have a lot of traffic here, so I'm hoping that will continue when I move off LJ, too, so that's a factor. (Side note: that post has some great writerly don'ts, but that's par for the course over there.)
4. Nerd Talk: I plan on creating an RSS feed to go in this space, so I'm not "going away." I'm just getting a bit more professional, but with the same amount of dick jokes. :)
5. Nerd Talk: I figured out how to make my own ringtones by circumventing the iTunes rules (pfft, I own songs, I should be able to make a ringtone out of it, iTunes! Again, mac Users: SUCK IT, I DON'T CARE. You're cultists. Ahahaha. I'm 01d 5c7001, yo.) I first dl'd a very intricate program called audacity that has a high learning curve. Then I got smart and dl'd a program called iRinger. Way more simplistic and the way to go. When you export after making your ringtone, it automatically sends it to your ringtone folder on your phone. EASY AND LOVELY. I may have gone crazy nuts.

I'm off to find a cocktail dress so I don't look like a rube with my good bag and cheap shoes (haha, reverse that, I'm that girl. I'd eff me. I'd eff me so hard.) when I'm in Las Vegas this weekend with [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 and [livejournal.com profile] lynnenne. Aside from that, I'm all over the jeans and button down because I'm quite boring. And by jeans and button down I of course mean spandex hot pants and sparkle tube tops with rainbow sequins. I'm classy. Also, I have to pay for the trip somehow, am I right ladies?

I'm not running windows 7, but I always hear 32bit's better, since more programs run using it.

I used dharkness.info when I was doing my small productivity blog (me an productivity, ha!) and it ran wordpress fine. Be wary though - the server is very sensitive about spam and may block your MySQL database when you get too much of it (like 50 MB of spam on my RP forum. I am an extremely bad webmaster).

CCleaner is godly. And Spybot-SD makes sure you don't get the wifi syphilis.

Oooh, that's a good point. I don't know if I'm running anything that wouldn't be compatible, but I'll clearly need to look into that before I make a switch. I'm just in a hurry to dump Vista, aka, MONSTER OS of SUCK.

Oh my god, I love Spybot so much it's not even funny. I've been happily running that for almost a year now. One of the best freeware apps out there (that, plus the new AVG + CCleaner = happiest computer ever.)

WAAAAAAH!!! Oh, that's such a pisser. (Maybe ask the place you bought it from for an upgrade? They might hook you up for next to nothing?)

It's an Acer Aspire I got from Walmart. I Hope they do, I mean Vista's not that bad, but it's not great either.

I'm a Mac User, so I have nothing to offer on the nerd score. However, I was reeled into commenting by the Real Genius quote.

"Would you prepared if gravity reversed itself? The only thing I can't figure out is how to keep the change in my pockets. I've got it. Nudity."

I kno rite?!

For years (literally: since 2007) I could never run wifi through this computer and one day I just install Spybot, turn on the real-time protection thing (TeaTimer or something?) and BOOM! wireless works like nothing ever happened.

I have so gold sneakers that would go great with your shorts and sparkly tube top. No, seriously. My mom sent them to me. I DON"T KNOW WHY.

Maybe because I had silver snakeskin hightops I wore in 1987? (I bought them in Hawaii when I used to travel for a living. They were seconds and I got them for five bucks and wore them with at...wait for it....purple jumpsuit. From Liz Clairborne, because I am rad. With shoulder pads out to there. Because, you know. Makes your waist look smaller. And? A mondo perm.)

P.S. Mac users don't need no Kool-aid. We have hard cider. ;) AND AWESOMENESS. (What?)

My new laptop came with Vista and a Windows 7 upgrade. I was ready to return the thing for a while, it inches along, and I got a couple freezes right out of the box. Since I upgraded to 7 that problem seems to have stopped, but I'm definitely going to try that CCleaner thing...I think bloatware is the culprit. I have the 64 bit and I haven't run in to any software conflicts.

Other awesome freeware? AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Avast. I'm currently on the hunt for a user-friendly easy contact management package so that I can print out my Christmas card labels and such, so feel free to make suggestions. I refuse to continue using macros and spreadsheets.

Wordpress is okay, if you already know coding and html and all that. I started a blog with wordpress and made the mistake of going with one of the templates and found that it's actually easier to go barebones and do all your own from scratch- much easier than dealing with someone else's scripts. Secondly, avoid GoDaddy as a host at all costs. They're a pain in the ass to work with. Just... just save yourself the migraine and don't go there. Bluehost.com is pretty easy to start up with as a domain. I think it's like... $100 or less for the entire year? They set you up with everything and wordpress is easily run on it.

