I have wasted my whole day on this. What is "this?" Well, I'll tell you.

4 8 15 16 23 42

That's what. Take away 42 (the bonus number, fans of Hitchhiker's Guide know that it's the "answer to life." So, take that number away and you have a series of nonprime number of 1s in binary expansion. Which means.... nothing.

Or, (I swear to god, I am not making this up) you can use the WOLFRAM SEQUENCE and obtain those numbers. But... all that means is David Fury (who wrote last night's LOST ep) is having fun. They aren't Fibonacci, they aren't Apocolyptic Numbers (there is such a thing: derivatives of 666, unless you break the sequence apart, and that's cheating), or Odius Numbers... I have one theory left: Leviathan Number. My brain hurts and my ass hurts, but here's the formula: (10666)! where ! = factorial. Anyone?

Also, if you plug in the numbers here in the following sequence: Latitude: 4 8 15, tab over to Longitude and enter: 16 23 42, you can see the satellite image is over a chain of islands near Australia. But it CAN'T be that simple? I need to stand up and walk around now... Brain... Hurting....

Just saw in [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen's journal -- she pointed us to [livejournal.com profile] catscradle's post where if you look down the page she makes several observations about the numbers that are very interesting, and not at all what's been going on in these comments. But probably more likely, given the fact that David Fury is (to my best knowledge) not a mathematician).

I read that, too, but the problem I have with that is that you have to disregard half of the numbers in the sequence, and then what the hell is the point of the numbers? You know? (Meaning, you drop 4, 16, and 42. I can understand dropping 42 from the chain, since it was a bonus number, but the others?) So, while it was fun in college to get drunk and think about the significance of 23, I can't see how it plays any significance in this.

Of course, I'm tking this waaaaay too seriously, according to above.

If you take out 42 (and give it the Hitchhicker's Guide's meaning = meaning of it all) the other numbers are an extrapolation of a binary string of 1s. Which could mean a computer intelligence, or higher-order type thing.

Am I the only one who read the Vinge books: Summer Queen and Snow Queen? Where there was a super computer that affected an entire universe and it's creation? (It's where - I suspect - Lucas got the whole "mitichondrian" element of Star Wars.)

I didn't think she disregarded the other numbers -- I thought they were all added up to get 48 (the number of survivors)? Maybe I read it wrong.

I did read Vinge's Summer Queen and Snow Queen, but it was so long ago I frankly don't remember much about them. My long-term memory is worth nothing... That's why I collect books, because to me, when I reread them it's like having a brand-new book!