As for the Kool-Aid- you can script and code your own Mac if you know how. My SO is an IT guy and he knows all the tricks. I like having a Mac precisely because I don't HAVE to code, but that's just me, lol. Oh, and there are several ways of bypassing the whole ringtone thing- and again, that's a question for my SO. (BTW- he hacked his iPhone so that the startup symbol is a pineapple instead of an apple... awesome.)

Sorry... I love my Mac too much to not defend it. I... I think it's ingrained in me now. (Bare in mind I've used PC and Mac in equal amounts growing up- it's not cult indoctrination, I've just grown to prefer the Mac!)

Remember when Val Kilmer was funny and hot? Yes I do. I can't believe "Real Genius" is nearly a quarter of a century old. "Sixteen Candles" is, too!

Yay, cocktail dress shopping! I hope you find something extra slinky for Vegas.

Gosh, we are so mfeo.

But you lose for having an iPhone! WHAAAAAAAAAAT????????????? I'm going to get a droid, I do believe. I WILL NOT GIVE IN TO THOSE MAC FUCKS, NO!

Do you mind if I ask how you use Audacity to make ringtones? Is it particularly complicated?

YES WE ARE.

How have we not shared the phone info?? Dude, I was so anti-ANY phone for years after I quit my job in the stock market. I seriously kept asking for a Jitterbug - the Grandma phone with big fist-smash buttons? I had a Blackberry and I haaaaaaaaated it. God I hated that phone. Then this summer the Mr. got me an iPhone and I sighed heavily, turned it on and BIRDS LANDED ON MY SHOULDER AND A SAW A RAINBOW. I seriously love my freaking phone, and I have NEVER said that about a hand held device. LOL.

I just bought this in bamboo over the weekend for it, and I cannot wait for it to arrive all simple and hip.

O HAI. I'm currently dl'ding S1 of SPN. I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.

I have gold roller skates! Wait, that + booze + Las Vegas strip could mean some serious problems, let me rethink this...

Snakeskin hightops, eh? AND a purple jumpsuit? Holy shit, I'd pay good money to take those things from you and wear them NOW. Of course you have to have the shoulder pads and perm, too, it's like... not doing that is like peanut butter without jelly!!

God, I hate Vista. It's such a resource hog. I have a quad-core processor, 8 GB of ram and my computer gets bogged down if multiple programs are running. WHAAAAA??? Vista sucks hard. You are going to LOVE CCleaner. I also run Adaware and spybot.

Man, I know NOTHING about contact management software because I'm old school and write out my addresses in my fancy Copperplate that I practiced ad nauseum as a kid. I'm a nerd. I bet someone will come along and suggest something, my flist is good for that stuff.

I do know coding and HTML, so that won't be a problem for me. Thanks for chiming in about hosts - I actually had GoDaddy on the top of my list, so I'll be cautious before I just jump in with anyone. I have seen some host sites that are about 49.50, so I'll see if I can't scare up some info from users to see if it's worth it.

*ignores the Mac stuff* I'm old school C++ not to mention A++ certified. Gates owns me, yo. ;)

Isn't it crazy to think of those movies being HALF a freaking CENTURY old?! I don't know how to handle that... Esp. on days like today when I tried to shop for a nice top for going out and have a Forever 21 to Cougar-esque leopard print sparkle top range of clothing to choose from. Oy. (Banana Republic it is, then! I'm so predictable.)

But I found a great dress that made me feel tall, yay!

Oh, you can ask, I just have no clue! I got it to work once on a fluke, then couldn't figure out how I did what I did. I was dazzled by all of the hoohahs and buttons. iRinger was WAY more simplistic. That could be a drawback, but it worked great for me, and did just what I needed.

My desktop is a fancy-schmancy Quad Core, and Vista hasn't given me problems there....but now I wonder what feats of greatness I'd get from 7 there! My new laptop is very pretty (LCD screen means FIVE GLORIOUS HOURS of battery life!) but the Vista sucked emphatically.

I am still writing names out by hand. But, I get all ADD about the fact that I DID THAT ALREADY LAST YEAR, so I'd like to type them in once and then be done with it.
